NEW YORK — MSNBC said Friday that "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough will be suspended for donating to four Republican candidates in local Florida races, two weeks after Keith Olbermann was suspended for making political contributions to Democrats.

Scarborough said he agreed with the two-day suspension, which is the same duration as Olbermann's.

The donations, first reported by the website Politico, came between 2004 and 2008. Scarborough, a former Republican congressman from Florida, made eight donations of $500 apiece to campaigns for Florida offices being run by his brother, George, former congressional staffer David Stafford and family friends Don Gaetz and his son, Matt Gaetz. All are Republicans.

"Because the contributions involved local, non-competitive races — and were given for personal rather than political reasons — I mistakenly believed I did not need approval from MSNBC," Scarborough said. "I also apologize for that oversight."

NBC News bans political donations from its staff members unless special permission is granted by the network president.

Scarborough will be back on the air the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, said MSNBC President Phil Griffin.

"As Joe recognizes, it is critical that we enforce our standards and policies," Griffin said.

Scarborough apologized three times in a nine-paragraph statement. That's in contrast to Olbermann, who apologized to his fans — but not to MSNBC — for donating to three Democratic candidates during the midterm elections.

Olbermann called for a re-examination and public debate about the no-donation rule, which he suggested may not make sense during an era of opinionated cable news hosts. NBC News has given no indication that the rule is being reconsidered.

Scarborough promised that political donations "will not happen again."

"I am proud to work for the NBC News family," he said. "There is nothing more important than maintaining the integrity of its highly respected brand."

Scarborough co-hosts a three-hour political discussion program with Mika Brzezinski that airs at 6 a.m each weekday.

Each time they do this, it results in a ratings spike. Who will get suspended next? I'd say Dylan Ratigan, but no one watches that show. Joe is O.K. however, but the show is better without him. He talks way to much.

I've come to that conclusion too. I have always been a big fan of the show, but Scarborough goes back and for the between pragmatist and idealist so fast it makes you head spin. Plus he has a tendency to filibuster the discussion, never letting anyone else get a word in when he's ranting and raving about the white house.

In a statement, Scarborough apologized to the network. But he added that because the contributions were for local Florida races, he had not understood the NBC News policy applied.

Why don't Republicans ever take responsibility for when they make mistakes?

Mika can play the role of "mom" too much; yeah, Joe loves the sound of his own voice, but the show is great- best of the 24/7 yack fests.

Is this still on the air? Tim Russertr's drop-in appearance each morning used to be ab incentive to watch, but ... between Joe's King Baby and Mika's codependency egging him on, it's unbearable for me.

Does Joe still ramble on aggressively -- like someone awakened from an Ambien-induced sleep and pumped up on caffeine?

Kudos to MSNBC for drawing a line in the sand to distinguish between journalism and propaganda. Each little step (it's a small one) helps. If we just wave our hands and say "don't make a fuss ... I've got more important things to worry about" -- then our children grow up to have social disorders, and we turn on propaganda TV for advice, and wonder what went wrong with the world.

I...don't get it. First MSNBC said that Scarborough covered himself, and complied with policy, by informing his superiors that he was going to make the donations, and that was the reason Olbermann got suspended while Scarborough didn't. Are these different donations, or did MSNBC management lie?

It looks like their different donations. It says in the article they were $500 dollar donations to each of 4 local candidates in Florida.

I am tempted to say HA take that righties ...because of all the backslapping that went on over Olbermann..but I won´t do that...why? because it is wrong for them to suspend someone for their political donations...what you do with your money as long as it is legal is no one´s business...and if you donate to a political candidate as a private citizen that is your business...good grief MSNBC what is wrong with you guys?

MSNBC is taking the right path here. They have a written policy prohibiting this activity. The policy was violated. Suspension ensues.

I am curious, though, how it would have been viewed among the public if Joe's contributions had been made public before Keith's.

I laud NBC for trying to operate as an "INDEPENDENT" news organization! Huge contrast with Fox (NOT NEWS) & Friends. At best, they are the propaganda network.

The Main Stream Media, and I mean all of them, need to have a segment daily highlighting the Bias spewed by faux news. Every Right Wing lunatic in this country shows up on Faux News. Why? Infact, the lunatics refuse to appear on any other
"NEWS" programs, afraid of the questions I guess! We all know most crooks and shyters prefer to operate in stealth. And since Faux News loves dredging the bottom for viewers, the rest of the Media should be there exposing "them" for the sluge they pollute our enviornment with!

It would be interesting to know if, when Scarborough became aware of Oblermann suspension, Scarborough pro-actively reported himself or waited to see if he'd get called on it. Surely after the Olbermann suspension, Scarborough should have been aware enough to question his previous misunderstanding of policy.

They actually have a policy which says news anchors can't contribute privately to politicians? I'd really like to see that in writing in their employee agreements.

I don't understand why a person, any person, isn't allowed to contribute to the campaign of whom they choose. As long as the person isn't campaigning on the air for this person, or in some public venue, using their on-air persona to promote the candidate, it seems some rights are being denied.

The reason why these policies exist are because there used to be something called journalistic ethics. Journalists were expected to interview members of both political parties equally, both in frequency and in tenacity. If a journalist makes donations, it opens up the news organization to attacks on its credibility and whether or not it is favoring one political party over another. More specifically, if a journalist makes a donation, there's the possibility that an interview or any involvement between the journalist, their network, and the politician could be an illegal campaign contribution.

I know it's shocking, this day and age, to see media outlets such as NPR and MSNBC attempting to maintain at least a modicum of journalistic ethics, but, well... there you have it. They are attempting to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

No Fufu, because their policies actually distinguish between the two..I don´t have time to go back and find the old thread on Olbermann, but I took the time to look up MSNBC policies and they actually conflict with NBC policies...MSNBC does not require their commentators to hold to the same standards that journalists do..a journalist is held to non bias while a commentator is clearly biased..examples of commentators of course are Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Keith Olbermann, etc..

This is ridiculous. MSNBC doesn't really care if Scarborough donates to anyone. They only wish to make it look like they are neutral in their enforcement of the rules after the Olbermann suspension. No one can possibly believe they suddenly decided that Scarborough's actions are worthy of suspension.

They didnt fire Joe they just suspended him. While I do not take all of the left leaning rhetoric as gospel, I do find a lot more value and common sense at MSNBC then at Fox

I remind you all that these talkingheads are just that, and as soon as we accept their diatribe as gospel, without questioning its veracity we lose our objectivity and become the very sheep we scorn.

Why would you do it for two weeks? Joe is only suspended for two days. Not that I ever watch his show anyway. Too damned early in the morning for me!

I guess i am that rarity that actually finds it possible to distance themselves from partisanship and focus on fact and on what I believe.

That and the fact that before Bush 41 I was a hardline Republican thanks to Carter leaving I and my fellow soldiers waiting on the tarmac at Travis while our dead and wounded brothers in arms were being paraded through the streets of Tehran for all the world to see.

I hear you on the time slot RD, though now a days I'm more likely to catch Joe after a nite of prostate trouble than I am from an evening of debauchery.

Personally, I contributed to signing the petetion to reinstate Keith Olbermann, but I wouldn't ever for Joe Scarborough!!!! He's not my cup of tea! He's of course partial to Republicans' and even if he makes things up about them to make them look good to everyone else, he does!

That's not news or journalism, but merely his own opinion! We're all capable of deciding what works for us and do not need his "personal input" on everything!!

Maybe he should go work for Fox, it'd be a better choice for him!!!

Well, it is interesting that MSNBC, which does have more liberal commentary than conservative, does give a conservative his own show, rather than have token liberals as guests or secondary hosts like another well-known network.

doreen, he's not my cup of tea either, but I'll sign the petition BECAUSE I signed the one for Keith. The reasons I thought MSNBC was out of line with Keith apply equally to Joe. While I don't agree with Joe's political views (or Pat Buchanan's), I find that they are honest when it comes to analyzing political strategies no matter who the candidate is.

I'm guessing this statement is why Joe is there:

"There is nothing more important than maintaining the integrity of its highly respected brand."

What lala land is that guy from? He's talking about NBC!

Hey Griffin, you're an idiot.  I bet you'd show up to a gunfight with a slingshot.  Why is it the rules are different for your boys?  Rules for the sake of rules.  Let 'em all donate $ millions and let them disclose it.  I couldn't care less.  Or would you rather have the "big money" in this country run it through the likes of Rove, the U S Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Army?  Get a life and get a grip on what's happening here and stick with what's important.  Too bad Joe and Keith didn't tell you to place it where the sun don't shine, then go to one of your competitors...and bury your network, which they would.

hate to interupt your rant but you seem a litlle pissed. first we dont pass rules that are stupid, also joe is one of our competitors and our ratings prove not only has MSNBC not buried our network , his and all the others combined don't come close.

not only is it msnbc direction that is failing, it's the exacution of it. and yes, you do care, so who's fooling who.

Scarborough, if given the opportunity, would share all your deepest secrets with his inquisitor if he felt the least bit threatened.

Should we be worried about a neo-inquisition? FOX and fringe Republicans have some plans?

I'm just curious why Joe can donate to eight campaigns (of which we know) and only get a two-day suspension when Keith Olberman who has spent so much of his own money for free medical clinics contributed to only three campaigns, and in my humble opinion, is more intelligent. Don't tell me Joe didn't understand the difference in a Florida contributation. I know it when I hear it.

Contract or not, MSNBC's rule is unconstitutional.

It's really not. The Constitution says that Government shall make no law barring peoples freedom of speech. Business is free to do as it wishes, and Scarborough can got to Fox News anytime he wants to.

At MSNBC, if you give campaign donations to Democratic candidates, you get suspended. If you donate to Republicans, you too get suspended.

Meanwhile, at FOX News, if you are found to have donated to a Democratic cause, you'll probably get fired. If they discover that you donated to Republicans, .... they'll make you Employee of the Month.
