NEW YORK — Mark Madoff's widow broke her silence on Wednesday, saying she was "devastated" by his recent suicide and wanted privacy.

Madoff, the son of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff, left behind four children — an 18- and 16-year-old from a previous marriage and a 4- and 2-year-old with wife Stephanie Madoff.

"Regardless of what you feel about my father-in-law and his monstrous crimes, Mark's children are innocent victims and this is tragic for them," Stephanie Madoff said in a statement, her first remarks since the death on Saturday.

"I am devastated and now raising two small children alone," she said. "I ask that you please show decency and understanding toward all of Mark's children and allow us to mourn in private."

Stephanie Madoff said her husband's body had been cremated and that there would be a private gathering honoring him later this week at an undisclosed location.

"I deeply appreciate the expressions of heartfelt sympathy and support I have received over the past several days from so many people who knew and loved Mark," she said. "I will miss him and love him forever."

Madoff, 46, hanged himself with a black dog leash in his Manhattan apartment on the second anniversary of his father's arrest on charges he cheated thousands of investors out of tens of billions of dollars.

The suicide came while the Madoff family faced mounting pressure from a court-appointed trustee trying to recover money for victims of the massive Ponzi scheme by filing dozens of lawsuits to meet a deadline.

The trustee and federal investigators have been trying to determine if Mark Madoff — along with his brother, Andrew Madoff, and his uncle Peter Madoff — participated in or knew about the fraud. The brother and sons, who held management positions at the family investment firm, have denied wrongdoing.

Bernard Madoff's attorney has said he will mourn privately at the North Carolina prison where he's serving a 150-year sentence.

She said she doubted any of the victims were taking pleasure in the Madoff family's sorrow.

I'm not even one of their victims and I'm taking pleasure in their suffering... I can only imagine that their victims are enjoying them go down even more.

I take no pleasure in the man's death. Then again I didn't get ripped off. If I did, I would likely not feel bad and might even laugh a little. What do I care. Madoff ripped off the people that were ripping off the common man. That is why he is in jail. The guy that pushed the crap morgages that was fleeced is not seeing a cell, now he is called a 'victim'. I respect the Madoffs. Papi took the jail cell before he would rat. The son killed himself to preserve his son's inheritance. That seems more noble then the tales of most of Madoff's victims.

Some may feel bad because his kid was sleeping in the next room but the dad likely offed himself for the kid. I doubt he killed himself because he suddenly had an attack of remorse. He killed himself so a large chunk of these ill gotten gains will go to an innocent family member. If the kid gets even a quarter of Papi's worthy he well said for. With Obama's deal on estate taxes the kid will even get a bit more.

Killing the two year old because his pop and grandpa ripped off a bunch of greedy people seems a bit much.

Due to media censorship the few bloodless and painless ways to commit suicide are not available to the general public. But they are known to the rich and famous who never have to suffer when they make their final exit. Mark Madoff was known to fear pain and never would have chosen to die in agony. Unfortunately his murders gave him no choice when they wrapped the dog leash around his neck and strung him up to die a horrible death.

I am sure that Mark told his father just how proud he was of him.

And I am sure that Bernard Madoff is truly proud of how his son demonstrated that pride in his father.

"...he carried the toxic burden..." might be a polite way of saying that Mark Madoff was consistently bullied and tormented by members of his immediate community into suicide.

Otherwise there would be no reason for him to feel such deep self-loathing to take his life.

The entire community should be under investigation, especially members of law enforcement and political figures - not only those closest to the immediate circumstances surrounding this young man's life.

People can be especially cruel and destructive in malice against those perceived by some to be "the enemy." On occasion, entire communities can be involved in this criminal networking to affect an individual through psychological tensions and hate that can result in suicide.

I would guess this was actually manslaughter by intentional malice acted out against Mark Madoff by his community to cause this.

7.1 - your words are unlawful in the US - hate speech is not protected.

Our justice system is to protect the innocent from being wrongly charged and prosecuted - all are innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and provided due process. Mark Madoff was not guilty of his father's crimes his father was convicted of.

Your statement evidences what I claim below.

    7.3 - you do?

Yes, in fact - I do know what I'm talking about - but I see many posting here are making up stories as they go along.

That's not what we do in the justice system and certainly not spreading hate because of the actions of a father - to his son. I do not like trouble makers.

    Recite your sentence to yourself.

Yes I do. Do you have proof to back up your assertion that the entire community conspired to kill this man? It's just too far fetched.

6.5 - I never said the community did - but it should be investigated. Not too far fetched and you know it. Sometimes communities network to destroy someone.

It's time people quit denying it. Everyone loves to call the person crazy who decries collusion - but guess what - it happens and probably did in this situation. Sometimes it is incited by dirty cops.

Nothing worse than a dirty cop.

6.7 - I just read the latest report and it infers that false accusations and innuendos may have contributed to how he was treated, as I suspected. What a shame. I hate to hear of such things when innocent people are harmed by judgmental people.

inferred? Let me know when it's proven.
The boy had a lot to defend but you need to look no further then his father for the person that provided the most hurt. It's more than reasonable to suspect the sons involvement and inquire why they didn't know if they didn't. I'llgotten gains are to be returned... He was left with a @!$%#ty hand to play in the game of life... But you really have to wonder how he had no clue ... Or maybe he just felt guilty and didn't want to deal with it. There are stil a lot of unanswered questions and he's not talking just like his pop.

Let me add - I think it's time in 2010 for our nation to admit to this type of bullying. When our Executive Branch persists in paranoia to cause a department store to engage its employees and patrons to rat on each other knowing it will incite false reporting -

we live in a highly hate-filled society where many can no longer tolerate normal social interactions but are supplanting reasonable communication and acceptance or tolerance with extreme measures.

This suicide should never have happened and I'm speaking out against those who may have caused it. It is quite possibly a case of manslaughter - an intent to harm this man by malicious conduct and hate.

Dear Bernie, I hope this makes you feel as miserable as others you have harmed. Somehow I doubt that your conscience really ever kicks in so you should know that your actions have ruined many people including your own son. I hope you live a long and miserable imprisoned life. It will be worth it to keep you alive to see the full effect on the rest of your family

When Madoff confessed to his sons, he asked them to wait a week before taking any action. He didn't. He contacted the FBI immediately. He also gave his family permission to change their last name to Morgan so that his children would not bear the stigma associated with the name Madoff. Yet, some choose to vilify him. This man carried the shame of his father until he could no longer. RIP Mark.

and he had all those millions from his father's ill-gotten gains to enjoy.

I prefer him gone from this earth - the crook.

and he should have taken his father with him!

It is hell for the Madoff family as they are constantly being bombarded by the media, but the millions of vicious comments by Jew haters adds fire to that hell. John Gotti and his family got more respect, luckily they were not Jewish.

I think the reason the Madoffs are being bombarded is because they stole a ton of money and ruined lots of lives. Not sure how the Jewish thing came up.

                      The Madoffs are Jewish.

                      and

                      The Madoffs are crooks.

                      and

                      Madoff senior is in jail.

                      and

Madoff junior committed suicide after not giving any of the millions stolen back to the victims.

                      and

No member of his Jewish family has claimed the younger Madoff's body.

                      and

Kenneth Lay and Hitler and Idi Amin were not jewish although some committed suicide.
