DETROIT — For the first time in its history, General Motors' Buick luxury brand will get an upscale compact car.

The company says it will unveil the Buick Verano on Monday at the Detroit auto show, GM's only new model to debut at the event.

The Verano is a small car based on the Chevrolet Cruze that GM says is designed to compete against the Audi A3 and Volvo S40 in the entry-level luxury market.

GM engineers say they went to great lengths to make the car different from the Cruze, enhancing its handling and ride with a suspension borrowed from Europe's Opel Astra, changing the body to give it a more sculpted, aerodynamic look and making the car quieter with better insulation and window glass. GM also says the car has a far more luxurious interior than the Cruze.

In past years, GM was guilty of selling the same car across many of its brands with only minor cosmetic differences between them. But Jim Federico, the car's chief engineer, said the Verano will be far different from the Cruze to compete with sophisticated European and Japanese luxury brands.

"We learned from our mistakes," he said.

The Verano, to be built in Michigan, will arrive in showrooms sometime in the fourth quarter. Pricing was not announced, but the car is expected to cost somewhere between the luxury version of the Cruze, which starts around $22,000, and the midsize Buick Regal, which starts around $26,000.

The car also is expected to attract younger buyers, helping Buick as it tries to shed its image of offering cars for senior citizens. Last year the average age of a Buick buyer was 65.

Buick sales rose 52 percent last year with a series of revamped models such as the Regal and LaCrosse larger luxury sedan.

The '77 Skyhawk S I used to own was pretty upscale at the time it came out. For some reason the J-body counterpart to the Trans Am Special Edition (as seen in "Smokey and the Bandit") was based on a Buick, not the new (at the time) Sunbird (which was offered in a Formula edition) !! I wish them the best of luck, but I hope GM hedges its' bets by offering the excellent 2.4 liter DI in a Cruze (RS?) version!!

    Isn't "luxury compact" an oxymoron?

Does anybody remember the Cimarron or the Catera? GM's compact Cadillac?

      Does anybody remember Georges Santayana?

        Isn't "luxury compact" an oxymoron?

Probably, Yes! But ..... What would you think sounds better if you were to buy one and told friends about it? "Hey Joe, I went out and bought me 2011/12 GM Verano! It's a luxury compact!" or... "Hey Joe, I went out and bought me 2011/12 GM Verano! It's a compact!" I'm thinking that as rampant as megalomania is in American society, GM marketing of this car by its sales group as a "luxury compact" will go over BIG, and all will be forgotten about any hints to the oxymoron part.

I never dealt with the Cimarron however, I was forced to sell my fair share of Cateras. The problem with using either as examples (I am basing the Cimarron information off of about 10 minutes of research on Google) is that both vehicles were half-assed attempts at bringing a shade of luxury to a small vehicle with a high profit margin. Both vehicles were literally rebranded GMs with slightly more plush interiors.

On the flipside, the Verano is the complete package. It's packed with noise diffusing materials, a low noise and smooth ride suspension, upgraded base interior, a markedly unique body design, premium paint, and surprisingly, one hell of an A/V package.

The only thing I think was a mistake was to equip it with a 4-banger. GM has, through it's holdings, some very compact V6 designs that would have completed the picture for this car. I can only imagine that they're going to stick with a 4 cylinder design if this car is heavily embraced by middle income small families or professionals in big cities where owning a car is a luxury but due to size, a downfall.

Personally though, I'm still pissed that GM dropped Pontiac and moved forward with two premium brands. I like to have cars with an exclusively sporty look and feel, and it looks like I'm going to have to import and Opel so I can get what would have been the new G6 coupe.

Sad but very true statement. I would have liked to have seen 6 instead of 4 cylinders. Of course, I'm an older, middle class American who could accept that (4 instead of 6), but when I need to step on the pedal, I want a car that has great pick up and the ability to get up and go. That will be important to me concerning this model. Nice looking car,and fairly reasonable on the estimated base sticker price - $22k to $26k.

        Starseeker

GM has vacated the mid market with the elimination of Oldsmobile, Saturn, and Pontiac. Buick's days are numbered and will suffer the same fate as GM continues to fumble around aimlessly. Buick and Cadillac are niche lines and Chevrolet makes the ugliest vehicles on the planet. It's just a matter of time before GM ceases to exist.

Chevrolet makes the ugliest vehicles on the planet. Is that why the Camaro beat the Mustang in 2010 sales??

Is that why the Camaro beat the Mustang in 2010 sales??

Not that I support the statement from starseeker completely, but I think that the bump in Camaro sales has more to do with the fact that GM fans have been longing for a new Camaro for some time. Those kind of market grabs are short-lived and represent merely that people wanted to get one while they're hot.

The truly blistering fact is that the Mustang has been a solid sales performer for more than 15 years straight, all with little revolutionary change to the platform.

Given that the Mustang has yet to receive the very popular 70's retro treatment that has adorned all the other muscle cars, I think that Ford has kept an important and powerful card up their sleeves. Not only have they slated a new Mustang Boss 302 for production, but they have also introduced the new V8 ti-vct engine, and they've hinted at another, more streamlined body style in the 2013 line.

Point blank, the Mustang is not at all tarnished by diminished sales for one season.
