Will autism fraud report be a vaccine booster?

A 1998 paper by Wakefield, which was the first study to link a childhood vaccine to autism, was based on doctored information about the children involved, according to a new report on the widely discredited research. The conclusions of the 1998 paper have been renounced by 10 of its 13 authors and was later retracted by the medical journal Lancet, where it was published. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogas, File)

ATLANTA — This week more shame was heaped upon the discredited British researcher whose work gave rise to the childhood-vaccines-cause-autism movement, as a prominent medical journal published a report that the man had faked his data. But will it make a difference?

Some believe the latest news will finally destroy the reputation of researcher Andrew Wakefield and put an end to the claim of scientific underpinnings for the anti-vaccine movement. "We hope that declaring the paper a fraud will close that door for good," wrote the journal BMJ this week, in an editorial accompanying the report.

Yet at least some advocacy groups continue to take Wakefield's side. And though the latest report may ease the doubts of some parents, experts said they'd be surprised if the latest news changes views overall.

"This scared people and it's hard to unscare them," said Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease expert at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"Until medicine can step up and say, 'We understand the cause of autism,' they may never be assured," said Offit, who has written books criticizing the anti-vaccine movement.

Wakefield made international waves following the publication in 1998 in the Lancet, a prestigious medical journal, that he and his colleagues had linked measles-mumps-rubella vaccine with autism in most of a dozen children they had studied.

It was a small series of observations, wrapped in a hypothesis — not even a full medical study. But it exploded in the media, prompting a wave of parental concerns in England as well as the United States.

Immunization rates in Britain dropped from 92 percent to 73 percent, and were as low as 50 percent in some parts of London. The effect was not nearly as dramatic in the United States, but researchers have estimated that as many as 125,000 U.S. children born in the late 1990s did not get the MMR vaccine because of the Wakefield splash.

It's not clear how many U.S. parents knew details of the Wakefield paper, or how many even knew his name, vaccine experts say. But the research coincided with growing apprehension about autism in this country, and seemed to finally assign a likely reason for it. The idea that vaccines could cause autism took hold.

"Clearly, the results of this (Wakefield) study have had repercussions," said Dr. Michael Smith, a University of Louisville infectious diseases expert who has studied the autism controversy's effect on immunization rates.

Gradually, Wakefield's hypothesis was checked by other researchers who failed to confirm a link between vaccines and autism. It was dissected by experts, and 10 of the article's 13 authors renounced the work.

The first claims that Wakefield had doctored data came in a 2009 story in the Sunday Times of London by British journalist Brian Deer. That report said Wakefield made it seem some of the children did not experience symptoms until after they'd received their shots. Those findings were repeated in this week's report in BMJ.

Then, last year, the Lancet retracted the Wakefield paper — 12 years after it was published. Wakefield was also stripped of his right to practice medicine in Britain; he has no medical license in the U.S.

This week, Wakefield continued to defend himself, calling the journalist "a hit man" during an interview with CNN. And some parents of autistic children and other advocates argue that the criticisms of Wakefield are actually attempts to close off research into the safety of vaccines.

"A character assassination initiative against those who look for answers only serves to stunt medical progress for our children and perpetuate unnecessary public health risks," said Wendy Fournier, president of the National Autism Association, in a prepared statement.

But health officials counter that the science is settled and prolonging the debate is dangerous. Although U.S. vaccination rates have held steady through the last decade, health officials say vaccine fears led to outbreaks of measles and the virus Hib in 2008 in unvaccinated children in states like California and Minnesota. The Hib outbreak included at least one reported death.

In a country where the name Andrew Wakefield doesn't register with most people, it's not clear that this week's report will make much difference. But perhaps it might have impact if it sways celebrities who have lent their voice to the anti-vaccine movement, like Jenny McCarthy, who has voiced her views repeatedly on television shows like "Oprah."

"It will be interesting to see what Jenny McCarthy and others say" about the latest news, said Smith, the Louisville researcher.

A spokesman for McCarthy on Thursday said she was not available for comment.

MISSION INVISIBLE

This is absolutely not true. Maybe vaccines are only half of the equation...but they are a crucial half...the other half is EMF's in the environment...Maybe they haven't added it all up, but I promise hundreds of thousands of parents have, but they don't know the exact mechanism...here is the mechanism as I see it.

Since our body is a "bioelectromagnetic field," capable of conducting electricity, when it is exposed to environmental stimuli that carry a charge (powerlines, cellphones, computers), it excites the body's Reactive Oxygen Species (all types depending on the tissue). ROS (Free radicals, as most people know them) are a art of our body's natural biological processes, and they need electrons to reduce and become stable. If they can’t bond and get the electrons they need from a specific antioxidant or other sources of electrons(ie. SOD or Glutathione), then the cellular metabolism will increase due to the excited state .
I predict that ROS damage from Superoxide and Hydroxyl Radical [1], after exposure to environmental toxins or radiation is drastically increased after exposure to Electromagnetic Fields OR Strong Magnetic Fields (Sun/Earth). The imbalance in electrons of ROS creates a charge in our body (basically we become our own Electromagnetic field....), and when exposed to EMF’s (MANY ELECTRONS), the ROS stimulation leads to permanent and irreversible damage.

Think about your physics class when you were younger. You learn that magnets will always try to balance the positive and negative. If one magnet is larger than the other, the larger one will be more powerful, and either push or pull the smaller magnet depending on if the positive or negative side is facing it. When you have an electromagnetic field, there is electricity (constant flow of electrons) and a magnetic field. If our body's become an electromagnetic field, the ions in our body will always try to balance themselves with the other EMF's in the environment.
If antioxidants are not present (to give the ROS an extra electron), ROS can not reduce because of the electromagnetic pull from external stimuli. The dipoles will align, just as has been shown in animal studies. This ultimately leads to oxidative stress, DNA mutation, and eventually cell death. This process will be much more damaging to someone with a predisposition to a genetic/inherited connective tissue disorder.

If children get vaccines and don't get the proper antioxidants to rid their body of the toxins...if they are exposed to EMF's in the environment...it WILL cause damage. Their body is imbalanced and then the EMF's cause the final blow of damage because of the imbalance in electrons...its all about checks and balances. Protons, neutrons and electrons...the base of all life.

Oxidaitive stress takes place when free radicals are heightened too long... take a look at this autism and Oxidaitive stress article.

Ok then. Now EMF's from cell phones and computers will increase ROS production. I'd like to see that information from a peer reviewed publication.

Reactive oxygen species levels and DNA fragmentation on astrocytes in primary culture after acute exposure to low intensity microwave electromagnetic field.

Sorry about the font size, I copied and pasted from my blog, it won't let me change it here.

While I do think this is part of the problem, the other part is from the other toxins we are exposed to and the ROS created from them. Depending on the toxin would depend on the disease. I have about 30 symptoms from various diseases. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome...a rare genetic disorder. I was exposed to some chemicals and radiation over the last few months and I went from playing sports to disabled...I dislocate the majority of my joints now, I have a tumor, I have symptoms similar to autism and many other problems...I am so sensitive to cell phones that I develop a mild tremor when mine rings. I have taken the time to send out surveys to others in the community asking them about their illnesses and EMF's...have some interesting results.

Cooperative biological effects between ionizing radiation and other physical and chemical agents -- this one is just a response to an article, but it gives some great detail, I'm not sure if you have access to journals or not, I've gone through the research institute I work for.

We already knew it was a fraud. Will this really make a difference? I really don't think so.

You can't be autistic without being born, therefore it must be true! You guys are on to something! lol

That's not something to believe or disbelieve. It's one of the risks of some vaccinations and populations (by the way, you are aware that these are seizures caused by fevers, right? As in, having one of the diseases that you are getting vaccinated for may also give you seizures.).

The link between autism and vaccines is what is being discussed here. And autism has not been linked to vaccinations except in one report by a man who we know falsified his data and received money for doing so. The journal that published the report also retracted it.

This circus is taking time and money away from real autism research.

About one in 25 children will have a febrile seizure...very very common.

That is 1 in 25 children in the general population absent vacinnations...usually caused by high fever......very common, almost routine. I know many families who have children who have had such seizures.

Everyone doesn't get the disease injected into their arm and have the government persuading them their children will most certainly die if they don't.

Not what you think that I mean.

If the vaccine politicians have their way, everyone will be vaccinated. Meaning everyone will be forced on the risk of having vaccine induced febrile seizure.

Not everyone gets x disease. But if you want to compare apples to apples then I used the analogy forcing disease by injecting it. Not that it actually happens.

There are risk factors for who will get disease and/or the severity of it. People should have that choice and access to information without all of the disease fear mongering attached to it that the CDC/AAP so loves to do.

It is surprinsing that there are people actually believing this a$$ hole, MILLIONS of people have died of measles, mumps or rubella complications. Lancet, has a lot of responsability in this case, because the editors didn't review thoroughly the data presented for publication.

The real damage of this fraud is that it is distracting attention from trying to solve this epidemic.

There is a frightening rise in the incidence of autism and it is very sad for those of us who see young children on a regular basis.

We need to find the real source of this epidemic. Lets hope this news is accepted by the many parents who are desperate for an answer and we can support efforts based on science, not fraud.

                                    I agree.

There is such a problem today with people blindly following the blind. Parents want to rely on doctors to solve the answers. Find the reason. Find a cure.

We need to listen to other families who have tried things or tested theories that have really seen some changes. I work in research and taking what they do in the lab an applying it in the field is VERY hard.

I think it is so detrimental to so many people when they give press releases like this saying it was FRAUD...its not fraud, there is a correlation, yeah it might not equal causation (but thats because they just have not found the biological mechanism yet...personally I think it is the vaccines and a synergistic effect of the EMF's on the charged particles in their brain created from the vaccines...will cause damage if we don't eat antioxidants...) Check this out.

If we don't know how autism is caused, how do we know what doesn't cause it? Can you really rule out vaccination injury for a population of autistic children. No you can't.

Mission invisible, antioxidants may amplify oxidation under certain circumstances. As if you mix vitamin C with iron. Oxidation of lipids promotes inflammation as well as anti-imflammatory effects. Also, there are enzymatic and non enzymatic lines of antioxidant defense.

Have you examined long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and their role in oxidative stress? If so, I have some valuble research I would like to share with you.

A little about myself...I was supposed to start Physical Therapy school this past August...I am disabled now after some toxic exposure and one too many CT scans... Here is my story, I am now working/volunteering at Wake Forest Regenerative Medicine Institute to grow some of my tissue and run experiments on it after I put together a hypothesis about why my disorder progressed so quickly. I have no research background...just an desire to find out why last year I was playing in a state tennis tournament...and I now can't even run anymore...

Thanks! Unfortunately there is no "cure"...its genetic. They don't know what gene even causes it, or what happens to start the onset of it. There is not much research on Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and I have become very frustrated with the lack of funding for research. I have taken matters into my own hands and decided to make a change.

While I am a firm believer in Autism and Cancer research, I think there needs to be more help and funding for "the little guys" out there like me. Did you know there are over 500 listed rare disorders? (Madison's Foundation.org). My little sister had leukemia, so obviously I want cancer research to take place...but there are so many illnesses out there where people are effected every day for their entire life and their voices never get heard.

That's why I'm on a mission to make a change. I refuse to accept my "fate". I know to the day of when I started progressing and what toxins have seemed to make me worse. I do have a lot of autistic characteristics (developed after a flu vaccine) and I won't be quiet about it any longer.

                                            Thanks for your support!
