NEW YORK — Keith Olbermann, MSNBC's most successful and controversial personality for his outspoken liberal prime-time program, gave an abrupt goodbye to viewers and said Friday was his last show.

It was not immediately known if he quit or was fired. Olbermann did not address the question, and MSNBC said only that they and Olbermann had ended their contract. He signed a four-year contract two years ago.

"MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors," the network said in a statement.

A spokesman said Phil Griffin, MSNBC's president, would not comment on Olbermann's exit. Spokesman Jeremy Gaines would say only that the acquisition of NBC Universal by Comcast, which received regulatory approval this week, had nothing to do with the decision.

Olbermann was suspended without pay from the network for two days in November for donating to three Democratic candidates, which violated NBC News' policy on political donations. Olbermann complained that he was being punished for mistakenly violating an inconsistently applied rule that he had known nothing about.

The host apologized to fans — but not to the network.

MSNBC essentially molded the network in Olbermann's image. His program is MSNBC's top-rated, gaining in viewers after his evolution from a humorous look at the day's headline into a combatively political show in the latter days of the Bush administration. MSNBC decided that point-of-view programming was the way to go, and hired Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell — both occasional subs for Olbermann — to fill out its prime-time lineup.

His exit was so sudden that MSNBC didn't have time to change its ads; a "Lean Forward" promotion for the network featuring Olbermann aired within a half-hour of his final goodbye.

Olbermann, before leaving the show with a final signature toss of his script toward the camera, thanked his audience for sticking with him. As was often his habit on Friday nights, he read a James Thurber short story, this one titled "Scottie Who Knew Too Much" and published in 1940.

The story's final line: "It is better to ask some of the questions than to know all of the answers."

He thanked a series of people, including the late Tim Russert, but pointedly not Griffin or NBC News President Steve Capus.

"There were many occasions, particularly in the last 2 1/2 years, where all that surrounded the show — but never the show itself — was just too much for me," said Olbermann, whose father died recently. "But your support and loyalty and, if I may use the word, insistence, ultimately require that I keep going. My gratitude to you is boundless."

He said he was grateful to the network that he was given time to sign off, noting that when he left ESPN in the 1990s, he was given 30 seconds — cut in half at the last minute to get in tennis results.

But Olbermann was known for a mercurial personality behind the scenes and he was almost fired last year for the political donations. He quit a prime-time show on MSNBC in the late 1990s, complaining that management was making him report too much on President Bill Clinton's impeachment scandal.

He was particularly critical of Fox News Channel and his direct competitor, Bill O'Reilly, frequently naming him his "Worst Person in the World" in a segment popular with his fans. Bosses at NBC had discussed trying to keep the tone of the vitriol down.

Olbermann came in to work after the shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, airing a special comment in which he promised to tone down inflammatory rhetoric and challenged others to do the same.

MSNBC announced that O'Donnell, who had frequently filled in for Olbermann before starting his own 10 p.m. show, will take over Olbermann's time slot starting Monday. "The Ed Show," with Ed Schultz, will move to 10 p.m. Cenk Uygur of the Web show "The Young Turks" will fill Schultz's vacated 6 p.m. time slot.

It's unclear what Olbermann's plans are now.

He could give a boost to struggling CNN's prime-time lineup, but Olbermann would mean CNN would make an abrupt shift in its nonpartisan policy. It was not immediately known how quickly Olbermann could switch to another job if he wanted to; such contract buyouts typically include noncompete clauses.

David Brock, founder and CEO of the liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America, said Olbermann "led the charge" against "conservative misinformation in prime time."

"Keith is an innovator and extremely talented broadcaster who showed there was a market for progressive views on cable news," Brock said. "I'm sure we'll be hearing more of him soon, and I eagerly await hearing of his next move."

The mood was different at Newsbusters, a website operated by the conservative Media Research Center: "You guys at Newsbusters should really break out the champagne and party," wrote one reader about Olbermann.

Well, jbird, BBC has been my source since bush was appointed to his first term. They've managed to remain journalistic through the Blair years, etc. The USA is the last place I look for the real news, much less straight reporting when the real news is actually revealed.

Just the first of many heads to roll as the media is further homoginized and dumbed down. There will be fewer and fewer options in the future for dissenting voices and truth. Thanks to Keith for all the years-you will be missed more than you know.

We still have PBS even though the Bush administration tried to change it and cut funding. They also got rid of Bill Moyer who later returned. This is a Fahrenheit 451 of the media. Thomas Paine, Thomas Nast and John Steinbeck would be disappointed at the current state of the media.

I also look to BBC for news. It covers the entire world and has no war agenda.

I hope Mr. Olbermann finds a new home, at least a personal column/blog.

This is what happened in Germany before the "big war". Get you to focus on things like sports and mindless entertainment and shut-off the truth in broadcasting. It's been coming, now we need independent network owners to continue to supply us with the real story. Oprah???? HELP!

They thanked HIM, but not the VIEWERS as Stevie said....They gave the VIEWERS a big f-u....that's a great way to award 8 years of loyalty to those who made Countdown the highest rated show on MSNBC.

Reading between the lines, I have to agree:

          Olbermann's prime-time show is the network's top-rated.

Olbermann had signed a new four-year contract with MSNBC two years ago.

His prior suspension (which the network said it regretted, and then had to eat crow for regarding Scarborough) aside, he WAS a money maker and a ratings boon for the network, AND launched the platform for Maddow, O'Donnell and Shultz, AND as Fox's viewership continued to fall (and the confidence it's "viewers" showed in it), and as Beck and Hannity were dropped by big market radio stations, one has to ponder WHY? And the only conclusion I'm left with is "Comcast". - you don't bench your star QB when you're behind in the last two minutes of the game and have the ball....it doesn't make sense to me.

Had he been at the end of his contract, that'd be different. Had he quit, that'd be different. Had he violated the terms of his contract, that'd be different....none of that happened - he was fired - and it smells.

Now, here are a couple questions - and we won't know the answers any time soon (if ever).

          1. Who made the decision?

          2. Was it a breach of contract? (without seeing it, we don't know what provisions it may contain)

          3. Does Olbermann now have to abide by a "non-compete clause" that is enforceable?

          4. Does Olbermann have a remedy?

          5. Is Olbermann, Maddow, etc, somehow prohibited from discussing the matter?

          6. How will this affect Comcast/NBC Universal's bottom line?

I'm curious how this will develop, because I just can't see him shutting up about this....but again, we DON'T have all the facts - or many for that matter.

I am not as elegant as Keith Olbermann, nor ever will be. MSNBC having lost its captain, I am likely to have MSNBC blocked on line and on TV (if that is possible), until, atleast, he is given the opportunity to host Countdown forever. So Keith, which network will be my favorite from now on, hoping it has the same time slot(s)... simple poetic justice.

This was obviously a foolish ultraconservative style move by Comcast. I predicted this a week ago. Well, I have news for them. I wont watch anything in their 8pm slot now. They can lose ratings for all I give a sh#t! I'm angry, but it is tempered by the idea, that soon they will realize they just lost a ratings Bonanza in Keith! BTW I have a feeling Rachel either walked off tonight, or was suspended in prep for her firing. Lord knows Comcast has to create an adequate excuse 1st! Either way, her absence was no coincidence.

Keith Olbermann has been fired. Well, at least no one can say he wasn't given a chance. They could probably take his prima donna persona if he had brought home the bacon, but anyone would eventually get tired of having your flagship host get pounded by the competition. Move Ed Schultz to 7 (central) and let the fun begin.

No other station that is currently on air is looking for an Olbermann, at least not to do what he was doing on MSNBC ( bashing conservatives 95% of the time). If he went to CNN or Headline News ( whatever that channel is that Behar is on) I think they'd make him tone it down some. That is where I would expect him to end up though, next to Nancy Grace and Joy Behar.

Yes, I wonder if Rachel will be back. I've been seeing a lot of Chris Hayes on TRMS lately. Wow, this is stunning to me. MSNBC has lost two viewers in this household!

Yes, I would watch them head to head. Would have to give each one a plexiglass cage and a mute button though or you would never hear anything but screaming. My money would be on O'Reilly. He can think and be calm and Keith sometimes pops and sounds a bit unstable.

I am a libertarian also and would have to agree with him. Olbermann is a bit more out of touch if you get my meaning.....when compared to o reilly who I also cant stand so much.

both are entertainers....its hard to choose between them or the WWE at times.

Right James. My money would be on Olberman in a WWE cage match though.

Unfortunately Anderson Cooper(One of the few fair and balanced journalists CNN has left) seems to think, that there is a non competition clause still in effect, even though comcast just tossed the last 2 years of his contract. He probably won't be able to do TV for those 2 years. Hope he does radio, or gets comfortable writing those books. They'll be the only hard copy books I get from now on.

Well, this frees up my evenings! It was Keith @ 5 and Rachael @ 6 and Chris sometimes as a lead in if I got home in time. So done now! Sorry Rachael - might tune in from time to time! What a stupid thing to do MSNBC!

dont worry fox may be picking him up and paying off msnbc for the no competition clause.

                        be happy.

He was a powder keg waiting to pop. He started out reasonably liberal but lately he has become almost irrational with some of his material. It looked like he was working towards a nervous breakdown. Maybe a break will do him some good. This is an example of what can happen when anyone drifts too far from center; they start losing their self-awareness.

Olbermann is just as bad O'Reilly. Neither are a good source for accurate and fair news.

I have changed the channel on my TV, changed my Home Page from MSNBC to CNN and will miss viewing Morning Joe, Rachel Maddow and Chris Mathews, but I will cut MSNBC from my life until they bring Keith back or I will watch whatever station he goes to.

Comcast is obviously conservative. Whatever they touch means regulation and fees, they even want the right to regulate the Internet. I liked his show, looks like msnbc is going in the "right" direction.

I loved Countdown with Keith Olberman - he'll pop up elsewhere and I'll watch his new show wherever that is going to be. Studios just switch things up from time to time thinking they'll get better ratings. Maybe they will and maybe wherever Keith goes he'll boost the ratings through the roof - I hope so. He's a true professional.
