msnbc.com News— A 14-year-old boy died of exposure while walking home from a friend's house in the southwestern Alaska village of Kipnuk, Alaska State Troopers said.
The temperature was 50 degrees below zero, with winds up to 70 mph, local NBC station KTUU reported.
Meanwhile, a bitter blast of sub-zero temperatures and minus 50-degree wind chills gripped the northeast Monday. Vast swaths of Canada were also in a deep freeze.
Alaska Troopers said a search
was initiated at around 8 p.m. (12 a.m. ET Monday) Sunday
after Brandon Anaver failed to turn up at his home,
The Anchorage Daily News reported.
The search team was able to find Anaver's footprints, but could not follow them because of blowing snow.
The searchers also used VHF radio and conducted home-to-home inspections until the deteriorating conditions forced searchers to call off the search for the night.
On Monday, a tribal police officer told troopers
Anaver's body was found 1.5 miles downriver.
Troopers said it appeared Anaver died from exposure to the extreme elements, and that there was no evidence of foul play.
