PARIS — Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman says she is "shocked and disgusted" by a video in which designer John Galliano says he loves Adolf Hitler.

Portman says in a statement that "as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way."

Both stars work with Christian Dior. Portman is spokesmodel for Miss Dior Cherie perfume. Galliano has been suspended as Dior's creative director pending an investigation into an alleged anti-Semitic incident in a Paris cafe last week.

Portman's statement was provided Tuesday to The Associated Press after a video posted online showed Galliano, in a different incident, drunkenly telling a cafe patron, "I love Hitler."

Portman won the best actress Oscar on Sunday for "Black Swan."

Ugh, as well she should be offended--heck, most people would be!! I'm not Jewish and I find the remark offensive. Drunkenly or not... just inexcusable.

Well...........apparently saying he loved Hitler was NOT the only thing he said

""People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f****** gassed.""

Randi is a girl

I'm actually really glad that she 'boycotted' him. Usually hollywood stars don't want to say anything to get caught up in that sort of situation and try to keep everyone happy. Instead of trying to play the nice girl saying things like 'poor guy, he needs help' and 'he needs to go to rehab'.

Given Portman's great-grandparents died in Auschwitz, I don't think she would support Galliano now.

Ugh, there is actual video available courtesy of CNN where it is clear what this scumbag of a designer is saying--and it appears to be from an earlier incident at the same parisian cafe.

I'm not going to post it because it upset me so much--but the man is scum!!! He should be ashamed of himself and just go and crawl into the deepest hole in Earth never to be seen again. It's people like him that make this world worse.

Yup indeed the Republicans were the Party of Desegregation and the Southern Democrats the party of the landed slave owners. It wasn't until the 1960's that they flipped places and the Dixiecrats, like Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, switched to the Republican Party which took on the mantle of the anti civil rights side.

It would be of more import to know what the larger fashion industry thinks of this, than a paid company shill/actress, as is why freedom of speech is against the law in France. Regardless of that country's deeply disturbing involvement with Germany during WWII, when words are made illegal, there's always a 'bad boy' around the corner to poke a stick at that law. All well and good, however, that DIor/LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton suspended and intends to fire their employee for violating company policy.

Company policy? How about human decency? Freedom of speech is not the same in France as it is here. On the other hand we were never occupied by the Nazis, and none of us who lived here were sent to a death camp by them. That tends to leave some emotional scars, and that in turn tends to produce an unforgiving attitude toward those who spread hateful intolerant ideas.

But despite French laws about prohibited Nazi speech, no one has said he is being prosecuted by the law. He is only being sanctioned by his employer and by the society that rejects his kind of bigotry. And that is not an issue of free speech. Speech is never really free because it has social consequences. The concept of free speech only protects the speaker from the government. It does not protect him from society.

Especially in these contemporary times of ours. No tragedy should be taken lightly. I'm glad Ms. Portman has taken a stand... Everyone should. This is wrong no matter how you slice it.

As for the man being currently suspended--heck, if I were his employer, he would've been summarily fired no matter what he said, effective immediately. There is no room in this planet for people who adore men of the likes of Adolph Hitler.

littlechanges, I was wondering when someone to bring up "freedom of speech" and it didn't take long. No matter what the French law is, this cretin's employer chooses not to have Nazi sympathizers in prominent positions where their viewpoints are likely to offend customers and thus affect the bottom line. Does that make it any easier for you to understand? I prefer to think that Dior took a principled stand, but even if it was profit-based, I'm glad the guy is losing his job.

In a sober moment Mr. Galliano as a flamboyant gay individual might reflect that had he actually experienced a living Hitler during the occupation of France he most probably would have found himself incarcerated in a concentration camp in very short order as many thousands of gays did under Hitler's evil hateful regime. And had he been working in England he might have been killed by a bomb or a V-2 rocket visited upon him by the object of his drunken infatuation.

offensive and stupid? Absolutely!..... But who hasn't said or done something stupid and or offensive that we later regret while drunk at some point in our lives?

So see if thats his actual opinion while sober or if it was just a stupid drunken comment that he regrets. If it was said in an everyday conversation it would be different.

Lets remember, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.... and we all live in glass houses.

I know I have done it, My girl friend and I were at a bar once dancing and a Black guy came up and made an inappropriate comment to her and a few words got exchanged where I called the guy a dumb N***er.... Do I actually feel that way about black people? absolutely not, but at the time it was the thing I could say that would be most offensive to him in the heat of the moment. Did I regret it after? Sure.

So are you saying that being drunk is a green light to say anything without repercussions?

Quite frankly my friends have been quite drunk and none of them have ever in their lives said they love Hitler.

Your comment is completely different than this drunk escapade given you were in a bar with your gf and a black man came up and made an inappropriate comment. Hitler as been dead since 1945. He did not come up to anyway to necessitate someone saying they love him.

No I'm not saying It's a green light, What I'm saying is that everyone has said or done SOMETHING rude or offensive while drinking (this guys just happened to be a hitler comment). Thats why I said to see if that really is his opinion or if he has made comment like that while sober. Who knows he may not even remember making the comment depending on how much he had. Yes he should be embarrassed and feel ashamed, but @!$%# happens. If you made an offensive comment on your own time should you be suspended or fired from your job for it? Of course not, and I'm quite sure most people would be suing their employer for wrongful dismissal.

Not to mention, even if he actually does feel that way, as offensive as the comment is, he is entitled to his opinion and to feel anyway he likes. Taking away his right to say what he wants is the first step to taking away everyones rights to speak their mind.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation, or both as stated in the 1st and 14th Amendments to the Constitution of the United States, to express information, ideas, and opinions free of government restrictions based on content.

A FREE PRESS, WHICH leads to an informed populace, is essential to liberty. As Thomas Jefferson put it:

The basis of our government being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate for a moment to prefer the latter.

Censorship is the suppression of speech or other communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the general body of people.

No he actually is not. This happened in France, not the US. US Freedom of Speech does not apply to Europe or France in this case.

jamithy, have you ever heard the expression "in vino veritas"? Look it up and examine your conscience a little more deeply. And what is the point of commenting on the U.S. Constitution/Bill of Rights when discussing an incident which occurred in France involving French citizens? Are you suggesting that our laws apply worldwide? In any event, there are many examples in our own country of employers firing people for statements they find offensive to their customers. That pitcher for Atlanta who made racist remarks in Sports Illustrated is one. He was perfectly free to have any viewpoint he wishes, but the Braves rightly decided that he could not use their organization as a springboard for his racism. (In other words, SI would not have quoted the guy had he not been a player.)

actually here are articles 18 and 19 from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights..... to which France is a signatory and it was in fact drafted in Paris France....

          Article 18.

          • Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

I called the guy a dumb N***er.... Do I actually feel that way about black people?

Of course you do. Otherwise you NEVER would have said something so stupid, drunk or not. Also, when a person does make such a statement, drunk or otherwise, they would be naive not to expect some sort of ramification. You're damned lucky you didn't get your teeth knocked out.

Galliano is losing his job, and he should. Dior can't afford to have such a moron working for them. If they allowed him to retain his employment, they would lose a hell of a lot of money and the reputation of their company would be severely damaged.

except for the fact that his comment did not breach those subjects. Saying "I love Hitler" is not defaming anyone or discriminating against anyone nor is it anti-semitic or denying the Holocaust. It may very well imply that he holds those opinions but he did not express them, he simply made the comment "I love hitler" which he is completely free to do.

I can't stand pro-lifers who call women who get abortions "murderers"... I find that offensive. I also find people who blab their religious beliefs in public offensive, but do I think that any thing they say about their personal feelings on these matters should be banned just because it offends me? NO! because there are plenty of opinions that I have that I'm sure some people would find offensive but I still want the right to say them.

Mongolians view Genghis Khan as a National hero and he made Adolf Hitler look like an amateur when it came to holocausts but they don't ban all mention of him.

No actually I don't, do a little research about alcohol and its affect on the brain. And as forgetting my teeth knocked out, its he who is fortunate given his offensive comment was the instigator to my somewhat inebriated response.

My point is that I don't have to agree with the guys comment and neither do you, but you should be damned ready to uphold his right to say and think it. Because eventually it will be something you say that get banned next. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

For people who live in a country where they demand and get the right to say whatever they like, offensive or not, You are sure quick to condemn someone else for speaking their mind just because they don't happen to be in the US.

                What a joke.

Ridiculous no one attempted to supress his right to free speech, I'm sure he could say it again if he liked. He learned the hard way that just because you have the right to say something, does not mean you should say it. Dior also has a right to hire or terminate the employment of those people they feel properly or does not properly represent their company. Being drunk is not a valid excuse, being a drunken idiot spouting off antisemitism is definitely not a valid excuse and does not properly represent the best interests of the company he works for.

After reading these posts, I had to see a video of Galliano's slur.

He was one drink away from unconsciousness! No doubt, he's a jerk, but should we give any credibility to his comments (or acknowledge them)? The troubled man needs to detoxify his body and soul.

Never heard of him before and hopefully this is the last time I'll ever think about him.

according to international law... he does. It is a basic HUMAN right.

And my biggest problem is that so many Americans are so quick to jump on the band wagon and applaud his firing, when they so vehemently protect and exercise their freedom of speech... They should be condemning it. But then thats the typical response from people isn't it? They are fine with it as long as its something they personally agree with or that benefits them, but if its something they dislike or that offends them then they are quick to stomp on someone elses rights

and if anti semitic statements are illegal in france, (which i dont believe his were) then everyone who has made an anti-muslim comment including all their politicians lately should be fired.... because arabs are semitic peoples as well.

Firing him was a sound business decision. That is what it boils down to. I'm not saying he shouldn't say what he wants, but if he does he'd better understand that there are going to be repercussions. Just because you can say a thing doesn't necessarily mean you should.

according to international law... he does.

Oh, ok...so let's let international law just trump the laws of every country? No, not gonna happen.

More ridiculous posting from jamithy1. Its a moot point the French government has already stated he was in violation of their laws, when you live in or visit another country you are to abide by the laws of that land...end of story. You wish not to, then do not live or visit there period.
