NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Friday denied that he was criticizing Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman when he suggested her pregnancy was glamorizing the idea of having children outside of marriage.

Huckabee, who is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination, earlier this week complained about the perception of celebrities like Portman having children while unmarried. Portman, who won an Oscar for best actress for her role in "Black Swan," is expecting a child with fiance Benjamin Millepied.

"One of the things that is troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, `Hey look, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine,'" Huckabee told radio host Michael Medved on Monday. "But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie."

Huckabee made the comments after Medved mentioned the Oscars and Portman's pregnancy. Huckabee said the public wasn't seeing the financial struggles single mothers face.

Huckabee also said in the interview that "it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out-of-children wedlock."

A publicist for Portman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

On Friday, Huckabee accused the "Hollywood media" of distorting comments that he said were more about society as a whole and not Portman. Huckabee praised Portman as an actress and said he's glad she and Millepied are getting married. Huckabee said he wasn't trying to attack Portman or single mothers.

"My comments were about the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can't get a job and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death," Huckabee said in a statement posted on his political action committee's website. "That's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock."

It's the second time this week that Huckabee has stepped back from comments he's made while promoting his new book. Huckabee suggested in a radio interview on Monday that President Barack Obama's childhood in Kenya shaped his worldview — even though Obama did not visit Kenya until he was in his 20s.

Obama's grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama, was detained in a 1952 uprising against British colonial rule in Kenya. Huckabee said childhood stories of the Mau Mau rebellion would lead President Obama to want to remove from the Oval Office the bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who ordered a crackdown against that uprising.

The executive director of Huckabee's political action committee later said the former governor misspoke and meant to reference Obama's childhood in Indonesia, where he lived from the ages of 5 to 10. He didn't explain the reason Huckabee mentioned the Mau Mau uprising.

The winner of the Iowa caucuses in 2008, Huckabee has said he's seriously considering another run for president. His national book tour schedule includes stops in Iowa and other early GOP contests.

Huckabee's comments on Portman echoed remarks Dan Quayle made in 1992 when he went after the TV series "Murphy Brown" by saying its depiction of a single mother was irresponsible and set a bad example for America. The Republican vice president said the fictional character was "mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another `lifestyle choice.'"

Wow!

I often wondered how a man who seemed to have a reasonable outlook and the capacity to dialog across party lines never really made it out of the starting gate.

Fortunately the antics of this fellow, and those of Newt are still fresh enough in the public mind that neither of them can mount a credible threat to the POTUS.

No question about it, these Republican neanderthals still haven't heard of video. Unlike the days of old, every stupid thing they say is forever recorded for history. They are so used to conning people they think they can just say, "Did I do that?"

well, to be fair, being an entertainer gives her a pretty good shot at being a republican senator or presidential candidate.

...and Portman IS much smarter than most republicans.

Governor Huckabee, Does your mother know what you are doing? What ever happened to your Christian ethics? Or is that just facade? Do you have any idea of what a stumbling block you have become? How can I ever explain your behavior to my young grandchildren?

Huckabee is supposedly an ordained, Southern Baptist minister. He probably supports the antics of that whacked out group who protest at slain soldiers funerals.

Any bible thumping person is a dangerous breed. They believe everyone should follow their level of morality. Bash everyone until they come around to their twisted, narrow minded, self righteous way of thinking.

He hasn't got a chance in hell of being president. Can't you picture Huck telling Newt to repent you sinner. Newt will tell Huck, it's okay. God already said I'm forgiven.

Hahahahahahaha!

...oh wait, you were serious?!

Huckabee is just flip-flopping. Never mind the fact that he has almost no chance to beat President Obama in 2012 as he is no moderate.

Yes, I am serious, I am a Christian, and to watching a member of the clergy demonstrate a such disregard for basic Christian ethics is a disgrace. Like Sarah Palin he has done more damage to the Christian message than Jimmy Swigaart, Ted Haggard and Jim Baker together.

He has told outrageous lies about Barack Obama and is using Natalie Portman's pregnancy to divert attention from the fall out of his lies. This man is supposed to be a member of the clergy.

So again yes, I am serious and moreover I have never felt more contempt or disgust, than I now feel about Mike Huckabee.

It is telling when they attempt to hijack Christianity, the economy and our military again and again after failing utterly in everyone of the aforementioned areas.

On behalf of all of these pathetic Philistines I apologize to all of those whom they have used and then discarded.

Wonder if Huckabee heard this one before/ Thou shall not bear false witness.

Or has ever read this --"You must not spread a false report. Do not join the wicked to be a false witness" Exodus 23:1 HCSB

Or how about, Proverbs 6:16-19 HCSB

Six things the LORD hates in fact, seven are detestable to Him

arrogant eyes, a lying tongue hands that shed innocent blood ,

a heart that plots wicked schemes ,

feet eager to run to evil ,

a lying witness who give false testimony,

and one who stirs up troubles among brothers.

The Gonz, He needs to, because there is a verse in the Bible, that he proclaims that says liars will have their place in hell. I am sorely disappointed in this man, because he has went the way of Cain. Lying and then trying to hide it. Just say it, own it, man up Mike and if its worthy of being said, be proud. You in 2 days have made some monumental missteps. Bad sign for a Presidential candidate. Things will haunt you!

One of the basic Golden Rules we all know.

    Luke 6:31

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

    Revelations 21:8

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whore-mongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

I read Huckabee's quote and it certainly sounded like criticism to me. It isn't surprising that this would be the opinion of a former Baptist minister. I wonder why they haven't already gotten married, myself. But I figured it was none of my business. Huckleberry is having a fine time recently, telling bald-faced lies about the President and weighing in on the private life of Natalie Portman. I look forward to his next gaffe.

Natalie Portman is an extremely intelligent, mature and self-sufficient woman of 29 who chose to become a mother.

It would appear that Huckabee only views accidental unwed teen pregnancies as worthy of his Lord.

Republican irony -- they are offended by unwed women getting pregnant ... and then they proceed to defund Planned Parenthood and discourage use of contraceptives.

I agree with Huckabee all the way. I think you have to be from a poorer city like Detroit or Milwaukee to understand that for a multimillionare it is ok to be a single mom, there is enough for nannys etc. For a teenager, a pregnancy is a fast track to poverty and PUBLIC ASSISTANCE and thus HIGHER TAXES AND CRIME RATE. For the good of the child there needs to be a certain income and support system for the single mom and most teenagers do not understand this and these actresses set a bad example for certain teens. Teenager + no father+ pregnancy = poverty. Duh.

Why does it have to be Detroit or Milwaukee? Certainly there are poor farm communities and suburbs as well. BTW, why didn't Huckabee criticize the dads? They should be held equally responsible for thinking with their d*cks instead of their brains. Ask Levi Johnston.

I recall that Huckabee defended Sara Palin's Unmarred Pregnant daughter as a good Christian who made a mistake. However Natalie Portman is Jewish. I wonder if that was a factor in his desire to point to her as an example. I am very tired of these narrow minded bigots hiding behind the first amendment. I am sure that the founding fathers thought we would exercise some common sense, and maybe even good taste, before we opened our mouths too wide.

Don't think that he was criticizing Portman because she is Jewish, as he has clearly defended Israel over and over. It has to do with politics, selling his book and money. He would sell his soul, and some are questioning if he didn't do it already for the almight dollar. How many of you have ever saw one person take their wealth with them when they die? I was a RN and I never had a patient say to me in their dying breath "nurse bring my money." So Mr Huckabee needs to quit with his piousness and begin to practice what he "supposedly preaches."

Huckabee has a serious hate problem and needs to attend to it asap. The man can't help saying what he said apropos to Mr. Obama for what else would one expect from a person reared in Arkansas? He was trained to think in that vein as a child and as the adage states, "the wolf is in the pack and the pack is in the wolf". A person is not a thief because they steal, they steal because they are a thief. How extremely curious Huck failed to mention Palin's daughter during his tirad against Miss Portman. Could it be there exists a code at Fox News whereby their employees are sworn to secrecy as it relates to demeaning fellow employees? As for his so-called "minister" status, one wonders what seminary he attended and what Bible he reads and/or believes in?

Huckabee, if indeed you consider yourself an ordained Baptist Minister please take the time to read the Bibilcal account where a woman was taken into custody by all males who accused her of being caught in the act of adultery. The story continues when they brought her to Jesus, he asked her accusers for anyone of them who was without sin to cast the first stone. Without a doubt I'm sure Huckabee is alive today only because he is without sin and Jesus' death has nothing to do with his holier than thou self induced salvation which has served to keep him on this side of the grave here on terra firma.

Huckabee claims to be an ordained minister. I wonder why did he abandon his ministry? Could it possibly be he wasn't making enough money? After all, most Pastors are not becoming rich leading a local congregation. As a minister he certainly should know that Jesus' pulpit was portable, He never pastored a Church, never owned a home and practically borrowed everything he needed. So Preacher, what's your claim to fame other than spewing opinions you know nothing about the subject matter therof? Let's get very serious here, if indeed you call yourself a Pastor, you rendered your flock the greatest blessing they probably will ever receive; you left because you were that "wolf in sheep's clothing".
