— Spring’s hottest trend swings back to the disco days. Inspired by some of my favorite style icons — Jerry Hall, Bianca Jagger, Lauren Hutton and Yves Saint Laurent — this season offers a modern take on the era that is both soft and sophisticated. TODAY style editor and Bobbie.com’s Bobbie Thomas shares ways to bring ’70s flair into 2011.

Fit-and-flare denim
Curvy girls rejoice, as denim that’s fitted through the thigh and flares just past the knee offers a flattering silhouette. It’s not exactly a boot-cut or a groovy bell-bottom, but a welcome alternative to the skinny jean, and the perfect style to buy slightly longer and wear with a pair of platforms. A cotton peasant blouse or retro striped top will offer a nostalgic touch without feeling overdone. (Striped Top, $59.90, Odora Sandal, $48-$50, JCP.com; Stella Jean, $69.90, Express.com; Blouse, Clogs, $24.50-$29.95, Gap.com; Sunglasses, Denim Leggings, $4.50-$10.95, Childrensplace.com)

Mini skirts and dresses
Minis take a backseat to this season’s longer hemlines. Midi-length dresses and skirts are somewhere between ladylike and hippie. When it comes to skin, this demure, less-is-more look feels very fresh for spring. Trend seekers can don a floppy hat and clogs for the full effect, while a belt and chunky sandals are a more classic way to go. Finish off with a cross-body or feminine flap bag. (Bar III tank, $38, Macys.com; Fukani Patchwork Skirt, $98, Anthropologie.com; T-strap sandal, $89, Zara.com)

High-waisted pants
Pants with a little leg room and a higher waist have an effortless confidence about them. Images of Mary Tyler Moore “working it” come to mind. To top off slacks with a wider leg, try a tie-neck pussy-bow blouse to add just the right feminine touch. Adorn your ensemble with gold accents. Consider a longer-length necklace with a prominent pendant or a flashy belt buckle.
(Fletcher By Lyell Tie Neck Blouse, $59, Urbanoutfitters.com; Wide Leg Pant, $59.95, Hm.com; Hiala sandal, $89, Ninewest.com)

Jumpsuits
Although 20-somethings may try to revive the slinky stretch-jersey jumpsuits from Studio 54, the rest of us shouldn’t shy away from a posh one-piece. A relaxed romper will not only work on every body type, but all ages as well. The trick is finding the right one. If you have narrow hips, opt for a drop waist; fuller hips should stick with a style that cinches in higher. A polished, tailored jacket can help tone down the trendy for work, while some organic bohemian accessories add a fun element for play. (Silver & Wood Necklace, $12.95, Blush Blazer, $49.95, Hm.com; Aqua Silk Racerback Jumpsuit, $98, Bloomingdales.com)
