— Stocks ended the day mixed as tepid earnings reports weighed on major indexes. Rising commodity costs were making investors cautious.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 26.11 points, or 0.2 percent, to 12,479.88.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.13, or 0.2 percent, to 1,335.25.
The Nasdaq composite rose 5.72, or 0.2 percent, to 2,825.88
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 902.37, or 7.8 percent.
The S&P is up 77.61, or 6.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 173.01, or 6.5 percent.
