WASHINGTON — The retired Coast Guard admiral who has served as chief White House usher for the past four years is taking a senior post at one of the Department of Homeland Security's largest agencies.
The White House announced Friday that Stephen Rochon will join U.S. Customs and Border Protection. As chief White House usher, Rochon managed the 132-room mansion and helped plan everything from state dinners to the annual Easter egg roll.
The New Orleans native was the first African-American in the post.
President George W. Bush appointed Rochon in February 2007. After taking office in January 2009, President Barack Obama asked him to stay.
In his new role, Rochon will work on improving border security and easing the flow of goods and people across the borders.
