DALLAS — Former President George W. Bush's decision not to appear at ground zero with President Barack Obama after the death of Osama bin Laden is consistent with his desire to keep a low public profile, former first lady Laura Bush said Thursday.

"He's made the real decision not to enter into politics or the public eye," Laura Bush told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Bush said she and her husband were out to dinner Sunday night when they received word that Obama wanted to speak with him. The former president went home to take the call informing him that U.S. military forces had killed Osama bin Laden in a raid of his compound in Pakistan, she said.

"We're very, very proud of our military and our intelligence services. It was risky and it was dangerous for our members of the military," she said at a Dallas elementary school after announcing grants from her foundation for school libraries.

The former president congratulated Obama and military and intelligence personnel in a statement Sunday night, calling bin Laden's death "a victory for America."

She said Bush feels that acting presidents alone should preside over such official ceremonies as the one held Thursday at ground zero. She told the AP that her husband declined an invitation to attend Thursday's event in New York because "that's for President Obama to do at this point."

Earlier this week, George Bush's spokesman, David Sherzer, said the former president appreciated the offer to attend the ground zero event but choses to remain out of the spotlight during his post-presidency.

George Bush was in power on Sept. 11, 2001, when agents from bin Laden's al-Qaida network hijacked planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, killing nearly 3,000 people in the worst terrorist attack on American soil.

Bush sent U.S. forces against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan in October 2001.

He famously appeared at ground zero days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, using a bullhorn to tell those gathered: "I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."

Laura and George Bush moved to Dallas after he left office in 2009. Both released books last year and made several media appearances to promote them, but otherwise they have stayed largely out of the public eye. They do make appearances for events related to the George W. Institute, which has put on conferences this year including one on the nation's economy and another on helping Afghan women achieve economic success.

The institute is part of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which is being built on the campus of Southern Methodist University and is set to be completed in 2013.

I, for one, appreciate the former President's desire to stay out of the public eye. I desire not to see him or be reminded that he was once our president. So he and I finally agree about something, and that's about as close to kum-ba-yah as we're gettin' I guess, so let's just call it good.

Is it just me, or does that pic of the former first lady look like it's a statue from Madame Tussaud's?

Well, he didn't want to "misunderestimate" the number of people showing up and thought he might be too close to "all them chemical resides...residures....er...resid....ya know...leftovers."

And isn't there a "nucular" plant nearby "somewheres"?

        It aint so-

Reading a children's book while the President's country is under attack seems ripe for call out,

You call it petty, I call it apt.

I thought W refusal to attend this obvious landmark event was self-centered. I thought it was nice of Me Obama to offer an invitation.

Equating a verbal gaffe which I assume you have never made a gaffe, but have you sat reading a book for 7 minutes around little human shields while the nations underwent the worlds worst terrorist attack. You didn't, I didn't , Obama didn't.

I am curious what you expected Bush to do at that point. Do you think he could have stopped the attacks by leaving at that point? Or freak out the kids by throwing down the book and screaming "holy @!$%# we're under attack!!!"?

That being said Obama misspoke, we all do it and it's not that big a deal. Bush did the right thing, respectfully declining the offer while congratulating Obama on the success of the mission, and Obama showed real class in inviting Bush to the ceremony. I think this one is a win for everybody.

        Baron -

Agreed. I think also worth noting is the fact that if Bush had attended, there is no way he could have pleased everyone. Some would have viewed his presence as trying to usurp the limelight from Obama just as others view his lack of presence as discourteous. This was a no-win situation for him.

He did the right thing by maintaining his commitment to staying low-key and congratulating Obama. I sincerely think there are some that despise him so much, they're actually upset that he handled this correctly and deprived them of the opportunity to criticize him at the event.

        BB-

Calm down, it's a typo (a funny one I'll admit) Since you don't seem to be able to figure it out here's a hint - Mr.

        Baron-

Do you think he could have stopped the attacks by leaving at that point?

Which means he also could have continued "clearing brush" too had he been doing that. No problem.

Or freak out the kids by throwing down the book and screaming "holy @!$%# we're under attack!!!"?

Setting aside for a moment that you see that as the only option-

        ABSO-@!$%#iNG-LUTELY

((((((("Let's see - Tend to issues potentially endangering 300 million Americans vs Saving a few grade school kids from upset and interruption of My Pet Goat - What should one do? I just don't know. hmmmmm... 300M or 20 kids, 300M or 20 kids - this is a toughie.")))))))

Also forgetting for a moment as President and CIC that is exactly when his country needed him most, Bush decides -

        "Nope I'm gonna read"

Here's Bush's campaign speech on the matter -

".....and if our country is attacked by terrorists, I WILL read children's books".

It's consistent for Bush to stay out of the limelight. So this isn't a big deal.

What I think is bigger news (and hasn't been mentioned) is why Clinton skipped out of this event as well. He HASN'T said he's going to maintain a low profile, and cited a "scheduling conflict" when invited to this event. His wife is the SOS, for godssake. Why is no one mentioning hsi absence?

Probably because he is less relevant to the event. Bush was president when the attack occurred, Obama is the president now. That has more symbolic meaning than Clinton, who really wasn't involved though he could be there for his wife's sake.

I dunno, Baron. Cinton had his own run-ins with bin Laden. Several of them. And his wife is SoS. He also received an invitation, but declined.

Seems to me that the reasoning the left is giving to exuse their feigned outrage at Bush's lack of attendance, would also be applicable to Clinton.

Since you're claiming this as "truth", how about quantifiable data to back your claim up? When you're done with that, explain why Clinton declined the invitation as well. When you're done with that, explain why Bush is going to be at the 9/11 10th Anniversary and has been at every 9/11 Anniversary event if he's so "embarrassed"

Some people just can't let go of their partisan past. What I find funny is that this current President is much more Hawkish than even President Bush and has also abused the priveledges of office to get revenge on those who cause him problems. Not that I have much of a problem with it as I dislike the anti-war protesters about as much as President Obama does. Still, people will hold onto their partisan beliefs thinking that one President is better over a name.

I still have friends in the military who give me information which gave me more of an indepth look at how the Osama bin Laden search was going. The same people searching then were searching for Osama when he was caught. Nothing changed except for a name and from that name we found the house where Osama was staying.

I've been shot, stabbed, set on fire, and would do it again for this country. But please don't tell me how great Bush is, or talk about things you have no idea what you're saying. The Bush family keep a low profile only when it comes to being in the spot light of others. Really getting fed up with the right wing Bushes that won't stand and except accountability.

Sorry, I only read History, and current event facts. I'm good with math, science, geography, biology and understanding BS from fact, you seem to lack those talents if you're reading progressive liberal sites. I make my own decisions based on fact, not what other people say to be fact. I bet you're a Rush Limbaugh pen pal. See, I know that if George H. W. Bush had kept his nose out of the Saudis A$$, for Oil War, bin Laden's al-Qaida would never have been. History tells the fact. The WMD's, was a Bush baby he had a dream about, it wasn't based on fact. Bush wanted to kill Saddam for trying to have daddy assassinated, he said it not me, they made it personal, and the country paid for it. Libya is Libya, civil war, started by them.... I'm waiting on another trip by McCain to get more facts on this one. Personally, I'd bring all American troops home, cut off all aid, and let them go at it.

Good. For starters, paragraphs are your friend. Learn how to use them.

Secondly, what do you make of these quotes BEFORE Bush took office?

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."
--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."
--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face."
              --Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."
--Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
Letter to President Clinton, signed by:
-- Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
-Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies."
-- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

Al Jazeera Posts Usama bin Laden Posthumous Message!

Today, Al Jazeera posted a posthumous message from dead Al Qaida leader Usama bin Laden. Here is a transcript of the text from it's original Arabic:

"Hello to all. If you are receiving this message, I am already dead. I knew it was only a matter of time once the Americans replaced the incompetent President Bush that I would be found out and killed. Allah be praised."

"Now that I'm gone, I have a few people that I would personally like to thank and never got the chance to. First, I'd like to thank Ronald Reagan, George Schultz and William Casey for getting me involved in the terrorism business way back in the early 1980's. Without their help in obtaining weapons from the CIA, I would never have been able to make it in the terrorist business. Who knew how successful I could have become way back then? They took a chance on me, and I hope that I lived up to, and exceeded, their expectations."

"Next, I like to thank members of the Bush Security team. Their negligence made the attacks on the World Trade Center possible. Those attacks still stand as the largest terrorist attack on record. A record that won't soon be broken. My special thanks go out to George W. Bush for ignoring a Presidential Daily Bulletin of Aug. 6, 2001, five weeks before the attacks, that might have prevented them. That fact made all of this possible. I'd still be trying to make it in my dad's construction business, which I hated, if that hadn't been ignored. And thanks for giving me a pass at Tora Bora."

"Another big hug to Dick Cheney. His Abu Graib prison idea and his torture techniques did more to boost Al Qaida than anything I could have done alone. His wonderful idea to invade Iraq to combat terrorism probably bought me a few extra years in Pakistan, as attention diverted away from Afghanistan. Hope your corporate buddies made lots of money on the war there. I heard you wanted to become a Navy Seal because you can shoot people in the face, your specialty. LOL. I'm sure we'll see each other again real soon. I'll save you a place in the afterlife. "

"And finally, a big shout out to Sarah Palin. We never met, but I hear you want to see a final picture. I'd have sent you an autographed copy myself, but I didn't hear you wanted one until it was too late. I saw you on satellite TV a couple of years ago and you are one hot Mama Grizzly. I'm told to expect virgins, but if you're ever in the area, let me know. Pick out a final picture for me so that my adoring public will be satisfied. Grrrrrrrr Mama!"

"And one more thing, thanks to the American taxpayers for all the CIA money I received while fighting the Russians in Afghanistan. I hardly spent any of it. It's in the billions now. I suppose now that I'm gone, I can tell you where I hid it. It's in a cave in Afghanistan 500 paces north of a marker in the shape of a.............."

Big deal President Bush isn't at the Obama campaign dog and pony show. Personally if I was President Bush I would have told Obama to go take a flying @!$%#ing leap. Especially since Obama seems to have a problem actually honoring the fallen on well 9/11. Oh thats right I keep forgetting thats the day when he lost 19 muslim brothers and was in the process of helping his buddies build a celebration mosque as he was preparring them for a Merry Merry Ramadan Christmas in the White House.

How about having a Navy Seal team shoot Bin Laden in the FREAKIN' EYE...is that HONORING the FALLEN enough?

Ew...seriously....have you no decency at all?

So like some extremely unpatriotic Americans I've seen on the vine, you still want to tear down our PRESIDENT?.... can't even be for AMERICA at all then?

...and you're still betting on destruction to win, place and show.

"pandering to those who would damage this nation."

You are talking about the war protesters, Cindy Sheehan, the women in pink, those who you called "war mongers," "babykillers," Murtha who falsely accused our troops of abuse, the idiot politician who said the war couldn't be won, the one who told the troops the people back home didn't support them, all those who didn't vote for war and those who didn't vote for it after they voted for it? Isn't it just like the left, oppose war every step of the way but then rush out front to take credit when it suits their politics.

Every Liberal out there just loves making it sound like Obama himself pulled the trigger. Obama didn't do @!$%# except simply take credit once again for the hard work and diligence of others. There was never any doubt bin Laden would be found and brought to justice. It just happened to happen while Obama was President.

Ew...seriously....have you no decency at all?

Yes, that is why I am not a Liberal nor Obama supporter.

So like some extremely unpatriotic Americans I've seen on the vine, you still want to tear down our PRESIDENT?.... can't even be for AMERICA at all then?

He is "your" President...not mine, he declared me an "enemy" of his as he pandered and cheapened himself and his office as he was campaigning for the latino vote. I am patriotic to the United States of America and not this traitorous piece of scum you people saddled us with.

...and you're still betting on destruction to win, place and show.

Nope, not at all I do not care if Obama places or shows, but I will do all I can to be sure he doesn't win. No one remembers second place, unfortunately the destruction that Obama has caused will not be to easy to forget and will take years to fix. Only bright side of that coin is that no one believed that Obama would so totally vindicate President Bush so fast or completely.

Pretty much EXACTLY how I felt about Bush.

...and yet I realized that he was ELECTED by the people of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. So, I spent 8 years with him acting as my husband's military Commander-in-Chief.

I was mature enough to realize that even though I didn't agree with Bush's policies (ANY of them), he WAS our PRESIDENT and to treat him with disrespect WHILE HE WAS PRESIDENT would be to treat America with disrespect.

Even though I completely disagreed with him, Cheney and Rumsfeld going into Iraq, and had my doubts (even in the beginning) of their reasoning.... I would have NEVER called him a traitorous piece of scum.

              You make me sick.

No matter how you feel about GW the man took a public beating for about 5 years of his Presidency. And it wasn't just from Democrats. You don't get to 24% from Democrats and independents combined. Republicans turned on him for his bailout call and for failing to deliver the kind of victory in Iraq they so desired. By the end of his term Bin Laden was an afterthought.

But truly it was Cheney and his neocon goons that brought the man down. Bush had no real foreign policy of his own coming into office. Brother Jeb was closer to the neocons than Georgie. He accepted the neocon foreign policy in order to avoid a tussle at the 2000 Philadelphia GOP Convention when it was for a short while suggested Cheney take the top spot.

I pity the man abit. Not a popular view among my lib friends but he was never meant to be a leader. As Governor he delegated authority and as President it was taken from him. The wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time. The reason I believe he keeps the low profile. He wants no more of politics. The "Bush Doctrine" and "The Decider" were both laughable terms with no relation to reality.

Bush was/is as inept today as ever. I'm sure he misses Cheney's hand up his skirt, directing him where and how to squat to pee.

I agree. The people that think Obama should take all the credit are crazy. Sure he had to give the order he's commander and chief. But with no military experience he had one hell of a lot of help. Bush declined to go to ground zero. There isn't any political gain but there is for Obama,he's good at that.

do you really think that constitutes "the people" that ken was talking about above?

Looking at the full context of his sentence (rather than just two words of it)..."yes". I really think 'the people' who believe Obama deserves full credit are crazy.

Just as I'm sure you believe 'the people' who think he deserves no credit are likewise, crazy.

'The people' implies 'more than one person'. And from what I've seen on the Vine, there is more than one person that believes Obama deserves sole credit.

'The people' is not a slight. Nor is it a generalization. It speaks solely to the individuals that believe that way. Not the party or constituency as a whole.

greck - this is the last time I'll say anything - but I do want to apologize for being so snippy with you. It was uncalled for. I'll just not correspond with PatN any longer - no need to keep stirring the pot. Take care.

Bush doesn't show up because he knows the crowd would be happier to see him and not OBAMA....Simple as that, and he isn't one to want to show up the one now who is suppose to be a President....

This is not the only event that George Bush has bowed out from....He has stated he wants to remain low key...He hasn't given his opinion on anything that OBAMA has said and done....He stays closed mouth on that...but the President in office can't say the same thing...he is like a kid brother shouting he did it, it is his fault....blame, blame, blame...You know what they say about Karma....OBAMA it is coming for you.

I was surprised by a NYC police officer interviewed this morning on MSNBC. I don't know if he intended to insult the President but he said something about being glad that that Obama is "getting around" to visiting ground zero today. That didn't sit right with me at all. Obama was not the President when the attack happened. He cannot attend every anniversary for every good or bad thing that has happened to this country. I should think that it is gratifying to learn that one of the first orders he gave as President was to find bin Laden. This seems like the ideal and appropriate first visit for him to make as President.

Particularly since President Obama was visiting the OTHER building Bush allowed to get hit, the Pentagon. Guess he just wanted to kill Bin Laden before. That is ok with me. My Brother saw him at ground zero today, he was pretty happy and satisfied.

Laura Bush was a lovely first lady and ironically an education advocate. I supported her fully when she would move out of the white house and set up at the Hay Adams Hotel numerous times. I'm sure their marital problems were not her fault.

I do have to wonder...if Michelle Obama killed somebody with a car, would we never stop hearing about it? You should count yourself fortunate we are not YOU.

IN a mind so simple as Randy's...I guess this makes sense to him....Why is Laura Bush living with George Bush now....if she wanted to leave then she could have and if she wanted to leave now she can....

If Michelle was a Young kid and killed someone while driving...what is called an ACCIDENT....I would imagine people would have forgiven her....but she is up to much, much, more than I will ever forgive her for.

Oh yes...that's right I forgot, along with our usual 50 states we have:

                                              1. Texas

                                              2. Beckansas

                                              3. Texas

                                              4. O'Reillyannoy

                                              5. Texas

                                              6. Hannitucky

                                              and

                                              7. Texas

Looking at school Textbooks, it seems Texas gets 4 more votes than anybody else as to what complete crap is in them...

I know you're speaking of President Obama's comment of "57 States." Considering what we dealt with in terms of GAFFES over the 8 years prior, I just have one thing to say to you...

                                              ready?...

                                              Is THAT all ya got?
