— A teen whose "sweet 16" turned quite sour when the Facebook invite to her party resulted in 1,600 strangers showing up at her house says she feels "terrible" about what happened, and now is reluctant "to go outside because I feel so ashamed and worried."
"And when I go to school the other students laugh at me and I'm the butt of their jokes," the German girl told a newspaper in that country.
The girl, identified only as Thessa, forgot to mark her birthday invite as private on the social networking site, and 15,000 people RSVP'd. Even though she cancelled the party, hordes of birthday well-wishers and those looking to get social in real time showed up.
The birthday girl went into hiding and her parents notified police, with more than 100 officers on the scene to help control the mostly peaceful horde.
According to The Telegraph, the teen told Bild, a German newspaper, "I'm so terribly sorry, I didn't want this to happen at all. When I was sitting with my grandmother on the sofa and heard what was going on I was totally shocked.
"A friend said that bottles were being thrown and fences being broken down. I felt terrible."
Thessa wound up celebrating her birthday in private. And it looks like she'll be doing other things in private as well: the teen says she has abandoned Facebook.
