Weiner draws no defense from Democrats

WASHINGTON — Fellow Democrats pointedly refused to defend Rep. Anthony Weiner on Tuesday, telegraphing an unmistakable eagerness for him to resign after he admitted sending a lewd photo of himself to a woman via Twitter and lying about it.

Republicans swiftly sought political profit from the New York Democrat's predicament, which threatened to deepen when conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart said he had a sexually explicit photo of the 46-year-old congressman.

His political career in extreme jeopardy, Weiner had no public appearances. His spokesman did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

On Monday, after days of denials, the New York lawmaker admitted he had engaged in "several inappropriate conversations conducted over Twitter, Facebook, email and occasionally on the phone with women I had met online."

Alternately apologetic and defiant, he said he neither met nor had physical relationships with any of them, and added, "I am not resigning."

In fact, there is little that party leaders can do to force an errant lawmaker to quit, although House Republicans have moved decisively in the past year to purge their ranks of two men who wound up in embarrassing situations.

Most Democrats maintained an uncomfortable silence about Weiner's future, part of what several senior congressional officials described as a hope that over a few days, Weiner would reconsider his refusal to resign. If not, several noted pointedly, his district might be eliminated when lines are adjusted before the 2012 elections to account for a population shift that will cost New York two House seats.

But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid broke the silence.

"I wish there were some way that I can defend him, but I can't," the Nevada Democrat told reporters. Asked what he would do if Weiner called for advice, he replied he would tell him "call somebody else."

Republicans sought political gain.

"Congressman Weiner's actions and deception are unacceptable and he should resign," GOP chairman Reince Priebus said in a written statement.

"We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation," he said, referring to a request from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi for the House ethics committee to investigate the case.

Leaders of the House Ethics Committee on Tuesday issued their first statement about Weiner, but did not announce an investigation is under way.

"If and when an investigation is appropriate in any matter, the committee will carry out its responsibilities pursuant to our rules and with the utmost integrity and fairness. Pursuant to our rules of confidentiality, we will not have any further comment at this time," said Chairman Jo Bonner, R-Ala., and ranking Democrat Linda Sanchez of California..

Speaking of Pelosi and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the Democratic party chairwoman, Priebus said they either "believe members of Congress are held to a different set of standards or they believe these actions demand his resignation."

Brad Woodhouse, a Democratic National Committee spokesman, referred a request for a comment to Wasserman Schultz's House office. He said the issue was a congressional one, but her spokesman declined comment on whether Weiner should resign.

Separately, the Republican House and Senate campaign organizations called on Democrats to return donations Weiner had made to them.

"Does ... Democrat Senate candidate Joe Donnelly, (D-IN) plan to return the $5,000 he took from his friend Weiner in order to fund his political campaigns?" asked the National Republican Senatorial Committee. There was no immediate reply from Donnelly, a second-term House member who recently announced he would run for the Senate in 2012.

In the House, Democratic Rep. Betty Sutton of Ohio said through an aide she would donate to charity a $1,000 contribution she received from Weiner last year.

Demanding the return of cash from troubled donors has become a standard political tactic in recent years, practiced by both parties.

But the other facts in Weiner's case were anything but routine.

Instead, they reflected the growing impact of social media and little-known websites on the political fortunes of the nation's most powerful elected officials, in this case, a man with ambitions of becoming mayor of New York City.

A poll released Tuesday found that about half of New York City voters think Weiner should hang onto his congressional seat. But most say they want him to stay out of the race to succeed Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2013.

The Marist Poll found 51 percent said Weiner should remain in Congress, while 30 percent said he should step down, and 18 percent said they weren't sure. But 56 percent said Weiner should not run for mayor, while 25 percent said he should. Nineteen percent said they were unsure.

The survey of 379 registered voters was conducted Monday and had a sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Despite fielding numerous questions on Monday, some of them intensely personal about his marriage, Weiner left gaps at his news conference.

He said he could not guarantee that none of the women with whom he exchanged salacious pictures or messages was underage.

Asked whether he had phone sex, he sidestepped. "I was never in the same room as them, I never — had any physical relationship whatever," he said.

Asked whether he could guarantee that there was no X-rated photo in existence of himself, he replied, "No, I cannot."

That issue was first broached by Breitbart, who showed up at Weiner's news conference on Monday before the congressman did.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Breitbart said he had not yet released a sexually explicit photo taken of the congressman unclothed.

He said he would consider releasing the picture if he concludes that Weiner's staff tries to disparage any of the women with whom the congressman flirted online.

"Under the circumstances that those women that he's had these consensual relationships, that their personal information would start to be leaked from his team, I would strongly consider releasing the photo if he wants to make this an attack on these innocent women," he said.

At his news conference, Weiner apologized to the women and to all he misled with his earlier denials, but most often to his wife, Huma Abedin, who was not present.

Abedin, deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, is well-known in her own right in Democratic circles. Some party officials said that was a factor in the general unwillingness to call for Weiner's resignation.

Abedin, who has had no comment on her husband's controversy, was on a flight late Tuesday with Clinton to the Middle East and Africa.

Under House rules, party leaders cannot force a lawmaker to quit, although they can press for a resignation and sometimes do.

Republicans successfully urged Indiana Rep. Mark Souder to take that course last year after he admitted to an extra-marital affair with a member of his staff. They did so again in February, with Rep. Chris Lee of New York, who quit quickly after shirtless photos he sent to a woman he had met on Craigslist were published online.

By contrast, Pelosi issued a call shortly after Weiner's news conference for the House ethics committee to investigate his case to make sure no House rules were broken.

The committee had no comment, and with the House not scheduled to meet for nearly a week, it was unclear when it might begin work on the case.

Maybe if he pulled his panties up and tried to act like a man someone may have an ounce of respect for this douche, but both the Rebub and the Dems need to grab this loser by the arms and toss him out the 2nd story window.

Wiener is more of a lying distraction for the morons that love eating this stupid story up while congress and senators are passing bulls and screwing over the American people.

Look at Charlie Wrangle. 17 years and cheated on taxes and he's still in office. WTF is wrong with America and the American people that sit idly by and not demand that this Wrangle and Wiener are to be tossed out and tossed behind bars for cheating the IRS and for fraudulent accusations against innocent people.

I knew Wiener was a lyer from the get-go. He refused and didn't want to bring in the FBI or any other service to see what he's been doing on his wittle Twitter account. The purv.

Toss his azz and Wrangles azz to the curb where they belong.

We know Weiner is a weiner but so is Charlie Rangel. I think you need acts of congress to throw them out. Rangel should have gone a long time ago. Can't believe he is still there putting his 2 cents in every so often. So if they can't get Rangel out I guess Weiner stays too.

He chose to lie about a personal action that he knew he did once it became public and as a public figure who has been elected based on his being forthcoming, honest, integrity in serving those who elected him, even though most of those do not possess it themselves, doesn't mean he gets to ignore that which he claimed to be and to uphold...basically he lied to protect that which he got caught doing when it would have been best to just come clean from the beginning or better yet just do that which you claimed in public that you would do "conduct yourself appropriately at all times"

However, who is perfect, none of us, but many of us do not put ourselves under such scruples then choose to ignore that we are under such scruples, and thereby when caught just outright lie about it. It makes him just stupid, arrogant, and some what selfish IMHO, and stupid is as stupid does. IMHO, he should go do something else after he's dealt with his personal issues, and try not to be stupid going forward.

His wife should be is biggest concern right now, and if he doesn't realize this, he is really, really stupid.

See, there's your mistake. You think a politician has moral fiber. It all makes sense when you come to the realization that NONE of them do. They just want to make you believe the other side doesn't.

We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation,

If every politician who lied or acted inappropriately needed to resign, Washington would be almost empty.

He didn't run on family values, so it gives him a slight edge over the others, but he will probably have to leave. It's a shame because he had real guts to stand up to the extreme right in the House.

Can anyone honestly explain to me why people expect our elected officials to NOT be human beings?

Can anyone THEN explain to me how his choices of conversation partners and topics in his personal time has the first bit of ANYTHING to do with his job?

If you don't like how he does his JOB, then complain about him. Otherwise, it's the guys personal, PRIVATE time and life. Leave him alone.

Now, in regards to him lying about it- that's jacked up... But I can't necessarily blame him, considering most people will try (and probably succeed) to crucify him for talking to people- it's none of their business.

And he was not a hypocrite about it either. He has never said he was the mouthpiece of Christ like so many others. Nor did he bash gays while secretly sucking *&$^% in the tearoom. Weiner at least had backbone when fighting the Republicans for his constituency. I would much rather have him represent me than some lame coward that just goes along with the crowd.

Again, I have no problem with the performance of his duties. The problem I have is with the immense falsification in his story. Had he not commented on it I'd be fine. I don't care about his infidelities. His marital problems are his own.

If you don't like how he does his JOB, then complain about him. Otherwise, it's the guys personal, PRIVATE time and life. Leave him alone.

As a public figure, your personal life can be a major stumbling block if you hit the news. I don't know why we shouldn't want a better class of politician.

My problem isn't the scandal itself but the way Rep. Weiner handled the aftermath. Hacking a U.S. Representative's social networking would have been a serious matter in terms of National security, the fact that Federal authorities were diverted from their legitimate business by his allegations is what pushed this past the point of no return. As in several other recent scandals involving pols of both parties, I believe Rep. Weiner should resign or be removed because of his actions.

Seems that you want the T.E.A. Party to take over the House, Senate and Presidency.

How you managed to come up with something like this when I was simply saying the guy hasn't done anything to crucify him over (aside from lying) I'll never be able to figure out, but I will tell you what I don't want- people who can manage to do what you did in office.

The only problem I have is how he dealt with it.

My only issue as well, although like I said I can somewhat see why he dealt with it how he did. Not an excuse, only slight understanding (wouldn't take the same choices in his position either.)

I don't know why we shouldn't want a better class of politician.

If you want a better class of politician, perhaps review who you are voting for in the first place? Instead of trying to vote for the 'holy roly, I don't do nothin wrong and will take all your money while stabbing you in the back and lying to you at the same time' politician (which is consistently 90% of what people vote for and elect....) why not vote for the guy who is tested, has experience, has made jackups but has proven (from numerous POSITIVE job reviews) that they do their job?

taking pics of yourself and then posting them for the whole world to see is fiendish and sick!

Wasn't he intending to send them to individuals? I haven't completely followed the story past the weekend, and I don't know anything about twitter anyway, but from what I'm understanding he was sending pictures to individuals- not posting them on billboards around major cities or anything. From what I also understand, there is one specific person who has the pictures, and apparently they have nudes.

So if he's posting these pictures for the 'whole world to see', then how is Brietbart (or whoever) claiming he won't release other pictures unless the women's information gets leaked out?

sorry, when one is an elected official, one SHOULD realize that one is held to a 'certain standard' in order to be blessed with the job.

Looks to me like the ignorant voting populace just lets whoever want the job buy it... If you honestly think voting for someone who will put up a facade standard just to impress you is intelligent, then you've got real big problems. Quit trying to hold people to 'higher standards' just because YOU FEEL they should be that way. If you want to exemplify a higher standard from a congressperson, go run for @!$%#ing office.

If you consistently set standards, you'll consistently be disappointed when people don't meet them. It's your own problems that this is an issue with you, and non-issues (such as this) will continue to distract ignorant people until the true problem is solved...

The true problem is why this guy felt he had to lie to cover his bases in the first place. He didn't commit any crimes, hasn't done anything illegal, and shouldn't even have anyone asking any questions to him at all. He is 100% as free to do the EXACT same things as I or anyone else here, and I'd be willing to bet that 98% of the people on this PAGE have done similar or worse. If people would keep their GOSSIP nose to their PERSONAL lives, and keep their BUSINESS to the BUSINESS issues, this guy wouldn't have any issues.

Now, can anyone tell me what his voting record is, etc? I really don't know anything about him. :/

Yes, because the conservative agenda is all sunshine and puppy dogs. NO lies there, why I remember when Donald Rumsfeld owned up to his work in Iraq, and I remember when President Bush went on record saying that the first many years of Iraq were incorrectly done. I believe you're correct, conservatives have always been the people who are right with their responsibilities. Why, President Nixon did the right thing and resigned after being impeached. President Reagan sold arms to Iran, a country whose government seems to like no one at all. I wonder what would happen if one of those zany progressives sold arms to Al Qaeda these days?

Seriously... It's getting tired of seeing two 'sides' consistently accuse each other of lying and not doing anything to fix the problem... NEITHER are doing a damn thing.

Well, very easy to come up with something like the other party "option".

Perhaps it's your ignorance you need to address then? Last time I checked, there were more than two parties (albeit only two in power at the moment.) Seeing things in only a two party view is quite narrow minded, and also keeps other possible better options off the table. FYI, I don't want either the republicans or the democrats to have control of any of the options. Nice try with the sarcastic attack though.

I'd suggest you (and the millions of others who only persist in the downgrade of America) to consider abandoning the traditional two party system of democrat or republican. It isn't working, neither 'party' are really truly concerned about the general public- so why are you so concerned with keeping them employed?

I'm a moderate lib. The guy bought and paid for the lumps he is going to take. As far as I'm concerned, it is between him, and those that voted for him to decide if they want him to continue to represent them, or if they want him to resign.

If he was my congressman, I wouldn't want him as my representative. Not because of what he did, (behind closed doors and between adults...) but because of how he got caught in several lies related to it and how he handled that badly. What would happen if this had been about taking bribes for a piece of crap weapons system? Now he is dealing with "My Money!" It becomes personal, and he would not be doing the work of the people.

There is more to the story. Even though he did not physically meet any of these women, he did violate his marriage vows. Innocent flirting with other women might be okay, but showing your privates is crossing the line.

The liberal press was happy to come to his defense by attacking anyone that suggested Congressmen Wiener may have acted improperly. The first priority of the liberal press is their agenda. They appear to be unconcerned about honest reporting.

As for Congressmen Wiener, a House ethics investigation should proceed and appropriate punishment met. I suspect his punishment will fall short of expulsion. As for whether Congressmen Wiener should resign, we should let his constituents decide his future in Congress.

I don't think anyone should revel in this tragedy.

I don't think he should have had to 'explain' his actions, or be placed in the situation he was where he lied about it.

he did violate his marriage vows.

Do you know what those were? Do you specifically know why his spouse and him are married, or what arrangements they have in their marriage? Do you know whether his spouse and him are swingers, or maybe they have a business marriage and their personal lives are separate?

If you don't know any of that (which the only ones who do are the congressman and his spouse) then you don't know whether he violated his marriage vows or not.

Are you his wife? Didn't think so. What does it matter to you whether he may or may not have violated his marital vows?

a House ethics investigation should proceed and appropriate punishment met.

A public censure, letter of reprimand, etc. would suffice for lying about the situation... HOWEVER, I don't feel he should have had to explain anyway- he didn't do anything illegal or wrong in the first place (legally speaking... individual moral convictions aside because YOUR moral convictions don't run the country...)

So, a censure, but ALSO something released stating that there was nothing illegal occurring in the first place, people need to mind their own business, and learn to separate personal from business.

Weiner has to go and be replaced with another politician.

Anyone having the T.E.A. cap around?

The story here is the silence of Senator Shumer, Weiner's mentor and career manager. There goes any chance at the Senate, the Mayorality of NYC, and the rest of Weiner's career. Shumer's silence is deafening and, since Weiner is a Democrat and therefore no friend of the military/industrial/energy/banking complex, finding a nice, cushy, fat-salary job post-political career might prove to be a problem. And rest assured his career is over. He's like the chicken with its head cut off, running around the henhouse. It's dead, but it just doesn't realize it yet. Too bad, as he was a decent guy with a strong moral backbone...at least when it came to public issues. Privately, though, he's a pig like so many others before him and those to follow.

How foolish and hypocritical can any group of people get? My advise to the GOP is to let the Democratic leadership tend to problem.

It's not only that he was stupid, but he lied about it. He should not be in congress. I mean - twitter? Get real. How juvenile. Ok, set aside the immorality, the fornication, the disrespect for his wife and considering himself - what? sexy? irresistable? or what? But set all that aside. The stupidity of these actions is almost unbelievable. How can anyone in pubic life post such private, personal pictures on the internet and not realize that his job, in fact his whole future is in danger? To me, this is mind boggling. He has one of the highest positions this country can offer, and he does this with the public trust like some kind of a junior high kid? How the heck did he get in congress anyway, with that mentality? Then to lie about doing it? To think he would not be found out really caps the stupidity. This is so sick.

GOP is gonna pounce all over this guy, I mean it is so easy to hit a man when he is down. If he were a Republican, exceptions would be made by GOP and they would defend him tooth and nail. The hypocrisy is evident. I mean look at Gingrich who had ethical vilations and sexual scandals of his own. He is a Republican Presidential candidate. Can you see the double standard? If you are a Dem then you should be punished but if you are a Republican, all is forgiven and lets move on.

Gingrich was screwing his secretary, whom he later married, while in office... championing the impeachment of the President for the very same violation he himself was guilty of at that very moment.

Both sides seem to only be concerned with the political ramifications of what happened. I think that the truly sad thing about this is what an elected official, whether left or right, is willing to do to his family, friends, and loyal constituents. We, the people, should be appalled because of his actions, not because it will tilt the political process one way or the other. We've become callous and numb to the amoral behavior of our leaders.

The only thing that SHOULD be of concern is the political happenings. We hired/elected this guy to do a JOB, not to live a certain LIFE. You don't like anyone telling you what you can/cannot do, who you can/cannot talk to, etc, once you get home... Why should he like it either?

I think it's truly sad when your job performance is based on your adherance to someone else's morals NOT relating to your job.

Not only does the GOP stand behind Gingrich (which, I guess, is safer than standing in front of him), they were perfectly willing to have Sen. Vitter stay on in the Senate after his prostitution scandal and that horrible media circus of having his wife stand next to him at a press conference, and the people of Louisiana (a Bible Belt state) re-elected him! So I guess the sexual sins of lawmakers don't really matter much to the voters. Ensign held out and didn't resign until something else started to come out that seemed to have something to do with payoffs!

Weiner is a total ass for doing what he did, but he also is damned good on the floor of the House. I've seen him make forceful points several times about various issues that really did need to be discussed before any legislation was passed and that were not being brought up by anyone else. Since I don't have to live with him, and certainly don't have to sleep with him, I want him to stay on because I DO have to live with the laws Congress enacts.

No, Vitter chose to humiliate his wife. Vitter was messing around with the "DC madam" and other prostitutes. Vitter also was a person creepy enough to speachify about "family values," which is the deal-changer. The GOP chose to let him go on with it. I don't trust Hannity and den't give a rat's ass who is with this moron tonight. Why is Vitter still in the Senate? Why didn't the GOP force him to resign? Why did the GOP tolerate Ensign for so long? And this is only with regard to sexual misconduct. How about misconduct in office that relates to accepting payoffs and favorites from lobbyists, industry groups, etc? That kind of misconduct is much more indicative of corruption of government and abuse of power than sexual peccadillos are. Just WHO did Cheney meet with on energy policy, and just WHY were his companions names kept secret?

Most cellphones come with cameras nowadays, and you can even buy 'mini' USB cameras at walgreens and similar for like 5 bucks. You'd be more accurate to say the non-average one is the one who doesn't have the camera...

what makes them think any woman is interested in his texts or his "stuff"?

Perhaps HER texts, or pictures of her "stuff"? It may amaze you to know this, but conversations happen daily that involve two (and yes, sometimes even more than two!) people exchanging information. Information exchange can and sometimes does include pictures, text messages, email, voice conversations, written notes, hand gestures, etc.

What makes you think he is different from any other person out there?

I think people are forgetting something. Weiner 46, has now admitted to sending a sexually provocative picture, of himself, to a college co-ed who DID NOT solicit it, request it, or expect it. When that sinks in he is more toast than he is already, and he is toast already.

I can almost guarantee the opposing party will take this as ammunition at the next election if he doesn't resign. He has no future in congress now.

He has no future in congress now.

Why not? Vitter and Rangle are still in Congress, and they actually did something ILLEGAL.

Goes to show priority- break the law while doing something immoral, and you've still got a job. Don't break the law, just do something immoral.... Well, nah man, you gotta go...

Hey, Kreepy-crawler, and which sodomizing, raping, mule loving republican did you vote for.  Stumbo who loved 5 year old boys, wonder what it feel to a 5 yr old boy to be sodomied.  How about that wonderful anti-abortionist who prefers the family mule to his wife.  Of course, Thurman, who sat in his seat on the hill years after the racist pedofile raped a 13 yr. old black girl.  Pig, speak up.  Which on is your favorite

Gophy, come on, be honest...Weiner is your favorite lefty dirtball and you're so crushed you can hardly control yourself. Take a deep breath, wipe the foam from your mouth and go dig up some more dirt on those right wing meanies. That seems to be your favorite pastime. Dude, stress kills...chill the $*#@ out!
