CHICAGO — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Thursday he'll stay in his job for the "foreseeable future," addressing speculation he might leave the Obama administration following the current round of budget negotiations.

"I live for this work. It's the only thing I've ever done. I believe in it," Geithner said when questioned about his plans by former President Bill Clinton onstage at a meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative.

"We have a lot of challenges in the country and I'm going to be doing it for the foreseeable future," he said.

Geithner, 49, acknowledged the interest in his plans, noting that he'd been commuting back and forth from New York and had a son who was going to be finishing high school there. Earlier a person familiar with his thinking told The Associated Press that Geithner saw an opening to potentially leave once a deal was reached on raising the nation's borrowing limit, but the source emphasized no decisions had been made. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

Geithner reiterated his warnings Thursday of financial chaos if the federal government's debt limit is not raised by Aug. 2. Along with other administration officials, Geithner is deep in negotiations to make it happen alongside spending cuts demanded by congressional Republicans.

Geithner has been at President Barack Obama's side since the beginning of his administration. If he did depart he would be the latest in a series of economic advisers to do so more than halfway through Obama's term, as often happens around the two-year mark of a presidency. Earlier this month the White House announced the departure of Austan Goolsbee, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Prior to joining Obama's administration, Geithner served for about five years as chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, a job that put him on the front lines of the central bank's efforts to battle the financial crisis and to get credit flowing more freely. He has a close working relationship with Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Geithner also worked at the Treasury Department during the Clinton administration, dealing with international financial crises.

His possible departure was first reported by Bloomberg News.

He needs to go, and I'm sure there is a jail cell with his name attached to it. He's a swindler/thief.

He doesn't want to be around when things start getting real ugly, economic wise.

Please, PLEASE fire this A-Hole, Barack. He's a REPUBLICAN. He always was. He's not giving you advice that anyone from your base wants to hear.

If Republicans weren't so awful, I could vote against Barack based on this dildo alone.

Timothy Geithner lied about his taxes. A tax fraud/cheat is appointed Secretary of the Treasury. This is absolutely consistent with the supposed values of this entire administration.

Rangel, former Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee, wrote tax laws for others. He obviously felt himself above the law.

The community organizer gets the land next to his house for far below market value from a consumate criminal, Antonin Rezko. Convicted of wire fraud, mail fraud, corrupt solicitation, and money laundering, Rezko is approached by the POTUS to assist him in a real estate deal:

    http://thechairman66.wordpress.com/2008/01/10/the-obama-rezko-scandal-heatens-up/

This administration is full of criminals, from the top - down. The Department of Justice, charged with enforcing the laws of our land, are now arming illegals with weapons and going after states which are trying to enforce in-place immigration laws.

    This is the "Anti-administration".

As long as he is joined at the dick with the POTUS, don't expect him to be busted over something you or I would be in a heartbeat.

If he's going to stay that must mean his forseeable future ends January 2013.

He's gonna run with a lot of the people's money in 2013. Enough time for him to start juggling the books and stashing away the cash.

This man is America's scheister, he has along with the fed managed to rob the American people like no others. Everyone involved in devising the Wall St. and bank buyouts need long prison terms...everyone. And we Americans need to never allow this shtick to happen again. Further every bank that owns forclosed homes should have to immediatly open these homes to our homeless vets as well as tornado and flood victims. Enough already.

If Geithner is a hobbit and Gollum Michele Bachmann and the Tea Party is the Nazgul (black riders).

The Grim Creeper plastic surgery, makeup, and professional help can do a lot. Besides its not the way they look that make them like the Nazgul its the way they act politically. Their only goal is to find that 'one ring', wealth and power, and nothing else not the American people or the economy matter only giving in to 'Sauron', their corporate masters. Granted its kind of juvenile to use the Lord of The Rings to make a point but it illustrates the point well.

Little Timmy Geithner the tax cheat knows Obama is going to lose his butt 2012 and that the republicns are going to force spending cuts. Little Timmy Geithner the tax cheat will hang around until he can set up a consulting business to leverage his insider knowledge and pull before exiting. He also wants to give Obama time to find the most devious Marxist operative the Democratic party has to offer.

The Marxist has to keep a few capitalists around to fund the lavish lifestyles of the ruling party elite, like Obama keeps Immelt.

Then they aren't Marxists. If someone is a "Marxist, except for..." then they aren't Marxists. And you're talking out of your #@$. You don't know anything about Marx or Marxism.

Geithner reminds me of a bank embezzler that is afraid to take a vacation because the bank examiners may show up while he is gone.

If he parts from his ultra-capitalist past I have no problem with him staying. I heard him speak many times he has some good ideas and I think he has a good personality and is a good speaker. That said he made some decisions that I was absolutely against and I'm still not so sure he has fully parted from his ultra-capitalist past.

AIG paid bonuses for job performance to its executives after receiving 170 billion dollars in taxpayer financed TARP bailout aid.

Even against public outrage Timothy Geithner defended taxpayer financed TARP bailout of AIG and its payments to the several large banks to redeem derivative contracts that AIG had insured against loss.

Timothy Geithner listed his political affiliation as Independent while demonstrating an allegiance to Wall Street Banks and Wall Street's financial district through his prior position as president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

With Geithner's and previous Treasury Secretary Larry Summers economic policy guidance is it really any wonder that Obama's economic policies are such a dismal main street economic failure while Wall Street's corporate economy is prosperous.
