NEW YORK — With three failed marriages between them, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony finally seemed to find true love together when they married seven years ago. They had twin children, went on tour together, did a movie together and even planned a music-based reality show they were working on together.

But on Friday, the pair announced they were no longer together.

"We have decided to end our marriage. This was a very difficult decision," the couple said in a statement by Lopez's publicist. "We have come to amicable conclusion on all matters. It is a painful time for all involved and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time."

It was a surprising split for one of Hollywood's most high-profile couples. They seemed inseparable: Lopez even danced in the background for her crooner husband when he performed on "American Idol," where she debuted as a judge this past season.

The pair, both of Puerto Rican heritage, married in 2004 after years of knowing each other. He was ending a marriage to former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, while she had recently endured a high-profile breakup with Ben Affleck.

Lopez had been married twice before in brief unions to Ojani Noa and Chris Judd and had a famous romance with Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Her union with Anthony was her most enduring public relationship. The pair did a joint tour together and starred in the movie "El Cantante" in 2006.

They also had two children, twins Emme and Max. They were Lopez's first children; Anthony had a child from Torres and another from a previous relationship.

In April, the pair, both 42, announced plans for a television show together, "Q'Viva! The Chosen," with Simon Fuller, the creator of "Idol." The show was to feature the superstar couple as they traveled the world to find the best performers in Latin music, dance and other arts with the goal of creating a live extravaganza.

The show had no airdate, and it's unclear if it will continue.

Lopez released her latest album, titled "Love?" this year. Her career, which lulled in recent years, has surged since she became an "Idol" judge.

Those two always seemed liked they marched straight in the house and started War of the Roses type battles. I'm sad for them that they put up with that hell for 7 years. I know what that's like being married for all the wrong reasons, wasting the best years of your life. It's a prison for so many, mostly because they can't afford the blood money that it costs for freedom.. Not sure why these two didn't bail sooner though....

But, wouldn't you just love to tongue punch that fart box on her though? ;-)

Oh but they seemed so happy together (sarc)....I think she tries too hard, I kinda saw that with Ben Affleck when they got interviewed at their home....welcome to my world J-LO and Marc Anthony....relationships suck!

i think it was just a matter of time. i mean hes out doing his thing and shes a demanding "diva" doing her thing. but theyre celebs, they go through relationships and marriages like stinky underwears since money is never the issue to get a lawyer or whatever they might need to get a divorce or breakup....

      I for one,knew it was coming...He'd only been married once before, she twice and a long engagement to Affleck...that only happens when you can't make decisions about the kind of person you want to be with and pick the wrong one to enter into a commitment too...

        Well I guess they milked each other for all the P/R there was to get and now it is time divorce for some more publicity. Since when did a Hollywood marriage really count anyway? I know America has what, a 60% divorce rate but Hollywod's must be in the 80 percentile range. I seriously doubt many of those so-called marriages are anything more than convenience or enabling exercises for both parties involved. No tears here.

          I never did see them together, but I am glad that they at least had 7 years together and two beautiful children. Is it just me? Or does he dress like Jimmiene Cricket? She was always so stylish and he wore these horrible little suits with satin trim...even his casual clothes were on the tacky side.

          Both talented but I am surprised they lasted this long being that she appears to be the more famous of the two.
