LOS ANGELES — George Lopez, who surrendered his TBS time slot to Conan O'Brien and then saw ratings for "Lopez Tonight" slide, got a cancelation notice Wednesday. Lopez's Thursday show at midnight will be the final one, the cable network said in a statement.

"TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of `Lopez Tonight,'" the network said, adding that it was proud to have worked with the "immensely talented comedian and entertainer."

TBS declined further comment. The decision was based not only on ratings but also the cost of the show, according to a person familiar with the production, who spoke on condition of anonymity because TBS hadn't authorized public comment.

A call to Lopez's representatives was not immediately returned.

The comic gave up his 11 p.m. ET time slot to make room for O'Brien, who joined TBS after leaving NBC's "Tonight" over a time-slot dispute that ended up reinstating Jay Leno as "Tonight" host.

The plan for TBS was to have a one-two punch of late-night shows that would particularly appeal to young viewers, but the results have been unimpressive and the cancelation unsurprising, said media analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media.

"The only positive was a young median age" of about 32, Adgate said, which is part of the younger adult audience favored by advertisers.

Lopez was among the rare minority entertainers to get a shot at a late-night show, with Arsenio Hall and Wanda Sykes also in the group. Late-night hosts are uniformly white and male, including O'Brien, Leno, David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel.

Neither Lopez nor O'Brien has been covered in ratings glory since TBS made its bold move to snare the former broadcast network star.

Lopez's total viewership dropped 40 percent in its second year, from an average of 910,000 nightly viewers at 11 p.m. ET to 543,000 at midnight. In August, the audience has dropped to 391,000.

"Conan" has been drawing slightly more than 1 million viewers for the season, just 13 percent higher than Lopez did in his first year, Adgate said, citing Nielsen Co. figures.

For the first part of August, "Conan" is averaging 709,000 nightly viewers. During its debut month, November 2010, O'Brien's show had about 2 million nightly viewers.

In comparison, "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" is getting nearly 1.3 million viewers for Comedy Central at 11 p.m. ET, with "The Colbert Show" following it up at 11:30 ET with an average 982,000 viewers.

Little Sure Shot

I don't know about his stand up ability as I have never seen him perform. But his TV show was a hoot. Oh BTW, I'm not Latino.

Yes, not being funny must be a Latin thing..George Lopez, Carlos Mencia, Paul Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias...they're all terrible.

So let me see, Lopez gives up his great slot and then get thrown to the wolves. Oh, they kept the white man. Wow. Only in America

They kept CONAN O'BRIEN and got rid of GEORGE LOPEZ. In what parallel universe do you exist where you don't like that choice. And don't make this racial when it isn't. Of course Conan O'Brien would be picked over George Lopez, not only in America, but anywhere where the spirit of actual comedy is still alive.

And this doesn't even take into account the viewer numbers....Conan gets more viewers because he is better and makes them more money. Why would they keep George Lopez if he isn't as successful?

So what about your race comments on this topic. You riled against Hispanics and then have the nerve to tell someone to not make it about race. Wow, some hypocrite.

The funny thing is that George Lopez's old sitcom on Nickelodeon gets more viewers than Conan every night. So Mr. Lopez has as much money and fame as Conan but it still was so nice of Lopez to let Coana have his time slot. Wow

          My Thought 2

In continuing with what PixelatedUniverse said, Conan had a following of viewers that want(ed) him to have a talk-show back; Lopez didn't.

Based upon the figures represented in the article, Lopez drew in "an average of 910,000 viewers" at the 11:00 slot. Conan "is drawing slightly more than 1 million viewers" in the same slot. ....with only looking at these figures tell me who is being more profitable to TBS?

The article also shows that Lopez's numbers have dropped from 543,000 viewers to 391,000 at the midnight slot. Again, by looking at the numbers it appears to me that he isn't able to sustain the viewers within his own time slot. A quick search online showed that Conan was pulling in 1.98 million viewers during his "Late Night" show; which makes me think that Conan has the capability of carrying the show (and making it more profitable) for TBS than Lopez does.

Lifeisgood - I wouldn't argue you with you on Lopez still getting high numbers on his tv shows that air on Nickelodeon, but if he did better at doing sitcoms than maybe he should return to what he is good at doing.

I don't see this as a slap in the face to Lopez. He was offered a chance to make it work and it didn't. Many people try new things and don't succeed.

You cannot assume that because I mentioned four Latin comedians that I was making a racial comment. I was merely bringing up similar "comedians". You imagined up some dots and connected them to bring you to the conclusion that I am racist because I don't enjoy bad comedy. Seriously "riled the Hispanics"? You're weird.

Only in America, would a minority scream "RACISM!!" because an unfunny latino's show was cancelled.

You compare him to Conan. Remember Team COCO and all of the people who joined together to keep Conan on the air? Where was the 'Save LOPEZ' crowd?

MAYBE HE REALLY WAS NOT FUNNY. I think you are the racist.

Yes, children find him funny, children are not yet fully capable of understanding real comedy. Children laugh at funny faces and noises. This is TBS not Nick we're talking about. Spongebob and Patrick tell better jokes than Lopez.

The funny thing is that George Lopez's old sitcom on Nickelodeon gets more viewers than Conan every night.

Then he should move his talk show to nick... or a better solution might be to wait another 20 years before starting his talk show. By then all his "fans" watching nick right now will be in the target demographic TBS is going after with lopez's talk show.

Honestly though, being a good actor or comedian does not make you a good talk show host in and of itself. It's painful to watch Jimmy Fallon. The host needs to have a charisma and an ability to think quick on his feet. It's not the monologue that sells the show, its the interaction between the host and the guests. If the host doesn't do a good job of relating to guests and getting them to open up...then the ratings fall.

It's not brain surgery people. And its not racially motivated. If you don't get the views/ratings, you don't get advertising money. No ad money, no show. They specifically mention the high cost of producing the show in the article I'm sure they approached Lopez and suggested cutting the budget for the show as an alternative. If Lopez said no, then they have to drop the show.
