NEW YORK — Herbie Hancock and Aretha Franklin will take part in the celebration of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz's 25th anniversary.

A concert and a competition are the highlights of the two-day event in Washington on Sept. 11-12.

Hancock will be among the judges for the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, it was announced Thursday. The winner will receive a recording contract with Concord Music Group and a scholarship.

Franklin, who sang jazz early in her career at Columbia Records, is being honored with the Institute Founder's Award.

Monk was a jazz pianist and composer and considered one of the most important figures in the genre. The institute was founded in his memory and is dedicated to jazz education.

The most eccentric, innovative, and creative pianist in jazz music history. Creatively he was in a class by himself. "Round Midnight" is one of the most played jazz songs of all time. "Straight, no Chaser" is one of my personal favorites. It's fitting Herbie Hancock will be performing. Aretha "the queen" Franklin has proved she can sing any genre of music. I wish I could be there.
