HARARE — Angolan authorities have barred activists from entering the country ahead of a regional summit taking place there next week.
An alliance of civil society groups known as the Regional Apex organization said in a statement Saturday that Angolan authorities had denied them entry upon arrival at the Luanda airport.
The leaders of various regional religious, labor and human rights organizations also say their bookings had been canceled.
The activists had planned to hold meetings alongside the annual Southern African Development Community summit that opens Tuesday. Angola takes over the annual chairmanship from South Africa.
Angola is a virtual one-party state where President Eduardo dos Santos has been in power for more than 30 years.
