FAYETTEVILLE — Ronnie Wingo rushed for a career-high 109 yards and scored three touchdowns, leading No. 14 Arkansas to a 38-28 victory over Troy on Saturday night.
Wingo had touchdown runs of 22 and 21 yards and also caught a 6-yard TD pass for the Razorbacks (3-0), who were outgained by the Trojans 457-454 in total offense.
Tyler Wilson remained perfect as the starting quarterback for Arkansas, which travels to No. 2 Alabama next week. Wilson finished 23 of 36 passing for 303 yards, and Joe Adams had eight catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Arkansas led 31-7 early in the third quarter before the Trojans (0-2) scored back-to-back touchdowns. Troy quarterback Corey Robinson found Justin Albert for 32 yards for the first score, and safety LaDarrius Madden scored the second on a 53-yard interception return.
Robinson finished 36 of 63 passing for 373 yards.
The Razorbacks responded early in the fourth quarter when Wilson connected with Adams for a 56-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 38-21. Adams turned a short pass into the big score by spinning through two Troy defenders before sprinting to the end zone.
Tramain Thomas then intercepted a Robinson pass on the first play following Adams' touchdown, and Arkansas' defense didn't allow another score until Robinson found Eric Thomas for a 24-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left in the game.
Wingo's previous career high was an 86-yard performance against Texas A&M as a freshman in 2009. He bested that mark with a 7-yard carry early in the third quarter, later capping the Razorbacks' opening drive of the second half with his touchdown reception.
Wingo's three scores also set a career best. His previous high was a two-touchdown effort, one rushing and one receiving, against Troy in 2009.
Arkansas played without starting defensive end Jake Bequette (hamstring), and receivers Jarius Wright (knee) and Greg Childs, whose grandmother passed away earlier in the week.
Adams, who returned two punts for touchdowns in the season opener, stepped right in as the Razorbacks' top receiving option without Wright and Childs. He had plenty of help from junior receiver Cobi Hamilton, who opened the game with a 37-yard reception and finished with five catches for 81 yards.
Wilson was effective in guiding Arkansas' offense early, leading the Razorbacks to touchdowns on their first three drives.
However, after he sailed a pass high over the head of Javontee Herndon on third-and-goal from the 5 on Arkansas' fourth possession, Wilson felt the wrath of coach Bobby Petrino on the sideline. Zach Hocker made the 23-yard field goal to put Arkansas up 24-0, but only after Petrino slammed his headset into the ground and mocked Wilson's throwing motion on the sideline.
Wilson did guide Arkansas to two scoring drives in the second half, but Troy also held the Razorbacks to three three-and-outs.
