TUNIS — A lawyer for Libya's ex-prime minister says his client has gone on a hunger strike in a Tunisian jail to protest authorities refusal to free him even though his conviction for entering this country illegally was overturned.
The Justice Ministry spokesman said Thursday that al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi was wanted by Libyan authorities.
Spokesman Kadhem Zine El Abidine said an arrest warrant was issued for him Tuesday — the same day an appeals court overturned his conviction for illegally entering Libya.
Al-Mahmoudi can be held for up to 30 days while authorities await official Libyan documents demanding his extradition.
Lawyer Mabrouk Korchid denounced the "arbitrary detention" of his 67-year-old client, saying he has numerous ailments, and said he fears for his life if extradited.
