— Leonard Nimoy has attended his final "Star Trek" convention.

The 80-year-old actor, best-known for playing Mr. Spock in the original TV series that began in September 1966, formed four fingers into a V for Vulcan sign and intoned to fans Spock's most famous phrase: "Live long and prosper."

Nimoy has said the convention in suburban Chicago celebrating the 45th anniversary of "Star Trek" would be his last.

He spoke for an hour about his life and career, and thanked fans for their support over the years. Some held signs saying: "We love you Leonard! Live long & prosper."

Creation Entertainment organizes the "Star Trek" conventions. Company CEO Adam Malin says the company has toured and collaborated with Nimoy for nearly three decades and that Nimoy "will be missed."

I thought Vulcans lived to 150-200 years. Mr. Spock/Nimoy has plenty of good trekkin' years left.

Still, I can understand wanting to hang up your ears at some point.

He'll always be my favorite Star Trek character.

I don't care how old he is, as long as he is breathing, I'll want to hear about him, and know how he is. He is a great man, and his public presence will be missed!

The character "Mr. Spock" and his long career showing both logic and compassion was exactly the right example for many people who needed just that kind of example.

The concept, the character, the man, are - indeed! - larger than life.

Very well said!

In so many ways, he represented what is good about humankind.

That is sad... He is one of only two original series main characters I never had the chance to meet, and I always hoped that someday I would have the chance to meet him... :(

You will be missed Leonard Nimoy...

No way, I have done something you haven't? ;-)

He started in our community theater's production of Fiddler on The Roof back in the mid-70's and stayed at my sister's best friends house while in town.

Being all the women (girls & mom) were mega-Star Trek fans, we were introduced to him and he gave us free tickets for a performance. He did a great Tevye!!

Wow... that is awesome! That is certainly an experience to treasure...

The other actor I never had a chance to meet was DeForest Kelley. I understand he and his wife were really great people to meet. He was the first one of the main cast members to leave us...

I know DeForest left too soon, so did James...I can't believe that Shatner & Leonard are 80! Egads, makes me feel old!

I know what you mean...it makes me feel old too. I got the see Jimmy Doohan twice, once at a convention by himself and once at a convention where he was also with Nichols, Takei, and Koenig. The second time he had really aged a lot and didn't have the "life" to him as he did the first time. They were about 3 years apart.

The article says he spoke for about an hour at the convention. Wouldn't it be great to read the transcript of his speech? Is there any way we could see or hear it?

Thanks, Mr. Nimoy, for being the guy who brought us Spock.

I looked, with no success, for a transcript too. :(

Here's another article about his last appearance.

An interesting page about Leonard Nimoy in general.
