WASHINGTON — Dorothy Rodham, mother of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton's mother-in-law, died Tuesday at age 92 after an illness.

The family said Rodham died shortly after midnight, surrounded by her family at a Washington hospital. The secretary of state had cancelled a planned trip to London and Istanbul to be at her mother's side.

In a statement, the Clinton family hailed Rodham as a woman who "overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was — a warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother."

President Barack Obama praised Rodham as a "remarkable person" who also was "strong, determined and gifted."

"For her to have been able to live the life that she did and to see her daughter succeed at the pinnacle of public service in this country I'm sure was deeply satisfying to her," Obama said after signing an executive order in the Oval Office. "My thoughts, Michelle's thoughts, the entire White House's thoughts go out to the entire Clinton family. I know that she will be remembered as somebody who helped make a difference in this country and this world."

Dorothy Rodham was a witness to her daughter's political victories and defeats. She avoided the spotlight and rarely gave interviews about herself or her daughter and son-in-law, the former president.

A notable exception was her daughter's 2008 bid for the Democratic nomination for president. She appeared with her daughter in primary states, particularly at events focusing on women's issues.

Clinton cited her mother in at least one ad during the campaign, saying that her mother had taught her to stand up for herself and to stand up for those who needed help.

As Clinton battled Barack Obama for the nomination in April 2008, Rodham joined her daughter and granddaughter at a campaign event at Haverford College, Pa. Then 88, Rodham didn't speak at the event, but Hillary Clinton noted that her mother lived with her and "always has a lot of great ideas about what we need to be doing," drawing chuckles from the audience.

When Clinton ended her campaign during a speech in June 2008 at Washington's National Building Museum, her mother watched from off stage and wiped a tear as Clinton conceded the nomination to Obama. The following February, Rodham was on hand as her daughter was sworn in as Obama's secretary of state.

Dorothy Howell Rodham was born in Chicago in 1919, the daughter of a city firefighter. In her autobiography, "Living History," Hillary Clinton described her mother's childhood as lonely and loveless.

The Howells shuttled Dorothy and her younger sister, Isabelle, among relatives and schools. She was 8 when her parents divorced in 1927 and she was sent with her sister to live with their paternal grandparents in Alhambra, Calif. Her grandmother could be cruel when not ignoring young Dorothy, Clinton wrote.

Rodham left her grandparents' home at 14 when she found room and board as a mother's helper to another family. After graduating from high school, she returned to Chicago on her mother's promise of helping to pay for a college education if she lived with her and her new husband. After that promise was unfulfilled, Rodham supported herself with a job in an office.

"I'm still amazed at how my mother emerged from her lonely early life as such an affectionate and levelheaded woman," Clinton wrote.

She met Hugh E. Rodham, a native of Scranton, Pa., who had found work in Chicago as a traveling salesman. They courted for several years before marrying in 1942. Besides their daughter, they raised two sons, Hugh and Tony.

Dorothy Rodham was a homemaker in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge but for years took a variety of college courses even though she never completed a degree. A Democrat, she was a counter to the conservative Republicanism of her husband, who became a successful businessman.

The Rodhams moved to Little Rock, Ark., in 1987, to be near their daughter and her husband, then the state's governor, and their granddaughter, Chelsea. Dorothy Rodham's husband died in 1993. A Washington Post profile in 2007 noted that she moved to Washington to live with her daughter's family after Hillary Clinton's election to the Senate in 2000.

In a debate during the 2008 campaign, Hillary Clinton called her mother her inspiration.

"I owe it to my mother, who never got a chance to go to college, who had a very difficult childhood, but who gave me a belief that I could do whatever I set my mind," she said.

The Clinton family plans a private memorial service. The family statement said any donations should be made to George Washington Hospital, where Rodham "received excellent care and made terrific friends over many years"; or to the Heifer Project ( http://www.heifer.org/), her Christmas gift of choice in 2010.

Or, the statement said "to a local organization that helps neglected and mistreated children, a blight Dorothy was determined to remedy until her last day because she knew too well the pain too many children suffer."

My condolences to the entire Clinton family, I'm sure that Dorothy Rodham was a good mother and mother-in-law. May the Lord give them comfort in this time of need, God bless the Clintons.

pjw-relax, she lived to be 92. She lived long enough to know that life ends. I am sure she or anyone else wasn't surprised by her death. We can celebrate someones life without feeling bad about their deaths. Humor isn't exactly uncalled for or tacky, its the way some people (me) deal with death. Plus, she was 92, holy @!$%# thats old.

fernando- you have more class than the comment you made ..The first one..The second comme nt shows that...Yes many folks make awkward seemingly thought to be humerous or crass verbalizations in the aftermath of tragedy, death and other instances that may often take someone aback..But whats that saying....If you dont have something nice to say dont say it at all...We should all try to adhere to that a little better even in the midst of grief etc....Im sure Mrs Rodham feels your pain ...She was the mother in law of President Clinton who feels our pain as he once said...

That still doesn't excuse tacky. There was no humor in your comment and, if you think there was, I am truly sorry for you. Oh, and I'm not the only one who called you on this. See Jim44's comment.

My mother lived to be 96--I still would not have wished her gone any sooner than she died. Yes, there was humor after her death, there still is--she was a funny lady--and some of it was pretty 'black'. Oh, yes, and at 66, I am old enough to know that life ends. Enough said.

pjw- obviously, my sense of humor is not to your liking, no problem, stop reading, I am about to type something you will find offensive.

Thank god she lived to see her daughters husband cheat on her and her daughter stay with him like it never happened. I am sure she loved that time in her life. If anyone at the age of 92 feels like they haven't accomplished everything they should of, too bad for them. If the children of a 92 year old woman don't know what they will do without her, too bad for them.

      All politics aside...

It's never an easy thing - and there are seemingly no words to bring comfort. It's been said that "While they most likely won't remember what you said - they'll remember that you were there."

Kindest regards to Mrs. Clinton and her family, and hopefully she knows that 'we are there'.

I read everything. Your comments are very insensitive. You have lack of respect for the elderly. A lot of things have changed since my grandmother's time. The problem of social security is that people are living longer. The average life expectancy is about 75 years old, due to improvements in medical technology. The baby-boomer generation, and the generation that followed them paid into the Social Security System, and are entitled by law for the benefits, because they are retired. Now when a person lived into their 80's, and 90's. That was treated with much respect, because it was not that common that a person is allowed to see their great-grandchildren before they die. You usually see your grandchildren. Now that we have a record number of elderly living longer--the current system was not adjusted to handled the change. This is due to the short-sightedness of Congress. Now if you had educated yourself about social issues that are occurring in this Country--you would have known this. Now fernando-2143457, I am sure that you would not appreciate it if someone were to tell you that your aging relative had lived too long, and that they need to die, and leave enough social security for the rest of us? Now--I have read many a comment on hot topic stories, and in the exercising of the "free-speech" there are many insensitive comments, blatant insults, and racists comments. There were comments collapsed by others I did not find offensive. However--they were collapsed since you had some community members, who had appointed themselves the "morality police" on these discussion boards. There was a few that I disputed, because they did not relate to the issue at hand, but no one collapsed those comments. This is an example of how funny the world is. However--when you post your comments on a public forum, you must take a moment to take into consideration of how it will be perceived by "general audience". I am not perfect either, and I am not sure if any of mine were collapsed. But, I must also make you aware--depending on the given circumstance. You can be sued for "defamation of character" by either the person in the article, or a family member, especially if your remarks standout, and if it is picked up by the "mainstream press", you are dead in the water. I have followed many a story about that happening to people on Facebook, and Twitter. Especially Twitter. Now these individuals were "exercising their free-speech". However--with all this "political correctness" going on. There has been a double-standard on the First Amendment rights. Even though we are all identified by our computer names like: fernando-2143457. There is a real face behind the name. This computer name is tied to an account, and can be traced back to the real you. The Press will do that--especially if you are made the villain. The biased Press is good for creating villains, and you will become the target of everybody's hatred. Even people that you did not know existed. Now--I am not attacking you on this board, but I felt compelled to express this out of concern. I might have unknowingly offended you by writing all this...perhaps not. Take this as words of wisdom from someone, who has been hated for far less than the comments on this board.

Sorry Thor that you wasted time and energy responding to me on here. Trust me, it was wasted. I don't take the death of Dorothy Rodham serious because until today, I didn't know she was alive and probably many of us on here didn't know either. I find it amazing though that the first thing that I see when I open the Political section of this site is this article. Especially since I am attempting to educate myself about social and econimic woes of our great nation and Dorothy Rodhams death is Top News. Its a little dissapointing. The whole defemation of character thing you might wanna direct at the people who called me tacky and without class, thats defemation, not what I did.

        R.I.P. Dorothy Rodham.

Whatever political disagreements I have had and will likely continue to have with the Clintons, I am sorry for their loss and can absolutely sympathize, I lost my own mother 11 years ago, and there is very little humor I find in that loss (other than my surprisingly humored dark brother pointing out that the funeral home attendant looked like a Charles Addams character).

One of the absolute lowest of many low points for the afternoon radio blowhard was when he continued business as usual against then President Clinton when he lost his mother (my own mother was ailing at the time so I had plenty of empathy and sympathy for Mr. Clinton) and couldn't take a break for ONE DAY to focus on other targets. Family values?? Not exactly.

thank you xray ... that was very respectful.

I lost my Gran last March. She was 94 and a spitfire. My best friend and I took care of her the last 10 years of her life 24/7 . ( she did very well taking care of herself before that ! even climbed the apple tree in the back to trim it , against my yellings , when she was 86 !)She raised me , was literally my best friend. We called each other 'sister'.lol.

No matter how old one is , or how ill , even when you know it's coming ( I lost my brother to cancer when he was 36 ) your never really ready to let go and no matter their age , it hurts.

I admire Hilary Clinton and now I know where she got her strength and determination.

My condolences to the Rodham family. It sounds like her mother was a wonderful person.

I own and read Living History, but I had forgotten the chapter or chapters devoted to Mrs. Rodham. So, it is nice to be reminded about this remarkable woman's life and her contribution to humanity. Her life should be an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace dear lady.
