DUBLIN — A brother of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has been sent to jail in Northern Ireland after he was arraigned on 18 charges of raping and indecently assaulting one of his daughters.
Belfast judge Fiona Bagnell refused Liam Adams' bail application Thursday citing his previous track record. The 56-year-old fled Belfast after police charged him in 2008 with repeatedly abusing his daughter Aine when she was aged 4 to 10.
Adams had been fighting extradition from Dublin since facing a European arrest warrant in March 2010. Republic of Ireland police handed him over to Northern Ireland police at the border Wednesday night.
His alleged victim says Sinn Fein pressured her for two decades not to file charges. The Irish nationalist party denies this. Adams denies the charges.
