ATLANTA — In a Nov. 28 story about state exemptions from required school vaccinations, The Associated Press, relying on information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, incorrectly reported Minnesota's 2010-11 exemption rate was 6.5 percent. The CDC based the figure on data provided by Minnesota. But Minnesota health officials say there was a math error and the correct exemption rate for 2010-11 was 1.7 percent. The CDC said it is correcting the number in its database but continuing to review the data.

This schedule may vary depending upon where you live, your child's health, the type of vaccine, and the vaccines available. Some of the vaccines may be given as part of a combination vaccine so that your child gets fewer shots. Ask your doctor which vaccines your child should receive.

Birth

  • Hep B: Hepatitis B vaccine (HBV); recommended to give the first dose at birth, but may be given at any age for those not previously immunized.

1-2 months

  • Hep B: Second dose should be administered 1 to 2 months after the first dose.

2 months

  • DTaP: Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine
  • Hib: Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine
  • IPV: Inactivated poliovirus vaccine
  • PCV: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine
  • Rota: Rotavirus vaccine

4 months

  • DTaP
  • Hib
  • IPV
  • PCV
  • Rota

6 months

  • DTaP
  • Hib
  • PCV
  • Rota

6 months and annually

  • Seasonal influenza. The vaccine is recommended every year for children older than 6 months. Kids under 9 who get a flu vaccine for the first time will receive it in two separate doses a month apart.

Although children 6 months to 5 years old are still considered the group of kids who need the flu vaccine the most, updated guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommend that all older kids and teens get it, too.

It's especially important for high-risk kids to be vaccinated. High-risk groups include, but aren't limited to, kids with asthma, heart problems, sickle cell anemia, diabetes, or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

It can take up to 2 weeks after the shot is given for the body to build up immunity against the flu.

6-18 months

  • Hep B
  • IPV

12-15 months

  • Hib
  • MMR: Measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles) vaccine
  • PCV
  • Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine

12-23 months

  • Hep A: Hepatitis A vaccine; given as two shots at least 6 months apart

15-18 months

  • DTaP

4-6 years

  • DTaP
  • MMR
  • IPV
  • Varicella

11-12 years

  • HPV: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, given as 3 shots over 6 months. It's recommended for girls to prevent genital warts and cervical cancers. The vaccine also may be given to boys to prevent genital warts.
  • Tdap: Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis booster
  • MCV: Meningitis vaccine; with a booster dose at age 16

College entrants

  • MCV: Meningitis vaccine; recommended for previously unvaccinated college entrants who will live in dormitories. One dose will suffice for healthy college students whose only risk factor is dormitory living.

Special circumstances

  • Meningitis vaccine also should be given to 13- to 18-year-olds who have not yet been vaccinated. Kids who were given their first dose between 13 and 15 years of age should receive a booster dose at 16 to 18 years of age. Children between the ages of 2 and 10 who have certain chronic illnesses will also need this vaccine, with a booster shot a few years later, depending on the age at which the first dose was given.
  • Pneumococcal vaccines may be administered to children with immunocompromising conditions, such as asplenia or HIV infection, or other medical conditions, such as cochlear implant

My Note: Approximately 1.5 million people in the US have Hepatitus B early immunization reduces risk of getting the virus. When the risk can come from other children whose parents are drug user's, you'd think that parents wouldn't want to risk their children getting infected.

If a child dies as a result of not having received one or more of these vaccines, can the parents be held liable?

They should be. Flu shots should be skipped if you don't like shots not ones that could save your child's life. Don't want the HPV vaccine to make your child "mentally retarded"? Hope ovarian cancer is easier.

It would depend on the state and the DA. If they knowingly didn't have vaccinations and knew the child would be in a situation were the child would contract a disease when a vaccine was available for the disease And the child came to harm or died, then probably. Otherwise, probably not. I'd think it would be very difficult to prove they knew the child would contract the disease. :(

Well given the fact that something like 75% of sexually active people now have HPV and that it doesn't always show symptoms yet can still increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer than I think the shot should be mandatory. Hey I get it you have a little girl and don't want to have to think that far ahead to think about her possibly picking up an STD in her teens or later in life but why would that DETER you from getting her the vaccine. Get the vaccine and that will be the last time you ever have to think about HPV...ever.

Boys can have the vaccine too.

A recent comment from Dr. Nancy Snyderman on NBC Today Show was irresponsible. First; her agreeing with the host that vaccines are proven safe is not true. There are NO long term safety studies proving safety or efficacy of vaccines. Second; there is no such thing as "herd health". The real reason anyone gets sick is their individual susceptibility to disease. That is why some people get sick and others don't. Third; her scare tactic that if your child is not vaccinated, she can cause others in your household to catch a disease is rediculous. Fourth; childhood disease was nearly eradicated in the early 20th century BEFORE vaccines were invented. It was because of clean drinking water, soap, better nutrition and better sewage control. NOT VACCINES! On that point, again Dr. Snyderman is wrong. The Nuremberg Code is still accepted by all the original signing nations, including America. Mass vaccination programs are in violation of this code. Has any parent really received true informed consent? The CDC pamphlet is NOT informed consent. Dr. Snyderman is promoting the worst form of totalitarianism, right here in USA. Lastly; I urge all parents to research the vaccination issue. Vaccines do not, in any way, resemble the natural disease that children are susceptible. It is a very toxic, potent, brew injected right into your precious child's blood stream. Remember, the CDC is a private corporation and for profit. Peace be with God.

If you'd lived in a household with 7 other siblings, you'd know about 'catching an illness from them' then step up and place that in a school setting. And just how easy would it be for a rogue scientist to spread a polio virus in a population that wasn't immunizied? See China and Pakistan recent polio outbreak.

There are no 'easy' answers but throwing the baby out with the bathwater so to speak can be as deadly.

Hello, I am one of the ones that has had a reaction, my sister also has had a reaction. You can't make us disappear. We are here and this did happen to us.

"Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master"

              George Washington

"Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither and will obtain neither"

              Benjamin Franklin

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not of your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."

              Samuel Adams

I know why some of you are lashing out at people who opt out. You want to protect the ones you love with the best ability and knowledge that you have. The only problem is: if you take away someone elses rights, you are taking away your own rights. It would open the flood gates for setting aside your rights to how your child receives medical care. The government, healthcare and insurance will then assume that roll. They will tell you how, when, and where. If something like this was to be passed into law you would have forfeited your rights to your children's health. They try to find away to divide us, alienate and demonize a group of people to pass laws that are against the constitution.
