RICHMOND — Two Virginia governors clashed in their first debate of the 2012 U.S. Senate race over showing respect for President Barack Obama.

Republican George Allen, a former governor who served a term in the Senate before he was unseated in 2006, chided Democrat Tim Kaine for heading the Democratic National Committee in his last year as governor. Allen said Kaine advocated "for the likes of not only President Obama's policies but also those of Nancy Pelosi."

Kaine interrupted, "The likes of President Obama?" He said Allen's reference showed a lack of respect for the Democratic president.

Allen asked Kaine whether he had in fact advocated for Obama's policies, which he argued have hurt Virginia. Kaine said he didn't see how wiping out al-Qaida, stopping the Iraq war and saving the auto industry weren't in Virginia's interests.

Kaine and Allen face primary opponents but are heavily favored.

I'm sure the American people are tired of the Republicans nastiness and vitriol . Very sick of it and it's used as soundbites so they don't have to talk about facts and were they want to take the country because they don't have a vision for this country.

I agree that our leaders should be shown a degree of respect, but Kaine should know that Obama himself has many times been disrespectful of President Bush. You can't have it both ways.

"for the likes of not only President Obama's policies but also those of Nancy Pelosi."

Thank you, Governor Kaine.

JK: Name a specific instance or shut up. Obama has been way too nice to the treasonous Bush and Cheney. They committed treason and should be prosecuted. They've had too nice of treatment when they're war criminals amongst transgressions. I don't need to name them. They're in the public records.

I have personally met both Kaine and Allen and I think highly of both. I hope they behave like gentlemen and keep this campaign civil.

JK, apparently I am as unaware as Gov. Kaine of President Obama being disrepectful of Bush, do you have some instance you can refer me to to back up your accusation?

Izzybar - For starters, Obama used his Inaugural Address to refer to Bush's presidency using words such as greedy, irresponsible, and childish. That sounds much more disrespectful than Allen's use of the term "likes of President Obama's policies" in a political debate.

Interesting, JK. I don't consider these characterizations disrespectful. That is a perfectly legitimate analysis of the Bush presidency. Bush's presidency has been an abject disaster. Can you dispute that?

Izzybar - honey no one asked for your opinion of the Bush presidency. We were discussing politicians being respectful of the President, in response to Gov. Kaine's comment.

Don't patronize me. You know what you can do with that "honey", right? You don't like my opinion too bad! You've got anyway. President Obama referring to "Bush's presidency using words such as greedy, irresponsible, and childish" was being kind. It is not disrespectful, it's factual! You can't refute my comment don't bitch at me. Go play with the other troll lurcking in this thread.

Allen has moved much further to the right extreme than he used to be.

I remember as Governor, Kane signed the $3,000 "Albo fee" speeding ticket law. which was repealed before it was used, after great outcry from the citizens of Virginia. That is why I distrust Kaine.

My mind is not yet made up on which one. Both have good and bad.
