Alec Baldwin apologizes to himself on 'SNL'

Baldwin says he was kicked off a plane at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday, Dec 6, 2011 after having words with a flight attendant over an "addicting" word game he was playing on his cellphone. NEW YORK — Posing as the airline pilot of the flight he was kicked off of, Alec Baldwin apologized to himself on "Saturday Night Live."

The actor appeared on the sketch program's "Weekend Update" on Saturday night to lampoon Tuesday's incident, in which he was kicked off an American Airlines flight for refusing to stop playing a mobile phone game before takeoff.

As a Southern, mustachioed airline pilot, Baldwin issued an apology for the incident. The joke, though, was how obvious the ploy was.

The actor referred to himself as an "American treasure" who was playing "a word game for smart people."

"Weekend Update" host Seth Meyers repeatedly questioned the thinly veiled performance, asking Baldwin, "Are you sure this is the right way to handle this?"

Alec Balwin has become very smug and smarmy. He felt that he was oh so important that everyone would be happy to wait until he is ready. I did not see SNL. I do not waych 30 Rock. But...if his commercials are indicative of his behavior then he is smug and smarmy.

alec baldwin can go sit in a corner with charlie sheen. great guys as long as everything goes their way. but don't you dare tell them they have to follow rules and laws like everyone else.

there are alot more "stars" who believe they are above the law and in many cases the law has allowed them to feel that they deserve to feel privileged. how many times have we seen the courts made decisions like they had early on with lindsey and paris that they are just too pretty to go to jail and let loose with community service "which they don't feel they have to perform" instead of the jail time others receive.

these "stars" do not deserve any more privilege than the rest of us. poking fun at the situation really only makes it worse and encourages the same bad behaviour by those fans that think the "stars" can do no wrong.

that's right, the celebrity privilege took its toll with tiger as well.

whose fault is it that they feel the way they feel though? how have they gotten to the point of feeling so superior?

whose fault, the fans. gotta know everything that the celebrity is doing oooooing and ahhhhing over everything associated with the star. and the media, they feed the public with all the good and dirt. one moment they're behind them the next condemning them. all the time giving the star the attention they crave and giving them an inflated sense of self importance.

ego can be a good thing, but an overblown one can be the ruination of a person altogether.

Gee, this man thinks he's the center of the world for everyone. He even closed down receiving tweets. Not because he was getting tons of support from the very few fans he has, but people were tweeting what a real azzhole he is and that es no better then anyone else.

Just top watching 30 rock and all Alec Baldwin films. That will teach him that the people make you, and the people can break you as well.

He should be playing in a film titled One Big Douche, because that pretty much all he is in life.

I guess you missed the point that he was making fun of himself.

Or, he could have just been a man about it, and simply walked on stage, and stated, "I apologise to the crew and the passengers for being such an ass-hole." Then a pause, and continue, "Sorry, I have to catch a flight".

Laughter and applause.

I didn't miss the point, he is trying to save face with the public....which will never happen ( well maybe to you), and I have watched 30 rock and find no intelligent humor in any of the episodes I've watched....He treated his own daughter and ex wife like dog doo.....so go ahead and idealize him, while this is still a free country and you have some rights left......and I could care less about politics, most if not all are lying , adulterers, tax cheating, insider trading, self serving narcissist, and that goes for all politicians..........but have a happy and healthy holiday anyway... :)

Perhaps someone should let you in on a little secret: Alec Baldwin is an actor. He pretends to be people other than himself. When he acts, in a tv show or on a commercial, he is saying things that other people wrote.

It was pretty funny. I don't get peoples "uproar"....

Being able to fly is great. But we pay (and a lot) for the privlidge of flying. It can be hard to keep your tolerance in check because of the absolute ridiculous low level of training, low level of service, and low level of comfort provided.

That said, he poked fun at himself. It wasn't really a jab at the airline, he's acknowledging he kind of blew a fuse over a minor issue. Airline security? Get real.

That's the "offense" the airline and others are taking. That airline security is serious and you shouldn't be on your Ipad. Uh...........how is being on your cell phone or Ipad really the most serious threat in airline security? Shouldn't they be more focused on people who are continually able to beat the security?

The bit was funny. Get over it. There are other things to be way more offended about.

What a shame. I loved Alec Baldwin back in his Red October days. He was Jack Ryan spot on, and I'll always think of him that way. (Sorry Harrison). I really liked him in the movies he did, even the ones not as good as October. Any more, he comes across as a tiresome, doughy, loudmouthed blowhard.

I haven't bothered with SNL since the Belushi era, it's become the epitome of loud and stupid as a substitute for funny. Hearing what this childish self-entitled buffoon did to justify his behavior reminds me even more so than seeing him the last ten years- A drama critic I read in Syracuse once said of a local stage group's play, "They're so good they don't even know they're doing Parody!"

Give it up, Alec. You're not that good. Your show sucks. Go away.

You really aren't in a position to author a critique of SNL if you don't actually watch it. In many ways the comedy of Belushi was actually much more loud and stupid (though I love his comedy as well) than many of the brilliant comedians that have performed on that show since him, Phil Hartman being just one of a great handful. And if you are a fan of comedy, it is hard to believe that you have actually watched 30 Rock and are willing to state that it sucks. The writing is top notch as are the actors. It's unfortunate that so many people let their political views get in the way of their ability to enjoy well crafted entertainment. BTW 30 Rock pokes fun at both liberals and conservatives.

I'm sorry, where IS the political view in the above post? I didn't shout "Obozo!" or ""Evil Corporate Greed!" even once.

I watched his show for about half the first season, mostly as a contrast to Studio 60, which was infinitely superior but too smart to last on network TV. Being ever hopeful, I tune back in now and then. Still sucks.

SOS SNL. And, sorry, but I still WATCH it now and then. Definately gotta give you Phil Hartman, I still miss him. Even Eddie Murphy, until he sold out. (Though he's a great Donkey). Mostly though to paraphrase Dennis Miller (!) "Stupid has replaced funny, and cruel is mistaken for hip." For every one of the above mentioned we have 50 Farrel's, Sandler's, and Fey's.

And what's hard to believe? Humour, even more than beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

            Stepping up on my soapbox....

You know what? I truly believe Alec Baldwin didn't choose (because make no bones about it, he had a choice) he didn't choose to follow the flight attendant's directive to turn off his electronic gadget because he simply didn't want to....period. I have read so much of people assuming he didn't because he is a celebrity and those that believe it was beneath him to listen to a lowly flight attendant. I really don't think that was it. I think unlike a lot of celebrities, Alec recognizes he is not his profession. There are a lot of people that believe just because of their profession (actor, singer, lawyer, doctor, banker, politician, etc.) that it means they should be lauded and held to a higher level of respect and treatment by others. I don't happen to believe that.

I know MANY professionals that by day command accolades and people bowing down to kiss their butts, but by night are closet homosexuals, pedophiles, alcoholics, drug addicts, abuse their spouses, thieves, liars, etc. etc. etc. What someone does for a living should never be confused with who they are as a person. But that's just my opinion.

No indeed, Alec, he strikes me as a man that is an actor by profession, but is still very much down to Earth. When on a plane something tells me he isn't coming off as grandiose because he is a star, but is instead a typical man that you might find in a blue collar bar in Boston somewhere knocking back a few. So just like the MILLIONS of other Americans that don't look up when the flight attendants try to give safety directions at the start of a flight. Those that don't buckle their seat belts and yes....CHOOSE to ignore the directive to turn off all electronics, he was no different. As someone on TV pointed out, how do you think the tweet went out over Twitter just as the incident was unfolding? Yes people...someone at the very time he was being chastised for using his electronic device, someone else was doing the same covertly. Just as MILLIONS of people do all the time.

But this is where I take issue. We have become a nation of "No one is going to tell me what to do....it's not a big deal if I......." And there in lies the problem. It's not a big deal until it becomes a big deal - then all Hell breaks lose. Laws and regulations are in place for a reason. We live in an age where so many people don't like authority telling them what to do. Businesses shouldn't be allowed to tell you what to do in their establishment. The government should not be allowed to tell you what to do, what is this Russia? No one wants to abide by laws, yet everyone wants to be protected.

Don't tell me I have to smoke outside! Yet if you are allowed to do so inside you infringe on the rights of those that don't want second hand smoke. Don't tell me I can use my cell phone while driving! Yet look at the number of traffic accidents and deaths caused daily by distracted drivers. An airplane crashes and passengers scramble in confusion to get out. "They never told us what to do to get off the plane...I mean they did, but who listens to that...."

There is a reason why the airlines tell passengers to turn off their electronics. Yes, even while sitting on the tarmac. Alec Baldwin and the millions of Americans that ignore those instructions need to adjust their thought process and simply do what is asked of them. No one is saying you can't think for yourself people, but if we want to live in a civilized world, we must behave in a civil manner.

Stepping down from my soapbox now......

A pet peeve of mine is when people, even strangers online, skew my words to fit the narrative they are trying to push. I gave that particular list of attributes, habits, actions because people who "believe" they are their jobs, believe they are above everyone else because of their wealth or what they do for a living supposedly don't have to deal with things the rest of society does.

They too struggle with identity issues as it relates to their sexuality. One need only look at any TV show or cable news outlet and you will find MANY that are whispered to be Gay but unwilling to come out of the closet. Those who have drug and alcohol addictions but pretend as if all is fine and they are in control. Do you honestly believe only Bernie Madoff ripped people off to support his lavish lifestyle? I think not. Investment Bankers abound that by day are supposedly well respected and trusted but behind closed doors are nothing but thieves. Mel Gibson, Chris Brown and countless other celebrities are adored because of their talent, yet have shown themselves to be abusers to the women in their lives.

So I stand my belief that we are not our professions. What we do for a living should never be confused with who we are. Because you can have millions in the bank, a private jet and all the trappings of wealth and celebrity status and STILL have all the issues "the little people" have. Just as that "lowly" janitor who is poor as can be can have more honor and integrity in his little finger than the CEO whose floors he shines nightly.

Still not buying the gay slam, in or out of the closet. In the few cases where a wingnut of some sort makes a living bashing gays, while paying men for sex.... are the only cases you maybe have a tiny tiny bit of traction. I have been out for most of my professional life, but there were a few times that was not a option. For my safety and the safety of my paycheck.

As far as celebrities that are gay or straight, coming out is a personal decision. Not mine or yours to make for them. Further it has nothing to do with being rude toward a flight attendant or feeling common rules of society do not apply in their life's.

He can fly private plane, save fellow travelers the delay of him being kicked off again.

Welcome back Kotter was a lot of fun. That Horshack laugh was great. Who could do that without choking half to death.

Alec Baldwin has turned into another Charlie Sheen. I never watch 30 Rock but if I did, I'd stop watching it. Stars think that they have the right to ignore the rules. I saw his little act on SNL, and I didn't think that it was funny. HE probably did, but it wasn't. I feel sorry for airline attendants these days. They are just doing their job. He needs to come back down to Earth and realize that to most people, he is just another person in this world and is not so important.

Still a little boy, masquerading as a man.

Typical of too many "men" now.

FInally, an honest conservative. The only reason so many want to jump on Baldwin is because of his politics. If it has been his idiot brother Stephen, the same people bitching about Alec would be screaming about another example of lost freedom, overregulation and intrusive big government.

You really think that only conservatives are complaining about this pompous ass? So what has Stephen Baldwin done that required conservatives to give him a pass?

about another example of lost freedom, overregulation and intrusive big government.

Didn't bother to read the article. Sick of his arrogance. The only thing I like is that you never hear anything negative from either of his brothers. They are very low key and aren't so full of themselves.

The comments here are really bizarre. Are some of you really that upset at Alec Baldwin? Why? Surely not because he got kicked off an airplane - which is oftentimes even celebrated under the right circumstances.

Perhaps there is something about Baldwin I don't know that should inspire such hatred? Nevertheless, without knowing him myself I would not be prepared to pass judgement on him; and certainly not on a public forum even then.

They are upset that a television personality thinks that it is okay for him to have separate rules in life apart from the rest of us. When I get on a plane, I immediately turn off my phone. That's the rule. He delayed other people from getting to their destinations and probably caused them to miss connecting flights. That's okay with you? It's selfish and juvenile behavior. It's not okay.

I agree completely. Next time, if he's a host again on SNL, I won't watch it. I actually ignored his skit this week. I couldn't believe that he would come on a show and forgive himself. It wasn't funny. He just proved that he was even MORE of a jerk. And, to refer to yourself as a national treasure? I think that he actually believes that BS. Hey Alec....to most people you are a NOBODY!
