LOS ANGELES — Lowe's Home Improvement has found itself facing a backlash after the retail giant pulled ads from a reality show about American Muslims.

The retail giant stopped advertising on TLC's "All-American Muslim" after a conservative group known as the Florida Family Association complained, saying the program was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

The show premiered last month and chronicles the lives of five families from Dearborn, Mich., a Detroit suburb with a large Muslim and Arab-American population.

A state senator from Southern California said Sunday he was considering calling for a boycott.

Calling the Lowe's decision "un-American" and "naked religious bigotry," Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, told The Associated Press he would also consider legislative action if Lowe's doesn't apologize to Muslims and reinstate its ads. The senator sent a letter outlining his complaints to Lowe's Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Niblock.

"The show is about what it's like to be a Muslim in America, and it touches on the discrimination they sometimes face. And that kind of discrimination is exactly what's happening here with Lowe's," Lieu said.

The Florida group sent three emails to its members, asking them to petition Lowe's to pull its advertising. Its website was updated to say that "supporters' emails to advertisers make a difference."

The North Carolina-based Lowe's issued a statement apologizing for having "managed to make some people very unhappy."

"Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views," the statement said. "As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance."

The apology doesn't go far enough, Lieu said. The senator vowed to look into whether Lowe's violated any California laws and said he would also consider drafting a senate resolution condemning the company's actions.

"We want to raise awareness so that consumers will know during this holiday shopping season that Lowe's is engaging in religious discrimination," Lieu said.

Besides an apology and reinstatement of the ads, Lieu said he hoped Lowe's would make an outreach to the community about bias and bigotry.

Lieu's office said a decision was expected Wednesday or Thursday on whether to proceed with the boycott.

Lowe's said company officials are trying to make arrangements to talk directly to Lieu about his concerns and clarify the company's position.

Suehaila Amen, whose family is featured on "All-American Muslim," said she was disappointed by the Lowe's decision.

"I'm saddened that any place of business would succumb to bigots and people trying to perpetuate their negative views on an entire community," Amen, 32, told The Detroit News on Sunday.

Dawud Walid, Michigan director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said his group felt "extreme disappointment" at Lowe's "capitulation to bigotry."

Walid said he has heard expressions of anger and calls for a boycott by Muslims but said a key to resolving the Lowe's advertising controversy will be how non-Muslim religious leaders and others react to Lowe's decision.

"I will be picking up the phone tomorrow to some of our friends and allies to explain the situation to them," Walid said Sunday.

There you go..Lowes offered a perfect reasonable reason why they withdrew their ads . But is not good enough for politicians trying to capitalize on it.

Notice how its called bigotry by the activist groups and politicians that are finding fault with Lowes pulling their ads, even though the entire concept and title of the show is bigotry itself.

And Lieu wants to consider legislative action. Does this not make the biggest statement of all, where the priorities lye with these corrupt politicians. lol.

I love when bigotry is used to defend bigotry. Do they sell white sheets at Lowes? The families depicted in this show are better Americans than anyone associated with the inappropriately named " Florida Family Association."

I love when bigotry is used to defend bigotry.

And then you say -

Do they sell white sheets at Lowes?

The families depicted in this show are better Americans than anyone associated with the inappropriately named "Florida Family Association."

I do not know those families depicted in the show, or members of the Florida Family Association. Do you?

This is about Lowes right to reject their ads being shown on a program, which they have every right to do so.

I know that the only reason the Florida Family Association took the position it did is because of idiotic bigotry towards other Americans based on the faith of those Americans. They did not point to any particular thing said or done on the show; they simply do not want Muslim Americans to be depicted on TV as anything other than bomb throwing, honor killing monsters. I know that any person who is a member of that organization must share the values of that organization. I do know what a family that participates in KKK rallies is like; they are hateful, ignorant bigots. Anyone who shares the views of this organization is likewise a hateful, ignorant bigot.

Finally, of course Lowes has the right to kiss the ass of bigots to make sure that they still get their business. Not a very good business decision since bigots are, thankfully, in the minority in this country.

If you go to the FFA website, in addition to learning how profoundly un-Christian this organization really is, they allow you to send an e-mail to advertisers supporting the FFA position. They do, however, let you modify the e-mail. I used their e-mail to encourage advertisers to reject the hate and bigotry of the FFA and to continue to advertise on the show.

Enlighten me on what in my comment about an organization is a violation of the COH. Are you a member of the FFA? Or perhaps the KKK? If you are, then I do apologize for insulting you. Perhaps you should alert us to your affiliations so we know that we can not insult them without insulting you.

Paddy -

LOL I could imply your membership with several unsavory tin foil hat groups but that would insult them on so many levels. I will not engage further in this silly little game of lets see who I can insult and denigrate OPENLY without attracting the attention of the Newsvine moderators. You sir are a lost cause IMO

I did not imply that anyone was a member of any group. I was commenting on the ffa. Don't you get tired of misrepresenting what I post as for ring violations when, in fact, I simply tell the truth?

right.

#disconnect #hypocrisy

gee, maybe you could, idunno, watch the show so you can at least get some sense of knowing them, and do the same with FFA, checking their website to see what sort of activities they are and are not involved with. #youwillknowthembytheirfruits

You sir are a lost cause IMO

So a show about Muslims is bigotry?

I won't waste time trying to figure that one out. Maybe the crime is "filming while brown."

No one mentioned anything about "filming while brown" except you! That could have something to do with not getting the concept of my comment!

My bottom line on this is IF Lowe's executives actually watched the show before making the decision to pull their ads then they are well within their rights to make such a decision. If they made such a politically incorrect decision without even bothering to watch it then they are wrong, period !!

You must think the FFA has magical powers to control the minds of the advertising Executives at Lowes. They are just another podunk group of people trying to ram their odious views down our collective throats, much like the OWSer. The ACLU has more sense and respect then either of the groups I mentioned.

Shows will make or break themselves, good ratings you get to stay, bad ratings bye-bye. I think the ratings would determine if someone wants advertise on the show. I think everyone should leave the advertisers alone, on all sides. With that being Lowes can advertise where they want to. It seems there are groups on the "left" who jump up and down making a fit when someone advertises on shows they don't like or agree with, so it goes both ways.

groups on the "left who jump up and down" do so because a show isn't being inclusive or is derogatory toward a group. groups on the right who jump up and down do so because a show isn't being exclusionary or derogatory toward a group.

Thank you for proving where you stand on this....no bias on your part is there?

A company is free to use their limited advertising dollars where they see fit. Shows with high viewer ratings make better sense dollar for dollar (think Super Bowl or The World Series even Dances with the Stars...) . Business can not afford to waste money advertising on some then some little niche market, reality show with a low viewer count. Just basic Business survival instincts.

how did i prove where i stand with that? where i stand should be fairly and more obvious from other comments, but no, no bias.

        Lowes' "limited advertising dollars"? right.

but okay; then you suggest they run on the Super Bowl which is like $3M/half-minute. incredible.

and that wasn't Lowes' excuse for pulling advertising; not a "reality show with a low viewer count", but because of a right-wing Christian group jumping up and down.

nice attempt (and i say that insincerely) to muddy the facts, but "thank you for proving where you stand on this....no bias on your part is there?"
