LOS ANGELES — Tom Cruise's new mission remains impossible to beat at the box office.

Studio estimates Sunday placed "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" in the No. 1 spot for the second-straight weekend with $31.3 million. With a $142.9 million domestic total, it's the first $100 million hit with Cruise in the lead role since 2006's "Mission: Impossible III."

The movie led a solid New Year's weekend as Hollywood managed fair business to end a sluggish year on a more promising note for 2012.

Robert Downey Jr.'s "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" finished second again with $21.7 million, raising its domestic total to $132.1 million.

The family sequel "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" was still at No. 3 with $18.3 million to lift its haul to $94.6 million.

Amazes me why anyone would go watch a mediocre move in a theatre when there are several classics with quality to watch and enjoy at home. Haven't been to a theatre in 30 years and will never be in one again.

I'm sure there are many other qualified actors that could have played the role and cost less than this arrogant Cruise. Years back he sold a pic of him and his little girl for millions, same with Angelina and Brad.

WTF is wrong with America when they think these people are gods and deserve everything handed to them.

I personally am sick of the same actors and actresses in every other freaking film that I no longer even go to the theater. I just wait for the DVD on Netflix of BB, and sometimes I don't even bother with those either.

I understand your point. Idolatry is something I don't indulge in, either. I am sometimes a fan and admirer of 'real' people I encounter that I admire, but not for their outward appearance that is often falsified, and is just for 'show'. I appreciate an attractive man as an accompaniment, but not as a focal point.

He needs to make as much money as he can for now. Considering that he buys his kid everything she asks for and her taste is not cheap, he needs big bucks.

Here's a suggestion to Hollywood brass concerned about low Christmas box office results...MAKE SOME CHRISTMAS MOVIES !!! Tom Cruise is a great action star, but wondering why box office totals suck when the biggest Christmas movie offered is the third MI sequel and there are only a handful of actual Christmas movies this year just goes to show how truly out of touch current Hollywood execs are !!
