PETA seeks memorials to cows killed on Ill. roads

CHICAGO — An animal rights group wants Illinois to install highway signs in memory of cattle killed when trucks hauling them flipped in two separate wrecks.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked for permission to buy the markers, one in suburban Chicago and one northwest of Peoria. The group says the signs would pay tribute to the more than 20 cattle killed as a result of negligent driving this year.

Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Josh Kauffman says the request will likely be denied because the state's Roadside Memorial Act specifies that only relatives who lost loved ones in highway crashes may request memorials.

In 2006, Virginia rejected PETA's request for highway markers to memorialize hogs killed in crashes on their way to slaughter at Smithfield Foods.

PETA killed more household pets last year (2,200) than they found homes for. I find PETA very sanctimonious. http://www.petakillsanimals.com/proof/

What's next? Markers for all of the deer, bunnies, racoons and opossums "murdered" by cars? Or how about markers outside every restaurant that serves beef and fish? How about a marker outside PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, marking the spot where common sense died?

I wonder if they would post a marker outside of their Headquarters in honor of the 2,000+ cats and Dogs they Euthanized. I would be willing to get together the marker if the would install it out front.

Remember how McDonald's used to have the number of burgers sold on their signs? Maybe PETA needs one with a counter of how many animals they've euthanized.

I think it's really sad to have to put an animal down, but there are more animals than there are people willing to adopt and there are not enough resources to keep them alive. I'd rather someone euthanize their pet than just toss them on the street like someone did with my kitty that I rescued.

Yeah, well then you will love PETA. They euthanize around 97% of the animals they take in. They are such humanitarians.

I'm not a PETA fan by any means but I believe that euthanizing unwanted animals is more humane than letting them just wonder the streets starving and getting run over by vehicles or perhaps attacking people.

Maybe "trying" to find them homes would be a good thing. If they are taking custody of them that is the least that they can do. Often they promise to do just that, then turn around and euthanize the animals in less than a 24 hour period. There are multiple stories about this happening. If you want to fund someone who will help animals there are tons of no kill shelters and many local animal shelters that at least try to find homes for their animals. Before we label an animal unwanted we might actually want to check and see if they really are in other words.

I agree with what you're saying Jimmy. I'm just saying that if I were no longer able to care for my fur baby and no one I knew wanted him, I would rather put him to sleep than just dump him on the side of the road.

That is great, but PETA is all about animals rights, and then they take them away from the animal by putting it to sleep without the smallest attempt to take care of it.

I'm not arguing with you! I agree with you. I think it's high time that people see PETA for what they truly are. Everyone I know already think PETA's full of a bunch of whack jobs, but now we can see that they are hypocrites too. Advocating for animal rights, all while killing animals behind our backs and pretending they don't. It's dispicable.

except that anyone with ETHICS doesn't kill an animal they claim to be "saving" from cruelty..

people with real ethics find homes or donate to no-kill shelters...... think how many animals they could feed for the price of any of their fruitless protests..

they are fame-seekers not true ethical people...

But what else can you do when there are way more animals than there are people who want them?

I don't know. Maybe fund shelters and build new ones instead of giving to ALF and other terrorists groups. Pay workers to take care of pets, rather than lawyers to come up with dumb schemes that make you look silly. They have a massive budget, they just use it for fame and notoriety, rather than for helping the animals they claim to.

PETA has long been known for doing some strange things but a memorial marker for cows? They were on the way to become hamburger anyway when they died in a traffic accident. I mean this isn't Lassie or Smokey the bear but some cows who were only ever even born for the sole purpose of being on a plate.

a memorial should only be placed if this was from negligent deer obstructing the roadway and causing the death of innocent drivers. deer should be shot for such cruel killings of humans and causing the destuction of vehicular property

PETA person for ethical treatment by animals...

Pidgeons need to be caged for their cruel bombardment of people and statues..

I comment Minks, Fox, Bear, and other animals that graciously keep humans warm..

I agree with PETA. People who hit and kill cows should be heavily fined. It's a waste of good meat.

(Good old PETA. Always good for a few laughs)

Oh what a wonderful idea! Along with the markers they could have signs up directing everyone to the slaughter house! *snicker*

What are the cows doing out on the roads? They are supposed to be properly controlled behind fences. If this comes to pass then if makes sense to have markers for raccoons, squirrels, gophers, and any other animal that gets killed on the highway. What the h*ll is a PETA?

If PETA had their way the cows and animals would have free roam of the streets and the people would be properly controled behind fences.
