Study: Fifth of Germans harbor some anti-Semitism

BERLIN — A new study by a Parliament-appointed commission shows 20 percent of Germans harbor "latent" anti-Semitism, but anti-Jewish crimes are almost exclusively committed by the far right.

The study — which draws on several different surveys and other research — puts Germans in the middle of the pack in Europe, with a German university survey showing more latent anti-Semitism in countries such as Poland, Hungary and Portugal, and less in Italy, Britain, the Netherlands and France.

The study released Monday said the surveys show that about one-fifth of Germans agree with anti-Semitic statements, such as "Jews have too much power in business."

The study also showed that 90 percent of anti-Semitic crimes are committed by right-wing extremists, who number about 26,000 according to official estimates.

It recommends better coordination of local, state and federal strategies to combat anti-Semitism.

Assuming that this study is legitimate, I am not surprised by the results. I don't think it is an issue inherent with the German people. I think you will find similar sentiments throughout the developed world, and not just towards Jews, but towards anyone who can easily be identified as other.

There are reams of data published about humanity's tendency towards clannishness, and it is largely accepted as truth. However, as beings capable of making choices based on reasonable deduction instead of on impulse, we can choose to not give in to our exclusive inclinations.

There are social constructs that reinforce our propensity for Us versus Them behavior, and those are things like nationalism, religion, and racial-identity. If we want to live in a world without racism, we must remove racial-identity.

What purpose does race serve except to readily identify our team and their team? Such thinking perhaps made sense when extended-family groups fought over the same hunting grounds, but they only create unnecessary barriers in the modern, developed world (in which most of us live).

In the article's study of German racism (of which I see no link to the full story), I wonder if those polled were asked about their feeling towards people of Turkish descent? Germany has a large number of immigrants from Turkey, and I am curious about how they would compare to the Jewish, in a study like this.

I think this is a lower percent than of Americans. Perhaps they miscounted.
