Ethics commission looks into casino PAC funding

AUGUSTA — A Maine ethics board has given the go-ahead for a deeper investigation into the finances of two political action committees that support efforts to bring a casino to Lewiston last year.

The Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices decided 4-0 Wednesday to move forward with a complaint filed by longtime casino opponent Dennis Bailey.

The commission found sufficient grounds to believe that a violation may have occurred.

Bailey and the group CasinosNO! question the source of $412,000 in contributions to two PACs, the People of Lewiston Auburn Committee and Green Jobs for ME, which supported the statewide initiative that voters rejected.

Peter Robinson, who did the financial reporting for both PACs, says he complied fully with campaign finance reporting requirements.
