JERUSALEM — Israeli police say "death to Christians" and other Hebrew-language graffiti has been scrawled on a Greek Orthodox monastery in Jerusalem.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said on Tuesday that "price tag" was also painted on the monastery in the Valley of the Cross, near Israel's parliament.

The phrase "price tag" refers to retaliation by suspected Jewish extremists for Israeli government actions against settlers.

Such acts originally targeted West Bank mosques but have recently expanded to include a mosque inside Israel, Israeli military bases, and now, a Christian holy site.

Army Radio reported that "Maccabees of Migron" was painted on the monastery, too. Maccabees were ancient Jewish heroes, and Migron is an unauthorized settlement facing a court-ordered evacuation.

Mr. Netanyahu's strategy, in addition to being reelected, seems to be the continuation of settlements and the growth of Israel that will, eventually, bring the hard headed Palestinian leader to the negotiating table. Until the Palestinians are willing to recognize the legal, Sovereign Jewish State of Israel and sign a peace treaty, Netanyahu will continue to use the pressure of developing more and more West Bank land for Israel. Without the military means to stop this expansion, one would think Mr. Abbas would eventually grasp the concept that the Palestinian people are living on shrinking land.

I disagree that the settlements are used primarily an incentive to bargaining for a two state solution. I'm sure Mr Abbas is sorely aware of the expansion to the exclusion of Palestinians.

It just shows, day after day, Netanyahu's "commitment" to peace. "Legalizing" illegal outposts is not the way to move forward

Maria,

Neither is firing missiles into Israel from Gaza. Hamas and the PA may differ, but they are both Palestinians and cut from the same cloth. The Palestinians need to get it together if they want a State of their own.
