Population: 2,700,551

AGE:

Median age: 36.3

Percentage of population 65 and over: 12 percent

RACE:

66.2 percent white, 26.5 percent Hispanic or Latino origin, 8.1 percent black, 7.2 percent Asian

LANGUAGE:

Language other than English spoken at home: 28.6 percent

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or higher: 84.7 percent

Bachelor's degree or higher: 21.7 percent

MONEY:

Median household income: $51,001

Families below poverty level: 11.1 percent

Housing units occupied by owners: 57.2 percent

Housing units occupied by renters: 42.8 percent

2008 PRESIDENTIAL RESULTS:

Barack Obama, 55.2 percent; John McCain, 42.7 percent

REGISTERED VOTERS:

Republican, 471,292

Democratic, 566,360

Undeclared, 222,179

NEVADA QUICK FACTS:

— Nevada has no state income tax. Roughly one-third of the state's general fund budget comes from taxes on gambling revenues. As of July, there were 256 casinos statewide that had $1 million or more in annual gross gambling revenue.

— About two-thirds of the Silver State's population live in or around Las Vegas.

— Nearly 90 percent of all land in Nevada is federally controlled.

— Roughly two dozen brothels legally operate in Nevada. Prostitution is legal in 10 Nevada counties, illegal in five and neither allowed nor disallowed in two. It's illegal in the counties that include Las Vegas and Reno, the state's population centers.

— Nevada has the most mountain ranges of any state.

— Nevada leads the nation in gold production.

— The second syllable in Nevada rhymes with add, not odd.
