LOS ANGELES — Federal prosecutors say a Torrance, Calif.-based seafood corporation has been ordered to pay $1 million in fines and community service donations for falsely labeling frozen catfish fillets as grouper.

U.S. attorney's office spokesman Thom Mrozek says Seafood Solutions Inc. was fined $700,000 on Monday, and ordered to donate $300,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Seafood Solutions and two defendants were convicted on July 25, 2011, for trafficking in fish known to be transported and sold in violation of the U.S. Lacey Act.

Co-defendants Chau-Shing Lin and Christopher Ragone have pleaded guilty and are scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 13.

The charitable donation is to be used to fund projects related to methodologies, databases and other research into the identification of marine organisms.

Our seafood industry is the only one that is required to show at the market the consumer info. Americans are told by law if it is fresh or frozen, wild caught or farmed and USA or foreign. All of our meats, vegetables and processed food should be required to meet those same minimal and reasonable standards.

Is this guy's fine fair? I don't know. Lying about this fish is wrong. I also don't fully trust the government.

It is wrong that the United States does not require meat producers to meet just the same basic standards as the fishing industry. It is worse that the USA treats foreign fish and free trade and American fish and an enviornmental issue.

If you buy baked stuffed haddock, you should get what they claim to be selling instead of fillet of boot sole! This is a serious problem because anyone can tell chicken from beef, but most can't tell what type of fish they are eating.

Like paying for high test, and getting regular!

Your car will still run, but your wallet is lighter, and the creeps get richer. Greed.
