DENVER — The college student accused of "glitter bombing" Mitt Romney after the Colorado caucuses has been fired from his unpaid internship with state Senate Democrats.

Police say 20-year-old Peter Smith threw glitter at Romney as the Republican presidential hopeful greeted supporters in Denver on Tuesday. Smith faces charges of causing a disturbance, throwing a missile and unlawful acts.

Colorado Senate majority chief of staff John Cevette says Smith was terminated Thursday. He was interning as part of a course at the University of Colorado Denver.

Some activists have used "glitter bombing" to protest politicians' opposition to same-sex marriage. Smith has said glittering Romney was worth it, but he worries he could be expelled from school.

A conservative-leaning blog, Colorado Peak Politics, first reported that Smith worked for Senate Democrats and had been fired.

And security wisks a "dangerous" glitter bomber to an unknown place for an undetermined amount of time....!

Yes. That glitter has been known to kill people! It's more dangerous than icicles combined with BB guns!

That is not the point. Flour has never killed anyone either. If I walk up to you and throw flour in your face I'd bet you would be concerned and try to attack me.

Should people really be allowed to throw stuff at people they disagree with?

Calm down Jave- it was sarcasm. I agree the individual did something wrong, but I don't believe he should serve time for it. Give him a hefty fine and be done with it. His goal was to attract attention to the group he supports and the fact that he opposes Mit Romney. Mission accomplished. I would personally like to see Mit Romney seek an audience with Mr. Smith to discuss their differing viewpoints, but that probably won't happen.

Do you remember when that kid got tazed for running onto the baseball field? I believe he deserved every volt from that tazer gun because the potential for harm to the players was there. No officer will stop doing their job (to mitigate a threat) to consider what one's intentions are.

I'd send the guy to jail. Not for very long, maybe a month. More likely I'd give him probation for a couple years. The penalty should be great enough that this kind of behavior stops.

It would be a bad thing if everyone expressed their political objections by throwing stuff at people. If we throw glitter at those that oppose gay marriage should we throw flour at those that support gay marriage?

Should the penalties for throwing stuff on people, be light enough that it falls under the 'civil disobediance' type offenses instead of assault?

If we throw in some eggs, sugar and butter, we can make glitter cookies.

There is a reason this nonsense is illegal. You can't have people throwing stuff in peoples faces in a civilized society. If you pulled this nonsense in most of society you would likely get your ass kicked.

Give this clown a couple months in jail to teach him a lesson.

That was a stupid thing for him to do. If you want to protest someone's views go to the polls and don't elect them. Throwing things at them isn't the answer.

Sammy, I agree with your comments.

As for glitter, I love the stuff. I toss it in the cobwebs that are in the dense juniper trees next to my deck. BUT, I would never toss it on anyone. If glitter gets in the eyes, it can be VERY painful and can even cause injury to the eyes.

Mr. Glitter Bomber will probably be (at least what I would do)

  • Banned from any political work (election-related (except for voting), lobbying) until Inauguration day 2016
  • Serve 5 months in prison
  • serve 12 months of probation
  • be barred from any other state job in Colorado for life.

They actually charged him with "throwing a missile"?? Is there really a such thing as a glitter missile and wouldn't it have to be launched?

Good I'm glad no one, absolutely no one should be permitted to throw something (physically attack) at someone especially a politician. I don't care if you're gay or straight.
