JERUSALEM — He's considered to be one of the greatest scientists of all time. But Sir Isaac Newton was also an influential theologian who applied a scientific approach to the study of scripture, Hebrew and Jewish mysticism.

Now Israel's national library, an unlikely owner of a vast trove of Newton's writings, has digitized his theological collection — some 7,500 pages in Newton's own handwriting — and put it online. Among the yellowed texts are Newton's famous prediction of the apocalypse in 2060.

Newton revolutionized physics, mathematics and astronomy in the 17th and 18th century, laying the foundations for most of classical mechanics — with the principal of universal gravitation and the three laws of motion bearing his name.

However, the curator of Israel's national library's humanities collection said Newton was also a devout Christian who dealt far more in theology than he did in physics and believed that scripture provided a "code" to the natural world.

"Today, we tend to make a distinction between science and faith, but to Newton it was all part of the same world," said Milka Levy-Rubin. "He believed that careful study of holy texts was a type of science, that if analyzed correctly could predict what was to come."

So he learned how to read Hebrew, scrolled through the Bible and delved into the study of Jewish philosophy, the mysticism of Kabbalah and the Talmud — a compendium of Jewish oral law and stories about 1,500 years old.

For instance, Newton based his calculation on the end of days on information gleaned from the Book of Daniel, which projected the apocalypse 1,260 years later. Newton figured that this count began from the crowning of Charlemagne as Roman emperor in the year 800.

The papers cover topics such as interpretations of the Bible, theology, the history of ancient cultures, the Tabernacle and the Jewish Temple.

The collection also contains maps that Newton sketched to assist him in his calculations and his attempts to reveal the secret knowledge he believed was encrypted within.

He attempted to project what the end of days would look like, and the role Jews would play when it happened. Newton's objective curiosity in Judaism and the Holy Land contrasted with the anti-Jewish sentiment expressed by many leading Christian scholars of the era, Levy-Rubin said.

"He took a great interest in the Jews, and we found no negative expressions toward Jews in his writing," said Levy-Rubin. "He said the Jews would ultimately return to their land."

How his massive collection of work ended up in the Jewish state seems mystical in its own right.

Years after Newton's death in 1727, his descendants gave his scientific manuscripts to his alma mater, the University of Cambridge.

But the university rejected his nonscientific papers, so the family auctioned them off at Sotheby's in London in 1936. As chance would have it, London's other main auction house — Christie's — was selling a collection of Impressionist art the same day that attracted far more attention.

Only two serious bidders arrived for the Newton collection that day. The first was renowned British economist John Maynard Keynes, who bought Newton's alchemy manuscripts. The second was Abraham Shalom Yahuda — a Jewish Oriental Studies scholar — who got Newton's theological writings.

Yahuda's collection was bequeathed to the National Library of Israel in 1969, years after his death. In 2007, the library exhibited the papers for the first time and now they are available for all to see online.

The collection contains pages after pages of Newton's flowing cursive handwriting on fraying parchment in 18th-century English, with words like "similitudes," "prophetique" and "Whence."

Two print versions in modern typeface are also available for easier reading: A "diplomatic" one that includes changes and corrections Newton made in the original manuscript, and a "clean" version that incorporates the corrections.

All of the papers are linked to the Newton Project, which is hosted by the University of Sussex and includes other collections of Newton's writings.

The Israeli library says the manuscripts help illuminate Newton's science and well as his persona.

"As far as Newton was concerned, his approach was that history was as much a science as physics. His world view was that his 'lab' for understanding history was the holy books," said Levy-Rubin. "His faith was no less important to him than his science."

You can access free online versions of Newton's "Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel" and "Observations upon the Apocalypse of St. John" at this link:

http://www.preteristarchive.com/Books/1733_newton_observations.html

This site is dedicated to the preterist interpretation of prophecy. Preterism is one of three major schools of prophetic interpretation. I subscribe to a little known fourth school.

You can also read Newton's works on other sites, which are easily accessed via a web search.

The prophecies are important because they affirm the lordship of God over time. Prophecies are evidence of a supernatural dimension that ought to be studied by scientifically-minded scholars.

A few years ago, I set out to conduct an independent investigation of the biblical prophecies. I sought all available sources and immersed by mind with the various points of view. Each of the major views was supported by its own set of facts.

I strenuously determined not to permit any presuppositions to influence my inquiry and conclusions. I believed the pursuit of truth to be a worthy ideal and sought guidance from God through humble prayers and trust that truth is ascertainable.

Even points of doctrine before thought settled I subjected to open review.

I discovered a number of critical insights that to my knowledge are entirely new to the "science" of theology. Foremost among these are the harmony of the monotheistic religions under the platform of a philosophy known as Solidarity; and, the roles of complimentary Dual Messiahs.

I do not parrot the position of any religious group.

The time prophecies found in the eighth and ninth chapters of Daniel validate both messiahs. I can readily show that Jesus Christ came on schedule, as has His successor. The longest time prophecy terminates October 14, 1963.

Daniel 8 predicts the resurgence of Iran (Persia), which we are witnessing even now. God's prophetic answer is found in an understanding of these time prophecies.

Sir Isaac Newton was also an influential theologian who applied a scientific approach to the study of scripture

There is no need to learn the scriptures, because truth is never found in any scripture.

Truth is not a philosophy or a theology, it doesn't come out of a book.

Theology, is all mind-projection.

Theories are substitutes, dead.

The mind can succeed only as far as science is concerned, it cannot succeed in religious consciousness.

One has to understand that the methodology that works for the outer cannot work for the inner.

Simply because the inner is the opposite dimension, the same methods will not be applicable.

You will have to find new methodology for the inner.

And that is meditation.

Those who have risen beyond mind have also risen beyond God simultaneously.

Only a man free of mind has the clarity to see things as they are.

The ultimate reality is beyond mind.

The presence of the present moment.

Only such a presence can look into the present, and then the present is eternal.

Eternity is in depth, it is not a linear movement, it is not horizontal - it is vertical.

Truth is always alive, eternally alive.

Belief is not needed.

What is needed is knowing.

Then you have understood all the secrets and all the mysteries.

Existence remains always in the present.

Consciousness is always of the present.

Life itself is always herenow.

A religious man is one who accepts this very moment

Live it, love it, enjoy it.

Many of these assertions seem rooted in eastern mysticism and would be considered inconsistent with monotheism or even outright blasphemous.

You will be surprised to know that Indian Christianity is the oldest Christianity in the world; the Vatican comes three hundred years afterwards.

India has been the source of all religions.

Why has it happened that India has been the basic source of all religions?

India is the oldest civilization, and the whole mind of India has been working and working and working in the dimension of religion.

It has come upon all the secrets of religion - no secret is unknown.

Just as the Greek mind is the source of science - the whole scientific development comes from the Greek mind, the logical mind, the Aristotelean mind - all mysticism comes from India.

And only two types of mind exist in the world: one is Greek, the other is Indian.

The Greek mind is mathematical, the Indian mind is mystical.

All mysticism comes from India; just as the sun rises in the East, all mysticism rises in the East - and India is the heart.

Jesus was trained in one of the oldest secret schools.

The school was called Essenes.

The teaching of the Essenes is pure Vedanta.

That's why Christians don't have a record of what happened to Jesus before his thirtieth year.

They have a little record of his childhood, and they have a record after his thirtieth year up to the thirty-third, when he was crucified – they know a few things.

But a phenomenon like Jesus is not an accident; it is a long preparation, it cannot happen just any moment.

Jesus was continuously being prepared during these thirty years.

He was first sent to Egypt and then he came to India.

In Egypt he learned one of the oldest traditions of secret methods, then in India he came to know about the teachings of Buddha, the Vedas, the Upanishads, and he passed through a long preparation.

Those days are not known because Jesus worked in these schools as an unknown disciple.

And Christians have knowingly dropped those records, because they would not like the 'son of God' to also be a disciple of somebody else.

They would not like the very idea that he was prepared, taught, trained – that looks humiliating.

They think the 'son of God' comes absolutely ready.

Nobody comes absolutely ready.

Osho – The Mustard Seed: Commentaries on the Fifth Gospel of Thomas.

Newton would not have upheld these views and did in fact devote the considerable talents of his mind to learning Scripture.

Newton thought the philosophers' stone was an agent of universal transmutation.

(a material believed to turn base metals into gold).

In fact, it is a Sufi metaphor for true religion, transformation, enlightenment.

Changing the unconscious mind into consciousness.

Mind into No Mind.

The logical mind into the mystical

But Newton was trying to use the logical mind, the Aristotelean mind to understand the mystical.

It is not possible!

For ten thousand years the East has chosen a path which is not of the mind – which is not intellectual, which is not rational, which is not logical, which is not scientific.

And the West has chosen the opposite.

The West is still far away from reaching the final heights of rational flight.

And perhaps it will never be able to reach the end, because its enquiry is about the objects outside you.

There is an infinity of universe, and the deeper science goes, the more it finds that it knows nothing. Its knowledge only helps it to know, that much more is to be known, and there seems to be no end in view.

On the other hand, the East has reached its goal: it has attained to the ultimate consciousness.

In a certain way, it has reached inner perfection.

This creates new difficulties of misunderstanding, because the East speaks from the heights of final realization, and the West can understand only relative truths, which are changing every day.

The East speaks in poetic metaphors; the West speaks in terms of mathematics.

The East speaks intuitively; the West, only intellectually.

It is one of the greatest problems to be solved – how East and West can come together.

Their meeting is absolutely necessary; otherwise, whatever has been attained in the East, or in the West, will all disappear into nuclear smoke.

The East has to be understood in its own ways.

If somebody tries to interpret it intellectually, he has missed the point from the very beginning.

The truth is in the Torah.

There are people like Moses who say that they have seen God, heard him, and they bring stone tablets with commandments written on them.

They say, "This is God's own handwriting." Of course, he knew only Hebrew, that's why he wrote the commandments in Hebrew.

And he gave his commandments to Moses because the Jews are his chosen people.

This fiction that Moses created is responsible for all the miseries Jews have suffered all through history.

If you carry the idea that you are the chosen people of God, then naturally you are superior to everybody.

As a by-product you are making everybody your enemy.

And the Jews are still carrying the same idea.

A belief system can help you to forget your ignorance, but it does not destroy it.

You don't know what authentic religiousness is.

You are living with borrowed ideas.

All that your mind knows has come either from the parents, or from the priest, or from the teachers, or from the society.

Just watch, and you will not be able to find a single thought that is original to you.

All is borrowed; mind lives on borrowed knowledge.

And remember that truth cannot be borrowed.

Either it is yours, or it is not there.

The end result of believing, of having faith in a truth that you have not realized yourself.

It is hearsay.

Once you understand that it is not your truth, that it is not your experience, that it is not your realization, it starts slipping.

So what truth are you defending?

First you have to have the truth, only then you can defend it.

From what I have read, there were centers of religions in India, China, and Egypt that predated monotheism. Abraham founded monotheism; i.e., belief in one God. The prophets have confirmed the truth of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the three monotheistic faiths, through fulfilled prophecies.

belief in one God. The prophets have confirmed the truth of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the three monotheistic faiths, through fulfilled prophecies.

The God-oriented man lives in ignorance and believes that he knows.

If God created the world, and if he is behind nuclear weapons and the people who are creating them, then no effort on man’s part can prevent the destruction of the whole planet.

To give the creation of the world into the hands of a fictitious God is very dangerous.

    It makes us absolutely impotent.

    We cannot do anything.

God is simply the poverty of human consciousness.

God exists because you are not aware of yourself.

The moment you know yourself, there is no God and there is no need of any God.

There are over three hundred religions in the world and all are fighting with each other.

These are all created because of the concept of God, because they have all invented their own concepts.

What divides all the religions? Just small details, meaningless details, about their idea of God.

But if there is no God, all those differences disappear.

The truth is that God himself is a creation of man’s imagination.

When I say there is no God, I am not saying that I disbelieve in God; even for disbelief, God has to be.

I am simply saying there is no God, has never been – all definitions are inventions.

The highest form of Love is simply Being.

When consciousness becomes awakened, you are enlightened.

And those who have become totally conscious have been our highest flowering.

In them is the argument for our evolution.

All the people who have become fully conscious have all agreed on the point that consciousness is the stuff the universe is made of - different forms, different stages, but it is all consciousness.

It is not just a philosophy or an imaginary idea, because thousands of people have become totally conscious.

But the West has not known the experience of enlightenment.

It has created great artists, but unfortunately in the West there has been no atmosphere for enlightenment.

a scientific approach to the study of scripture, Hebrew and Jewish mysticism.

      not eastern mysticism.

      Neron.

What is the difference between Qabalah and eastern mysticism?

Is Qabalah consistent with monotheism, Christianity?

Is monotheism relevant beyond initiation at Tiphereth?

When the fall is reversed within the microcosm, and Malkuth is restored to Daarth, what is the experience for the adept ?

It is fully consistent with Awakening - 'No mind' of eastern mysticism!

scripture provided a "code" to the natural world.

'Only a man free of mind has the clarity to see things as they are.

The ultimate reality is beyond mind.

As always your ignorance of eastern mysticism, and authentic religiousness is bordering on pathological.

Interesting article. And it should be pointed out that Newton himself considered his religious writings to be far more important than his scientific work.

Most of the scientists I know wouldn't agree with that ;-)

Still, a brilliant and complex mind. We owe much to Sir Issac Newton.
