WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is reaping political benefits from the country's brighter economic mood. A new poll shows that Republicans and Democrats alike are increasingly saying the nation is heading in the right direction and most independents now approve the way he's addressing the nation's post-recession period.

But trouble could be ahead: Still-struggling Americans are fretting over rising gasoline prices. Just weeks before the summer travel season begins, the Associated Press-GfK survey finds pump prices rising in importance and most people unhappy with how Democratic president has handled the issue.

It's seemingly no coincidence that Obama this week is promoting the expansion of domestic oil and gas exploration and the development of new forms of energy.

It's his latest attempt to show that he, more than any of the Republican presidential contenders, knows that voters' pocketbooks remain pinched even as the economy improves overall. And on that question of empathy, solid majorities continue to view him as someone who "understands the problems of ordinary Americans" and "cares about people like you," the AP-GfK survey found.

There is evidence that the nation is becoming markedly more optimistic, and that Obama benefits from that attitude.

Thirty percent in the poll describe the economy as "good," a 15-point increase since December and the highest level since the AP-GfK poll first asked the question in 2009. Roughly the same share say the economy got better in the past month, while 18 percent said it got worse, the most positive read in over a year.

Looking ahead, four in 10 said they expect the economy to get better in the next year and a third said they think the number of unemployed people in the U.S. will decrease, the highest share on either question since last spring. A quarter of those surveyed said they expect the economy to get worse over the next 12 months, while 31 percent said it would stay the same, the poll found.

As optimism has risen, Obama has received a corresponding bump in his approval rating for handling the economy. Forty-eight percent now say they approve of how he's handling it, up 9 points from December.

Still, for some it's hard to sense an improvement — or give Obama credit for it — when any extra money is being gobbled up at the gasoline pump.

"I give him credit for trying to make improvements, but I don't believe it's had that much effect," said Michael Lee Real of Indianola, Iowa, a city water authority worker who counts himself as a Republican-leaning independent. The cost of gasoline is "one of the big things," says Real, 58. "It fluctuates so much, it makes it hard for me to budget my money."

Overall, seven of 10 respondents called gas prices deeply important, up 6 points from December. Those who view gas prices as "extremely important" rose 9 points, to nearly 39 percent.

The average cost of a gallon has risen 30 cents in that time, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Views on the president's handling of the issue are about the same as in December: Six in 10 respondents disapprove, including 36 percent who strongly feel that way, while 39 percent approve.

Presidents don't have a great deal of control over oil or gas prices, which now are being influenced by higher U.S. demand and tensions over Iran's nuclear program. But few factors generate as much interest and anxiety among Americans. The rise in prices, faced almost daily by voters, could undercut Obama's argument that he's strengthening the economy and making families more financially secure.

Though Obama's approval rating on the economy has climbed, his negative rating on handling gas prices is stagnant. Just 39 percent approve of what he's doing there, and 58 percent disapprove.

Republicans, locked in battle for the right to face Obama in the general election, expect gas prices to be a top issue by the time Americans set out on their summer vacations. The four vying for the GOP nomination already are warning of higher prices and are pushing for more drilling and relaxed regulations on domestic oil production. Some are talking dollars and cents: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is dangling the prospect of $2.50-a-gallon gas if he's elected; former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is warning of $5-a-gallon gas if he's not.

Generally, the public's approval of Obama has risen with the economy's climb from recession.

The unemployment rate dropped to 8.3 percent in January, the lowest level in nearly three years. The housing market is flashing signs of health ahead of the spring buying season, with mortgage rates still low, sales of previously occupied homes at their highest level since May 2010, and more first-time buyers making purchases.

The nation is far from a full recovery. Millions of Americans remain out of work. And Wall Street investors still worry over the details of Greece's economic bailout plan.

According to the poll, Obama's overall approval rating ticked upward slightly, from 44 percent in December to 49 percent now.

The 9-point approval increase for his handling of the economy comes from Democrats and independents, constituencies crucial to Obama's re-election hopes. Among Democrats, his approval on the economy has shot from 67 percent to 83 percent. Among independents, 49 percent now approve, up from 38 percent in December.

Obama also gained support among women during a period in which his administration seemed to stumble over whether religious employers should be forced to pay for contraception. In overall approval, Obama rebounded from 43 percent among women in December to 53 percent now, according to the survey.

And half of all adults now say Obama deserves to be re-elected, a 7-point rise from December that reverses a downward trend that had been in place since May.

More than eight in 10 Democrats say he should be elected to a second term, and half of all independents feel the same way, the survey found.

The AP-GfK poll was conducted Feb. 16-20 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and had a margin of error of 4.1 percent.

Makes a great case for energy diversity doesn't it?

What investor puts all his eggs in one basket? That is the height of risk taking.

What modicum of common sense wouldn't agree that energy is the LAST place we shouldn't be HEAVILY diversified?

It absolutely does. We desperately need to get off our oil addiction in favor of energy solutions that either a) we control, or b) are sourced by democratic allies.

The technology is out there - it just needs development.

KEEPING IT REAL!

People need to stop acting like the president can walk on water. I believe as of now, he's the best president to ever occupy 1600 Pennsylvania avenue, but he don't control the oil prices. If anyone have noticed, almost every time the presidential election comes around, suddenly the prices in gas spikes.

Speculation may be at the root of what's going on, because there always seems to be some ruckus going on in the middle east, and it's possible that big oil is trying to take advantage of that. If POTUS went down that road and discovered that was the case, then you can believe he will come up with a solution to that problem.

Republicans, locked in battle for the right to face Obama in the general election, expect gas prices to be a top issue by the time Americans set out on their summer vacations.

Thats why those clowns will always crash & burn. A topic of the election, well sure it will be - it always is. But a top issue? Rubbish, never in a zilion years. All that will happen is any candidate raising that will be seen as electioneering, and instantly get the focus on green issues. GOP do not want to be raising green issues voluntarily, as on balance Obama has the edge over them by a clear margin.

So dont talk about gas prices is the 101 message ..... but they will .... :)

It would be nice to see a discussion without ....tea-baggers-, and the likes, but some aren't able to simply discuss. It is my view that if Obama was in great position to be re-elected, the Democratic party or his bosses would not have him campaigning for 18 months. But, he did say... I need another term... I haven't been able to get it done...

It is my position that there isn't anything America can do to STOP this president from being re-elected, so why waste all of our time and money trying to make it appear that he is ACTUALLY supported- just have him work, do his job, quit the campaigning, ad re- elect him already!

There aren't strong opposing candidates, and this election is already a scam.

Richard, WA: practicality has nothing to do with it. it doesn't benefit them. the rest of the country doesn't matter.

Of course it benefits them. It helps them get votes and fires up the base. Whoever wins the nomination will then "refine" their position to garner independent votes while trying to scare people away from the other party.

This happens every election. It's just a matter of whose rhetoric sounds less like BS to you.

I wish this wasn't the reality. Ten years ago, I might have voted for McCain. He used to take a very moderate stance that was commendable. I was very impressed when he formed the bipartisan gang of 14 to break political stalemates. Then he swung hard right in the election to get the conservative base and lost me.

To be fair, I think that every candidate cares about this country, but caring about the country doesn't win elections. Both Romney and Gingrich tried to claim the high road with their rhetoric on the other Republican candidates and then realized the high road was a losing position. Better to get a read on each candidate's vision for the country and decide whether that's in line with what you want. All the Republican candidates have visions that I can't support. The mudslinging is meaningless.

It may look like an improving economy on the surface, but in all reality is is really a very fragile, false impersonation of one. If we were to take away all the dollars in way of taxpayer bailouts, stimulus projects, so called tax cuts, etc. etc. etc, all funded by taxpayer dollars, present and future, we would be broker than broke. This is just a temporary illusion of a functioning, improving economy. When the election is over you will see the end of the American economy as we have all known it. Sooner or later without denial it all has to catch up with us. When the government let's that happen is anybodies guess, but the longer they wait the more devastating it will be.

If the Tea-publicans can't run on the economy, they know that have no other cards to play but firing up the base w the culture wars again. What legitimate issues can these phonies run on? They have nothing! NO new or logical ideas, and NO factual arguments that make many feel compelled to votes against Obama, ESPECIALLY when the alternative to an effective incumbent President is a radical right lunatic that sounds like an American Taliban! Lately Reverend Santorum has been doing his best to be as extreme as possible, 'out crazy' Willard and Newt.....looks like the base are running for the exits at camp Willard in droves, and Santorum's ignorant followers are eating it up and just about ready to roll with their new favorite wacko thundering from his 17th century pulpit! The radical tea bagged right will have to hope that enough voters agree with them that we should legislate morality, keep waging the war on woman, and crack down on the rights of the 99% so the 1% can pay even lower taxes and become absolute dictators, the new super wealthy, ultra conservative ruling class. Tea-Publican foot draggers have done nothing but lie and obstruct, the all time RECORD LOW public disapproval poll numbers for this do-nothing Congress prove that most voters are really fed up and ready to dump them ASAP! They won't get any credit from most voters for the economy getting stronger. If these fraudsters even TRY to take any credit for any economic improvement, all President Obama has to do is remind the nation again what things were like in Jan 2008 after 8 years of W Bushes typical Republican policies, and his disastrous agenda of needless and unfunded wars, and tax cuts for the 1% turned the economy into the worst train wreck since the Great Depression! You can bet Pres Obama will show clips of Romney saying "let GM go bankrupt!" and bring back file footage of the self centered Tea-baggers during the debt ceiling crisis- its a matter of record, these nasty clowns were ready, willing, and able to collapse the entire worlds economy just to achieve their openly stated aim of "making Obama a one term President" ALL the GOP candidates, and this do-nothing Congress has done is show nothing but contempt and hostility for the middle class. These hypocrites have made one crazy statement after the other, all while falsely accusing President Obama of everything wrong with America, while doing NOTHING to work with him on solving problems their pathetic leader W Bush and his party is responsible for! The Fall TV ads have practically already written themselves, all the public has to do is VOTE to keep Pres Obama and toss out the insane Tea-baggers, and I have no doubt they will! We Dems will win by a landslide that all but erases the far right's 2010 election gains! I think the odds are pretty darn good in fact, that Pres Obama will win more electoral than he did in 2008! I for one can't wait to do my part and 'OCCUPY' that voting booth a few minutes this November!

That statement about the rising gas prices just had to come in, didn't it?

Richard, WA, and blue wolf, I agree with both of you and whoever else can see that diversity in energy capabilities is the only real answer to the problems we face at the pump.

Am I wrong, but my understanding is that purchasing gas at higher prices is the result of oil exploration and production, and market speculations. The oil producers don't want to end the drama.....after all these taxpayer-given subsidies that they get, at our expense. Do we honestly expect them to give up their billions of dollars of profit that they leech off our dependence on oil? Get real.

How is this the President's fault? Someone needs to cue me.

Every indicator of optimism is not even being discussed by the Republican candidates and I understand. They would commit political suicide if they agreed with the facts, so I'm not surprised that they want to stick their heads in the sand and campaign on social issues. Otherwise, they have no platforms to counteract what is showing to be positive for the President's agendas.

I'm not sure that even the mainstream Republican voters will allow them to get away with trying to detract from what is happening to this economy that speaks for positive growth.

How is Santorum's attempts to get the voters to hate the President and gain votes from this majority women's voter stratas when he is attacking our basic rights and needs? The man is too much to be believed. I refuse to even mention Romney and Gingrich.

I know a lot can happen between now and November, but unless there is a way for this unpopular Congress to throw a monkeywrench into this measure of success, then maybe there is a chance for more recovery.

Now, at the state levels, with all of those state worker layoffs, I can see where these majority Republican governors are probably the last hope of whoever runs against Obama.

Come now. The statement about gas prices shows how narrowminded and dependent we are on fossil fuel. It is surely a time for a change to something more efficient and cheaper in this economy. Way, way, way past time.

At this point in our economic recovery, Barack Obama is earning my vote......again.

Our policies towards Iran to intimidate them to complying with the UN mandates on nuclear weapons are causing the gas prices to rise. If Santorum had his way, we would be bombing Iran, destroying their ability to produce any oil. How high do you think gas would go then. The higher prices are simply the cost of doing the right thing to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to help bring democracy to other nations in the middle east. As for his green policies, he could be like the republicans and simply pretend that non-renewable resources are renewable and demand that we do nothing to try to end our dependence on fossil fuel and simply let future generations suffer from our irresponsibility.

Americans really needs to get past the delusion that the president or any politician can do anything that could lower gas prices in the short run. They also should realize that domestic oil production has zero impact on price at the pump. Oil prices are set on the world exchange and the oil companies will sell it to whomever is willing to pay the most. These corporations with the big tax breaks could care less about this country beyond what they can gouge out of the American consumers.

That's great news, other than the fact that there's an economic PAIN TRAIN headed Obama 2012's way, a train that's fueled by $4 a gallon gas. As long as the economy stays on track, President Obama is in fairly good shape for getting reelected. If there is a(nother) prolonged period of $4 a gallon gas and the economy tumbles (again), then he's in trouble. Problem is, that's not only likely, it's almost a best case scenario.

If the Middle East explodes (we won't even get into entirely possible WWIII scenarios) and gas prices double, President Obama will most likely be heading back to "Sweet Home, Chicago" (nice work on that rendering yesterday), unless the Republicans commit political suicide and select Santorum (in which case the President can bust out like James Brown and sing "I feel good!!") !!

Despite this, I shall, hope, pray, and vote for my country to succeed at every level......despite what happens in the Middle East........ without our involvment in another war.

Pessimism is the best and possibly only hope of those who say they are loyal Americans, yet can't seem to quite stay the course of optimism and hope for the country. Kinda selfish.....IMHO.

Feel like joining me in a little upbeat manner of speaking?

I don't WISH for any conflict, but I am a realist. With Iran's latest statements that they may attack nations they consider a threat even if they aren't attacked first and Rootin' Tootin' Putin wishing for and working to form a coalition between Russia, China and Iran, these are extremely dangerous times. Failing to mention that doesn't change it or make it go away !!

One more thing, if you can't recognize that BOTH of our political parties "left us in the lurch" then you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

        Echo,

I think we are not out of the woods yet. We still need to figure out how to put more money on American pockets. The 2% tax cut of your pay that we are getting on pay roll tax holiday extension is not going to be enough when gas prices will be almost 200% higher than they were 3 years ago. Not only is not going to be enough, the money is been taken out of our future Social Security fund which is expected to go broke in the not so distant future.

no one is saying we are. it would be refreshing however if one party was not making it their number one priority to defeat the president. nothing new, that's basically all they've done since he was sworn in. it leaves them little time to do the work of the people. that is what they get paid for.

I believe the price of gas is based on the price per barrel, where speculation has increased the price due to Iran.

It's sad that an attempt to limit speculation on energy has been push back by our beloved republicans because you know, the economy or average Americans are not in their best interests.

Some comment above was absolutely correct. The President does not have any more control over the gas prices than the rest of us. However, if we had a functioning congress, perhaps we could moderate such fluctuations. This becomes more difficult because we are not the only oil-hungry nation now.

My issue is that if gas prices keep rising, it would negate the SS tax cut that we just got therefore bankrupting social security faster than expected for no reason whatsoever...

Well I've watched everything that's be going on and Obama should be re-elected. The current improvements since GWB tried to run us into the ground is proof enough of that and he did it even with the GOP blocking his every move.

Not one GOP member has shown a touch of common sense since he was elected and for that they should pay. Pay out the arse to run and lose against him as the Public makes their collective voice heard and bounce them right out of Office and onto their ARSE.

The mood will change when $5 gas starts slowing the economy and causing inflation.

The president's stated energy policy includes increasing the price of gas to curb carbon emissions.

Correction: Barack Obama is benefiting from the left-wing media's failure to report his regime's manipulation of the numbers. There were 2.2 million more jobs available in '09 than there are today. If the same number of jobs existed, the real unemployment rate that's reported would be almost 9.8%. The dirty secret of the Obama regime is that they're fudging the numbers and their willing accomplices in the liberal media are letting them get away with it. This is the same media that was trying to convince us that we were in a recession during the Bush administration which averaged 5.2% unemployment.

Thank goodness the economy is doing so well. Otherwise, the 600 plus US Postal workers that are getting laid off, in my town, would be up a creek. Same goes for the thousands expected to be hacked by American. We're doing just fine. Most likely our booming economy is attributable to the low gas prices, exploding housing market, extremely open lending policies, and off the charts consumer confidence.

The article should read: Obama benefiting from the leftist news cartels. However there is still hope, most of the Amercian people are tired of the lies, from leftist news cartels. It is the Amercian people who tuned in, to which they choose, and we all know who the #1 news network is. Now Now, we must thank to the leftist news cartels, they and they along built Fox news, and doggonit lets not forget Al Gore, he invented the internet, so we can all talk about this.

Well, I guess not everyone shares in the euphoria known as Obamaland.

                      From USA Today/Gallup this morning:

"On Obama: Americans are more likely to say his presidency has been a failure than a success, 50%-44%. His favorable rating is 50%, higher than the GOP presidential contenders but lower than every nominee in the past five presidential contests at this point except Republican Bob Dole, who lost in 1996. A 51% majority say Obama is too liberal, and Americans are inclined to say they disagree with him on the issues that matter most to them. On the positive side, 58% say he has the personality and leadership qualities a president should have."

Gee, he's a swell and likeable guy. So is my 14 year old son that has Down syndrome. As much as I love him, I dont think you would want him as President.

                      On the other hand...
