CORAL GABLES — President Barack Obama is accusing his Republican presidential rivals of pitching old ideas, saying "what these other guys are peddling has not worked."

Speaking at a campaign fundraiser, Obama said the GOP candidates believe everyone should have to fend for themselves, a vision of America that Obama said was wrong. The president said his vision for the country was one where people are greater together than they are on their own.

Obama, who is an avid basketball fan, also lamented missing Thursday evening's basketball game between the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks.

Obama was speaking at the first of three campaign fundraisers in Florida. Tickets to his first event at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables cost $1,000 per ticket.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

President Barack Obama on Thursday assailed Republicans for what he described as a flawed and dishonest strategy for reducing gas prices, predicting his rivals would offer nothing but more drilling and political promises of $2-a-gallon gas. Said the president: "The American people aren't stupid."

"That's not a plan, especially since we're already drilling. That's a bumper sticker," Obama said in a stop at the University of Miami. "It's not a strategy to solve our energy challenge. That's a strategy to get politicians through an election. You know there are no quick fixes to this problem."

Obama spoke as gas has reached the highest price at the pump ever for this time of year: an average of $3.58 per gallon. White House advisers see it as a cyclical occurrence but knew Obama had to address the topic, one of deep concern to consumers and growing fodder for Republicans seeking to unseat Obama.

Obama said gas prices were "like a tax straight out of their paychecks." He promoted an energy agenda of oil, gas, wind, solar, nuclear and biofuel energy.

And he took aim at Republicans.

"You can bet that since it's an election year, they're already dusting off their three-point plans for $2 gas. I'll save you the suspense: Step one is to drill, step two is to drill, and step three is to keep drilling. ... We've heard the same thing for thirty years. Well, the American people aren't stupid."

Obama insisted there are no short-term solutions to high gas prices, and that anyone suggesting otherwise was not being honest. Still, he sought to offer something to anxious voters by saying he had ordered his administration to search for every possible area to help consumers in the coming months.

He sought to take credit for rising oil and gas production, a greater mix of energy sources and decreased consumption. Ahead of a fundraising blitz in the evening, he promoted an energy strategy that the administration says will reduce dependence on foreign oil in the long term.

Republicans have seized on the issue, citing Obama's decision to reject a permit for a cross-country oil pipeline as evidence of a misguided policy. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has warned of $5-a-gallon gas, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has said he could lower prices to $2.50 a gallon.

Obama aides worry that the rise in prices could reverse the country's economic gains and the president's improved political standing. A new Associated Press-GfK poll shows that though Obama's approval rating on the economy has climbed, 58 percent disapprove of what he's doing on gas prices.

White House officials point to increased oil production and decreased consumption as evidence that Obama's policies are working and will lead to greater energy independence in the long run. But they assert there is little Obama — or any president — can do to change the trajectory of prices now.

Despite more domestic oil and less consumption, "these prices are going up, and that tells you that there are other things beyond our control, like unrest in the Middle East or other factors like the growth of emerging countries such as China and India," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday.

To be sure, oil and gas production has increased during the Obama administration, though the trend began during the presidency of George W. Bush, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The increase has reversed a decline that began in 1986, and the agency projects that by 2020 oil production will reach a level not seen since 1994.

The agency also has reported a drop in petroleum consumption, caused by the economic downturn after the 2008 recession, new efficiencies and changes in consumer behavior.

While in Florida, Obama also plans to raise money, including a $30,000-a-person event at the Windermere, Fla., home of Dallas Mavericks guard Vince Carter. An avid basketball fan, Obama will attend a dinner Thursday at Carter's house just three days before the NBA All-Star Game in nearby Orlando.

Obama also will attend fundraising events at the Biltmore Hotel and at the Coral Gables home of lawyer Chris Korge, a top fundraiser for Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.

Last week, Obama took a three-day West Coast trip and raised about $8 million in eight campaign events.

Obama. In your socialist world view of America:

Are any welfare people attending your $1,000.00 dinner......or just servants.

Seems like only the rich are invited.......strange.

Um, it's called fund-raising for a reason. And FYI, it costs way more than a grand to have dinner with the President. Maybe not fair, but that's kind of how it works.

It works for Brazil.

President Barack Obama is accusing his Republican presidential rivals of pitching old ideas, saying "what these other guys are peddling has not worked."

    Oh THEY'RE pedaling alright.

All three of them, pedaling on the TRICYCLE with a squeaky wheel that the GOP platform has become.

Romney is on the left peddle....Santorum is on the right. Gingrich's fat ass is parked on the foot-stand in the back...reading a copy of playboy and dragging his feet.

Every time Romney says "banks....", Santorum shoves Romney to the left and shouts, "SEXXXXXXXX!"

Gingrich sits on the back, grinning at his magazine...and quietly says, "yeah...sex!"

Keep pedaling that tricycle boys....squeak, squeak....squeak.

He is only one telling the truth..the President cannot control the prices.....the Repubs will rehash the same old story..but when it comes right down to it there is nothing they could do....we can cause the glut by developmenting alternitive fuels...it is time to strike against big oil!!!

    The Grim Creeper

Oh, really? Perhaps you should read Dear Leader's own words:

Sen. OBAMA: I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing. But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more money into their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more quickly, particularly US automakers, then I think ultimately, we can come out of this stronger and have a more efficient energy policy than we do right now.

Or how about our "energy secretary's" comments:

“Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe,” Mr. Chu, who directs the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in September.

Perhaps you should listen to the Democrats, including Senator Obama, blaming George Bush for high gasoline prices.

And let's not forget candidate Obama's classic utterance:

"Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket."

The fact is, high energy prices are what Barack Obama wants -- despite all his 'class warrior' bullcrap.

    Grim--

I live in EUROPE...where gasoline is sold in liters for prices between 1.05 Euros per liter and 1.30 Euros per liter. With the current exchange rate of 1 Euro=.75 cents....

well that comes about to an average of $6 to $8 per gallon. PER GALLON.

None of the European countries are attempting to artificially keep gasoline prices low. There are lots of reasons for that, both politically and economically.

People here tend to purchase cars that get better gas mileage and their cars are much MUCH smaller. When our American cars are shipped over, they look like buildings on wheels by comparison.

Not only do people buy smaller cars here, but they use mass transit more often...particularly a very efficient train system.

People ride bikes more often too...which has the added benefit of better health as well.

As others here have tried to tell you, oil prices have gone UP...and that's happened everywhere...meaning it's NOT because of anything President Obama has done.

Seriously, crude oil is the PAST...we are PAST peak oil...it's a finite resource.

Instead of angrily living in the past and lamenting oil prices, perhaps we could recapture some of our American can-do attitude and work on leading the world in new energy technology.

    But, don't let me interrupt...

I just realized I typed the exchange rate backwards...

a dollar only buys 75 euro cents.

So, when something costs 3 euros...it costs us $4.

    sheesh.

Wind Power/Solar are not cost effective.

Hmm does Solyndra and a few other alternative companies up and went bankrupted with our nice tax dollars.

Ever see actual investors running to this types of companies to invest in? Nope... they don't touch 'em with a 10 foot pole. Why? They are not viable.

Spain tried to do this too with all of the solar and wind stuff which was heavy subsidized and it FAILED. Google that..and stop wasting bandwidth.

Republican ideas have worked very well, very well, indeed. Their class war has made them rich and always getting richer, even as their policies have hurt our economy, making less money available. The fascist partnerships with huge corporations and those who profit from them, many of the cabals and monopolies, have worked out well, too, providing Republicans with $Millions, if not $Billions, in bribes and corruption. Republicans have made our democracy nearly meaningless, and are now able to buy their way into power.

Republican policies have worked exceptionally well, for them. For the rest of us, and our nation, they have been a disaster. We are better off making this distinction.

"Much of the cost is made up by £1 billion of subsidies paid out for renewables every year, which ends up on taxpayer's fuel bills. “This is an industry at an early stage. It is not surprising costs are high,” he said. “But if we can help development and support this industry at an early stage that will help the costs to come down."
