Agree or Disagree: News of Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy is relevant to the presidential campaign

Republican John McCain's campaign revealed that the 17-year-old daughter of his presumptive running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is pregnant. Democrat Barack Obama says reporters should "back off" stories about people's families, saying such matters are not appropriate and not relevant to the race for president.

It has nothing to do with her abilities as a candidate. I wasn't going to vote for her & McCain anyway.

It's extremely important. It shows her true character and inability to lead. Compound that with her inexperience and she's one hott mess.

It shouldn't be national news. I understand, but that poor teenage girl deserves some privacy in a very difficult situation.

It's not the pregnancy or the girl. It's the extremely poor judgement and lack of vetting by Senator McCain.

The "hysteria" about this matter is taking attention away from the issues. Once again, a mountain out of a molehill......who hasn't been touched by this problem in their family, friends or acquaintances? Is this more important than the past histories of current politicians in our Congress?(Or their current activities?) Let's focus on the issues, not personal problems. After all, this is not a criminal act.

This is about his vetting process and her judgement as a woman and a mother. As a woman with five children, one who is a baby, and one who is pregnant and will be needing her mother now more than ever, she should have told John McCain, thanks but my family comes first before my country. She will have her time, but right now she needs to be a mother first. That isn't a conservative or liberal issue, that is a woman's issue. I think there are women all over the country thinking the same thing. She may be great but now is not the time for her or her family.

Sarah Palin's daughter is not relevant. Sarah Palin IS. What kind of a woman signs up to be vice president of the United States having a premature 4 month old with downs syndrome AND a 17 year old daughter who is pregnant? Yes, underage/unwed pregnancy happens far too often in this country. But do you have to exposure your child to the national scrutiny? No. What are their plans when the baby is born? If the McCain ticket wins, Mrs. Palin will be too busy running the country to help her child with this significant event. What kind of family value is this? Is her daughter going to live in DC or will she finish her senior year of high school in Alaska? How often will Mrs. Palin get home to really be there for her daughter? Mrs. Palin is selfish. At 44 she could easily have run in the 2012 election and protected her children from this onslaught, and been the mother her newborn deserves. Please do not tell me that Focus on the Family is in favor of a woman who is not first a mother, particularly when she had a choice to serve. McCain is a fool if he thinks this is not just the beginning of the nightmare for his campaign...

Marriage is the only safe place for sexual relations. There is no second best. Palin's daughter made mistakes, but she is choosing life for her and her baby. She, her mother, and the rest of her family are heroes. Their opponents are vicious deathmongers.

Explain to me how they are heroes? Unless I have lost my mind or lack the educational knowledge to know what the definition of what a hero is then I do not find this situation heroic. This family is heroic because they have chosen to force marriage upon two teenagers, which lack the concept of what marriage entails? They are a hero because their teenage daughter is pregnant? Which part is heroic? Many people chose to have babies but lack the parenting skills and abilities to care for those babies. So, having a baby does not make you a hero because if it did then all the irresponsible mothers would be heroes. Right?? We, taxpayers, would have no problems supporting all the mothers on welfare and SSI since this is such a heroic act? Remind me again how this is heroic??? I keep forgetting!

Why is everyone talking as if Palin is a single parent? This event brings out another aspect that is unavoidable for a woman running for office - her looks, her clothes, her attractiveness, her parenting skills, her "proper role." May sexism die a quick and painless death! The problem is the lack of adequate reproductive education and access to all types of birth control in this country. The daughter is not pregnant alone, either. ALL babies have two parents, so lets quit skewing that fact by focusing on the one carrying the baby. Let's make men responsbile for their behavior too.

I agree with Obama that this is not an issue of the upcoming race, but he would not be afforded the same understanding from the Republicans were the roles reversed. Obama is showing his true character by rising above the noise and making this campaign about big issues, not small character questions. There's a reason he, as unlikely a candidate as he is, is going to lead this nation out of our long national nightmare of failed conservative policy.

It is because someone looks for the negative all the time.

Isn't it about time we start looking for the positive in life here?

There is such a double standard out here.

                        Questions:

How many of us were virgins when we got married?
As parents how many talked to their children about sex?
How many of your children say mom and dad so and so are going to have sex tonight, see you later

Robert as an ex democrat I agree with you. For some reason the news-media has treating Obama as a night in shinning armour from the start. One would think he had the press in his back pocket. Leave the Palin girl alone!!! We live in a world that in way too many cases both parents have to work I realize Palin is a Politician but her daughter is not she is just a teenager. And before we want to all get too moral and high and mighty about this, lets all look into our own families backgrounds any premature babies in the family where the grandparents, great-grandparents or great-great-grandparents had not been married 9 months before the birth of their first child. Get real premarital sex has occurred more than we want to admit and believe me all of the preemies from years ago without the medical advances we now have would possibly not have lived. At least Gov. Palin is standing by her child and future grandchild and not sending her off to hide and give up the child. For that I say bravo, we can preach abstinence to our children but not force it on them.

I am a republican for birth control and this sucks. McCain Knew!!! and still moved forward. Like his twin, he has no brain, why can't we pick a smart one? He picked a governor as his vp, who only has 20 months experience as that governor, and spent 9 months of it pregnant. She and her daughter are obviously against birth control. Who at 43 years of age, already having four children, just voted Governor of a State, decides to go ahead and get pregnant. While she is pregnant, and trying to run a state, she obviously is not consulting her daughter, because low and behold, like mom like daughter.

Can you imagine your kid pregnant at sixteen, and then deciding to bring all of this to the national attention level. Couldn't Palin wait a few years and grow? Her kid has got to be a wreck, impacting her moms career. Let's face the facts Palin was enamored with the celebrity of it all, and didn't consider her family. Nice values........

I always like it when people state that they are a republican and then repeat the democrat talking points. BTW - I am a lifelong democrat (just as believable) that can't believe my party picked a community organizer that used dirty tricks and a crooked politician to get elected to the state office in Illinois, raised his children in a racist church for twenty years, had an unrepentant terrorist that actually participated in bombing the pentagon assist him in his early campaigning days, received favors from a convicted felon and then provided $14 million to the felon in state monies. I also can't believe they nominated a person that had only a little over 100 days in the US Senate before announcing he was running for president. A person that voted to kill babies that were born alive. A person that refuses to recognize the surge actually worked. While fellow democrats criticize Palin for having a 17 year old that did not listen to her advice (imagine that), they don't worry that Barack's mom had him when she was 18 (by a man that had what - 4 wives or more at one time?). Also, when Barack was 17 he did not have a baby, he was too busy snorting cocaine -- that really shows his ability to govern his own life. I am 100% in favor of putting on of Palin's alleged faults and skeletons in the open as long as all of Barack's and Biden's are also given equal billing -- of course that will be difficult since their list will be twice as long and deep.

You are so right. They put their families in extremely hurtful and embarrassing positions and Republicans took advantage in escalating the situation. Bloggers still refer to Clinton's indiscretions.

Having knowledge of how families are targeted, why in the world would Sarah Palin merrily step into THAT kind of spotlight is beyond me.

Palin did not provide enough guidance to her daughter to get birth control. The Republicans push abstinence, as if they can somehow ignore human nature. That shows that they do not live in the real world, but rather in one ruled by ideology and fantasy.

Palin herself had a child recently, and has a large family. In today's world, where we understand the problem of overpopulation and have ready access to birth control, Palin's choice shows that she is too lazy to take birth control or just doesn't care. She knew about the increased odds of having a child with Downs syndrome for an older mother, and despite already having several children, had a child with Downs syndrome. Ditto for her simplistic retro views on renewable energy development, lack of diplomatic relations with foreign countries, borrowing more money from foreign countries and adding to the explosive national debt.

I just don't think she (or McCain) is capable of separating the fantasy world of the ideological Republican with the real world.

Joe not taking or using birth control does not make you lazy!! Are you aware of the fact that there can be possible side effects for women on birth control especially after a certain age? Maybe you think her husband should have practiced abstinence then the child would not have been born with downs syndrome. Also I know adults with downs syndrome and my mother worked with them for years they are often nicer people than a lot of the "intelligent" people I know. You can give your child birth control, but can you force them to take it? How many people would condemn her for putting her daughter on birth control. We can teach abstinence but in the end if you are a parent you will know that even a four year old does not always do what we tell them to do let alone a 17 year old. Maybe you are in a fantasy world.

                                  Joe,

You are bordline communist. My sister-in-law came from Communist China where her parents had to give her away to her grandparents when her brother arrived. When her sister was born, her family was severly punished and pushed into a state of poverty that no American could even imagine.

When we start making decisions for others, we strip them of their right to be free.

Again, the Republicans are burned by their demogogery. This is just another instance of parochical households loosing control of their families. McCain screwing around on and leaving his first wife, Palin probably preaching Abstinence only and has a daughter too indoctrinated to use a condom. Or too suppressed. Their policies are bankrupt - and trail out to their ilk in many ways through all the examples of fraud, bribery, suppressed homosexuality, war crimes, etc.

This is a morally and intellectually bankrupt party - and the attempt to control, just keep exhibiting as a lack of control. This as compared to the concepts of education, guidance and thought - that actually has a better overall result for society.

You can bet if this happened to the Democratic party's VP nominee, the Republicans would be relentless in their attacks. Look at what happened to John Edwards and he has nothing to do with the Obama campaign! McCain made an enormous mistake and I sincerely hope the American public can see why. After the DNC, I can't imagine how voters could choose anyone but Obama/Biden anyway. Truly the dream team we've needed in this country after 8 years of big oil and the Bush administration.

What get me is that this family walked their pregnant daughter out into the spotlight COVERED UP with a blanket and baby Trig. Coincidence? NOT! They were hiding it. So now it's public??? What really gives? Babygate rumor appeasement? I see no logic in their methods and reasoning? And just WHEN did McCain know????

It's all McFossils fault. Palin should have been properly vetted. She brought her family into the public domain along with her stance on Abstinence (no contraception) Education to be taught in schools along with her other Flat Earth Society policies. Donors got screwed by this INCOMPETENT campaign and McCains bad judgement. What else may be COVERED/UNCOVERED down the road?????? And what happens when McCain once agin shoots from the hip over Russia/Georgia, Iran or Korea.

                                        This is INSANE!!!

                                        Obana/Biden.

Not only is the hypocrisy of Sarah Palin evident in this story, with her extreme pro-life values, homeschooling, abstinence only, and family values, but her willingness to accept the candidacy, knowing that her daughter would be dragged into the national spotlight is a very telling indictment of her attitude as a mother. She is apparently more interested in pursuing her ambition than in protecting Bristol's emotional health and reputation.

Add to this the abuse of her power as governor when she and her family tried incessantly to get her brother-in-law fired from the state police, and ended up firing the state superintendent of police for not yielding to her pressure.

Add to both the fact that she once appeared as governor before a group that advocates secession from the United States by Alaska, and she told them in her speech that she shares their vision and that Alaska is well suited to be a self-sufficient state.

I predict that other revelations will surface about this woman who is eminently unqualified to be a heart beat away from the presidency.

It's almost like having a crackpot who lives down the street as next in line to be president. And at 72 rears of age, the president could have a serious health problem, even die of a heart attack, cancer etc, at any time!

I think that Palin should NOT have taken the VP candidacy, knowing that her daughter would have to endure this type of publicity. SOMETIMES family should come 1st, Gov. Palin. Don't throw your family under the train for your own personal advancement. I think you've been away from your home too much.
As a working mother, I think that this job is far too big for a woman with such a young family. I think time spent with the baby and teens should be far more important to Gov Palin than a political office. She is young enough to find other chances for advancement after her family is properly raised.
By the way, why has the wedding not taken place???

I have no problem with the concept of "live and let live". I do have an issue with these holier than thou leaders telling us what is right and moral--unless of course it happens to them. How quickly the tune suddenly changes to accommodate their short comings. If teenage sex and pregnancy is now okay, what about gay marriage? Or do one of Palin's children need to come out of the closet before American Conservatives embrace this "social blight"? What hypocrisy!

This is about his vetting process and her judgement as a woman. If you have FIVE children, one who is a baby, and a pregnant teenager who is going to need her mother more than ever, how can you take a job that big!! This is not a conservative or liberal issue, this is a woman's issue. I think if you poll women 35+ all over the country you will find similar sentiments,. Her family needs her more than her country. She will have her time but now is not the time, not yet.

Poor judgement on both their behalfs.

Of course it matters. It illustrates what values she has imparted to her children. The vice president of the United States with a teenage daughter pregnant out of wedlock is a huge deal because it's a disgrace, and sadly a comment on our deteriorating society. What message does that send to our youth? It's says, "Premarital sex is OK...Unprotected sex is OK...Being pregnant and teenage is OK... Getting pregnant first, and later married is OK...".
