Which candidate has the best policy for solving America's economic problems?

The meltdown on Wall Street has brought the economy roaring back to the center of the presidential campaign, and the question for the final seven weeks of the general-election campaign is whether Barack Obama or John McCain can convince voters that he is capable of leading the country out of the morass.

The solution is not to go from the top and hope it "trickles" down. People are too greedy at the top to allow that. It's a dream.

When McCain did a direct quote of Herbert Hoover, saying that "the economy is fundamentally sound", he proved his economic credentials.

Lehman Bros., Merrill Lynch, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Countrywide Financial, Bear Stearns all collapsing. The average 401K has lost 20% in the last 12 months. And good old George W. Bush says it's just a" Free Market Adjustment" and McCain says the economy is sound.

Remember four years ago when Bush boasted about how many millions of Americans finally were realizing the American Dream of home ownership. Well that dream is a nightmare along with the Republican's idiotic economic platform. The lack of oversite that the Republican brought in is directly responsable for this mess. The creative types of loans never should have been allowed for people that really were not qualified for a loan or for a loan of the size they took out. Now all the tax payers and investors across the country pay the price.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder about the mental acuity of McCain for him to keep saying that. How many economic systems have to FAIL for him to acknowledge that the fundamentals of our economy are NOT strong right now? We are at a tipping point. We can decide to continue on the way we have been or we can realize that the last time our economy was sound was under a Democratic president. We've continually struggled under the Bush administration's push for de-regulation, huge tax breaks for the wealthiest of the US population, fewer opportunities for the US worker to pull themselves out of poverty, and complete government incompetence. And now we are faced with even MORE of these policies in McCain. He needs to stop saying the fundamentals are strong. Its asinine to say he was only talking about the US workers. No one is stupid enough to buy that malarkey. And now we're hearing about more incompetent cronyism in the Alaska government! Geez...these Republican REALLY think the American electorate is stupid. Its insulting. We aren't sheeple! Tell us the truth and how you're going to deal with it! Obama has. No way. No how. No McCain. No Palin!!!!!!

I would rather pay more taxes to help those in need than to support McCain/Palin. People should understand wen the ecomony is in a slow. You don't raise taxes. Not on any level. This whole thing with bailing out & stimulious packages for anyone is just not what we should do. Look it all boils down to this. If the dems wanted to help Americans they would leave more money on your checks. They don't instead they take it in the form of taxes and redistribute it. Try getting a job from a poor person. IT'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. Tax breaks create more jobs & keep jobs frm moving over seas. Fact company's don't move over seas because they like the socialest ways.THEY PICK COUNTRY'S THAT DON'T TAX THE LIFE OUT OF THEM. Wake up people! Kevin

Simple arithmetic and documentation of 8 years ago versus the state of our economy now. You don't have to be the brightest bulb to see the difference.

Ask yourself this: Are you better off now than you were 8 years ago? Most people will say no! We can't afford 4 more years of republican rule. It has almost destroyed the greatest nation in the free world.

I you like what has happened in the last 8 years, go ahead and vote for McCain. He talks out both sides of his mouth. He says he will fix it, what he doesn't say is that he helped create it!

It is time to look at the real issues and make an intelligent decision for the good of our country.

Obama will be stymied by Republicans if he gets into office. John McCain has an established track record of working with Democrats to hammer out agreements on controversial issues. This is what defines his differences with George Bush, and why he was dead in the water before taking on Sarah Palin. Many Republicans will never for give him for working with Ted Kennedy in particular, to say nothing of Feingold or Lieberman.

And BTW-Tell Republican Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon that Obama don't operate in a bipartian manner. He's running all kinds of ads telling everyone how he has worked with Obama on bipartisan legislation. And tell Senator for Oklahoma Tom Colburn, Senator Chuck Hagal from Nebraska, and Senator Dick Lugar that too while your at it because they are all Republican Senators talking about how they have worked with Obama in a bipartisan manner to pass important legislation-unless you don't think controlling nukes and government transparency are important.

McCain is strong when it comes to our troops and national security. He is not when it comes to the economy. When he made the statement that he feels we are "fundamentally strong financially" I almost fell out of my chair. Of course today, his tone has changed. We need a President that understands yes we need to be strong militarily but also strong at home first. That should be the next President's priority.

Wake up American and face the facts: the Republicans have shown their true nature over the past 8 years and it is UGLY. They care little for middle and working class families (other than as disposable workers to help them build their own wealth) and certainly do not care for the poor. It is scary to think that Americans might actually sign up for another 4-8 years of senseless killing, torture, lies, and economic disaster (not to mention loss of credibility with the rest of the world) by voting for McCain and Palin.

If you bother to take the time to learn the FACTS--Obama's plan will help lower and middle-income Americans. If you only listen to the sound bites on political ads, you are NOT informed enough to make a good decision. The last 8 years should have shown us all that sound bites can be manipulated and the overall message is inaccurate. The number of untruths from the McCain campaign that have been identified lately should concern all of us--we've already lived under that kind of leadership, and I for one am tired of it. Obama and Biden are knowledgeable, energetic, and have the hope that things can be changed. I want to feel hopeful about our President and our country, and I want change for most of Americans--not just the richest of the rich. We started 8 years ago with a Surplus in the budget of almost $3 BILLION, now it's a Deficit of nearly $4 BILLION! That is almost $7 BILLION this administration spent that WE DONT' HAVE! That's not even talking about the national deficit!

Come on people--you middle class and lower class incomes that are STRUGGLING--the burden of this has rested on us and the REPUBLICANS are the ones who caused it! Then they want to talk about fiscal responsibility??? WAKE UP!

              Kool Aid Drinker ALERT

Check the facts. Fannie and Freddie are CONTROLLED by the Democrats. 75% of the political contributions go to the DEMOCRATS. Fannie and Freddie were EXEMPTED from Sorbanes-Oxley. When the Bush administration proposed sending in Auditors in 2006, AFTER they FIRED BOTH CLINTON APPOINTED CEO's, Barney Frank and other KEY Democrats BLOCKED the move.

The Chose One received LARGE Contributions from BOTH Fannie and Freddie (well over $250K).

Therefore, BEWARE of the hand wringing...

Lest we FORGET, it was Alan (I am an ORACLE like GORE) Greenspan that created the EASY CREDIT situation UNDER Slick Willie....The Bush Administration inherited Greenspan and the HIDDEN recession (Clinton white house juggled the Commerce and Treasury data so that Clinton's BUBBLE looked OK). Then, after Osama (rhymes with Obama) attacked, we really went into a tailspin. We were ALMOST out when Katrina and the EASY MONEY CROWD (Democrats in Congres) TOOK OVER.

Do the Republicans own a piece of this sure...but the MAJOR blame lies with the Democrats...

OH...BTW, what about ETHICS REFORM..Ms. Pelosi's Mantra. Well, Charlie Rangel is STILL chairman of the House Ways and Means...which means he is trying to find a WAY OUT while still hanging onto all his Ill GOTTEN MEANS...

The end is near...The Chosen One can NO LONGER Walk on Water...

Look at the Polls....Look at the people who are putting their MONEY on the Presidential Futures Exchange. Remember the old saying....follow the money....well the SMART money is NOW on McCain.

enought of the Bush/McSame economics. In times like this the last person we need is someone who says he know nothing about economics and picks Phil Gramm as his economic advisor. The same Phil Gramm who is a lobbyist for banking and because of his moves in the senate made this all possible. The Republican's caused this mess and are trying to hide behind the smoke screens they keep throwing to divert the country. I only hope the middle class is finally going to wake up and tell them all goodbye.

To "Wondering in Central FL" and "GBD-001":

You are victims of drinking the KoolAid and as a result have missed the facts of Obama and McCains tax policies. It's actually pretty simple. Under Obama's plan, if you make more than $603k per year, you will in fact have a tax increase (but only to the levels in place under Clinton). If you make less than 603k, you will receive a tax cut. In fact, if you make less than 111k, the TAX CUT will actually be larger under Obama than under McCain. To see an estimate of how much you'll save under Obama's plan, go to:

Who receives McCain's largest tax cuts? Those making more than $2.87 million. Followed by those making more than 603k, followed by those making more than $160k, followed by those making more than 111k, followed by...get the picture? Who receives the smallest cuts under McCain? The 60% of Americans making less than $66k.

Don't take my word for it. Do some actual research and quit listening to Limbaugh and Hannity. THINK PEOPLE! THINK!!!

What happened yesterday should leave no one any doubt that this is the "Bush economy". The fact is he has been in power for 7 years and look what the American people are facing: high unemployment, failing banks or banks which can not guarantee the safety of your money (including if it is less than 100,000).

And what is the reaction of John McCain (Republican), "The Fundamentals of the Economy is still strong".

The fact is under the Bush Administration has FAILED the American people, and it is about time we wake up and face the fact our country is in crisis and will decline into obscurity if we dont act.

You know Rome was once a great nation. But due to a failed economic system, over-extension of the military, the Grand Rome is no more.

In fact, independent groups such as the Tax Policy Center have concluded that four out of five U.S. households would receive tax cuts under Obama's proposals. Read the facts and stop blindly drinking the cool-aid of the McCain/Palin campaign. It is tainted with Lies and Deception.

Its so interesting that the folks that favor McCain are so anti-tax increase. Noone wants to pay higher taxes. But after 8 years of the Bush mess which includes a war of choice and tax breaks for the wealthiest, how do they expect this country to pay for any of this without some sacrifice? I know...go shopping. No one wants their sons to join the military, no one wants to contribute more in taxes...but the Bush doctrine is expensive in blood and treasure. I say shut up or put up...

Neither one of these fools in the demopublican party has a clue about how to fix Amerika. The ONLY way is to get government totally out of the market and cut back the entire government to almost nothing. Getting rid of the Federal Reserve would be the very first thing this country needs. We desperately need a sound monetary policy, not more BS to appease the sheep.

First of all McCain said that the economy is in very bad shape and there is trouble ahead but our capitalist institutions and capitalist way of life is fundamentally sound but the "Obominations" took a piece of his words out of context I would urge you to be careful of disingenuous bias mind control. Based on what truth or what possible reason does anyone support Obama? McCain is the far better man in every category that a president is to be. Obama is the wrong man at the wrong time, a tremendously weak candidate and continually demonstrates his poor judgement and indecisiveness on major issues even look at his voting record and the multiple failed projects he was involved in as "Community Organizer" . He has every possible advantage including: the economy, gas prices, war, voting registration and McCain is still leading. Democrats are running a very bad horse in this race and the American people are not all fools

McCain's economic policies are a mixture of long discredited trickle down economic theories (aka voodoo economics which amounts to nothing more than pandering to the moneyed class while trying to convince the middle and working classes that the wealthy should receive special consideration) manifested in unfunded tax cuts and deregulation (it didn't work in the 20s, and clearly wasn't working in the mortgage and upstream finance markets...but don't let anything like evidence dissuade you from an emotionally satisfying ideology).

If you're wealthy, and have absolutely no concern whatsoever for any human being who can't obtain membership to one of your country clubs, vote for McCain.

If you're in the middle and working class and want to watch the value of your retirement savings and your home erode, your bank(s) teeter on the edge of insolvency or actually fail, energy prices (and therefore all prices on consumer goods to increase), then vote for McCain.

If you are in the working class, and you want to be ignored altogether, or treated with thinly veiled contempt ( or in the case of Barbara Bush, naked disdain), by your government, then vote for McCain.

If you think that the economy is in fine shape, has improved in the last eight (8) years, and is generally headed in the right direction, vote McCain.

If the republicans win this election this country will continue down the wrong economic path. They have only two interests money and power and if you think otherwise you have been brainwashed. This election is all about restoring dignity, upholding the constitution, and making this country great again for the average person. Mcsame and Palin are probably the very worst ticket this country has ever had. He is old as dirt with absolutely no idea how to help the average family. Palin has absolutely nothing in her expierence or education that would benefit this country. McCain picking her just shows his decision making is geared to win the white house anyway he can. I am in the credit card industry and i can tell you all it is going to get worse and the republicans have no answers. If people in this country do not change this divide and conquer Rove policy it wont matter who we elect and we all will be speaking Chinese. How can the American public be so stupid is beyond me.
