I would like to see someone express an opinion on the missing person in this debate - the Father. There are many of us who would like to have our daughter or son but are denied that right. Why? After all it did take both of us to produce our child and I as the father should have the same rights as the mother, especially when it comes to the fact I would like to raise my daughter or son.
The father is certainly important here when it is possible. I believe he should be consulted when the relationship is one that allows that. However, remember that many times the father is absent, unknown, a rapist or the baby is the result of incest. In those cases, he has no rights whatsoever. And, remember that the use of a condom or birth control is always appropriate where pregnancy would bring these horrible decisions into your life.
You are not the one to go through ten months of trauma and body alterations sir, and certainly do not pay the medical bills for giving birth, please. It is not your body and therefore, not your choice, your perspective while sympathetic, is selfish.
On the last Sunday before the election in 2004, the priest in our small northern IN town at each Mass actually told parishioners who they had to vote for (Bush) or they would be "out of communion with the church". I was shocked that in my 55 years I had never heard such a comment at Mass and never thought I'd see the day when a priest would tell people who they had to vote for! I value my citizenship and right to vote and would NEVER let a priest hijack my vote. I'm sure many people did allow their vote to be hijacked for one issue and a threat from a priest and many of them are regretting it now. Look where this country is at after 8 years of Bush and it will get worse before better.
Sorry Jill.......I'm tired of everybody harping on the last 8 years. How about the last 2? You have a majority Democratic Congress in there and they have done more damage in the last two years and counting, that Bush has done his entire term. We lost jobs to overseas companies in the Clinton Administration. Are you kidding me? Do your research. As for highjacking your vote, don't you have free will? Did the preist stand over you at the voting booth? As for your baby killers, Hussein, Pelosi and Biden..birds of a feather. With your special catholic upbringing, then you know in order for anthing to be a sin...you must contiously know it is wrong and do it anyway. So which would be the more grave sin? The actual abortion or knowing that abortion is murder and supporting it anyway, so that there can be many, many more? Why don't you, Pelosi and Biden have a discussion about that.
Mary... you must be one of those women who follows every word her neo-conservative husband says. Keep your beliefs out of my life.
And as for the last 8 years... Makes me sick that no republican will take any responsibility. Everybody know the congress and the senate stopped working with the president and the GOP. Uh yeah because they were lying to Americans for personal gains!!!!!
If you were to kill an unborn child - that would be a mortal sin.
If you were to vote/support a political candidate who would directly enable, through policies, SC nominations and legislative agendas, abortion - when an alternative candidate who is pro-life is available, then you would be materially coorperating in an intrinsic evil and that would also be a mortal sin.
Vote any way you want, but don't present yourself for communion without first seeking reconciliation. Thats not hijacking your vote, that's being a responsible shepherd of the faith!
HW
McCain has already said that Roe v. Wade would not be overturned. Palin's stance on abortion is her own opinion...not policy. And Obama, Pelosi and Biden could care less about the unborn's rights. The moral guidelines for abortion have been ripped away, just like the babies at 6, 7, 8, months of pregnancy. I am so glad that the bishops came out against that idiot Biden and that crackpot Pelosi. Dear Lord....does anyone realize that if something happened to the President and the VP, no matter who they may be, that half-witted, crazy woman Pelosi would automatically become president...Holy Crap!!!!
Which is why the President, V.P., and Secretary of State are never in the same place at the same time. duh...... That's not by coincidence. It's by strategy for protection.
I am a traditional Catholic female and a stay-at-home mom. Regardless of my stats, I am NOT a one issue voter. I think to vote on only one issue is narrow minded and, honestly, just plain stupid. I don't understand why we, Americans, only react to end results, without looking at the actual causes. Maybe if we had better education, healthcare and economic situation, women wouldn't be getting pregnant and having abortions. If we deal with the causes, we will affect the results. That is why this TRADITIONAL CATHOLIC FEMALE IS VOTING FOR OBAMA in November. I have a head with a brain in it and I will be darned if some Bishop or Priest will try to influence my vote on this single issue. Religion should stay out of politics. We are old enough and smart enough to decide for ourselves.
Amen! If only more people would decide for themselves, this country would be a much better place!
Please help me understand how a better economy, better education and better healthcare is going to reduce the number of pregnancies and the number of abortions.
What?
Are people sitting around bored because they're injured, unemployed and can't afford to go to the movies, so they decide to have sex? Then they get pregnant and decide to have an abortion - remember they're poor so their abortion is covered by us taxpayers - whether "personally opposed" or not.
Do not claim to be a traditional catholic female if you don't understand the Bishop's and Pope's teachings, and especially if you do understand them, but don't agree. That's not Catholic - maybe its your own religion.
HW
You, Sir, are blinded by your faith and leaving falsehoods all over this commentary.
Fact: Abortions are NOT paid for by tax dollars, ever. Even women in the military who have been raped by the enemy must pay for their own abortion if they choose to have one.
Hey, it's her choice. Let her pay for it.
I think abortion is an issue, but seeing the economy grow is more important. Americans voted for change 2 years ago and they got it.
Fact: unemployment up
Fact: Manufacturing down
Fact: Gas prices up from $2.16 to over $4.00 a gallon.
Fact: Stock market has fell from an alltime high over 14000 to under 11000.
Fact: Clothing, food, and all other comodities have jumped much higher.
Fact: In the 8 years under Bush, Obama became a multi-millionaire. Stout economy.
Fact: Obama's top financial advisors got over $170000000 from Fannie and Freddie on a exit profit. Is this why it is in the shape it is today?
Fact: McCain opposed the government buyin for Fannie and Freddie, stating on record it would cause both to collapse. NO THANK YOU FOR THAT KIND OF CHANGE. IT WAS BAD FOR US AND THE ECONOMY.
MCCAIN/PALIN 2008
FACT: The Republicans have been in charge and caused this mess
FACT: 6 years of no oversight
FACT: McCain voted for deregulation
FACT: 7 years of the Bush admin and Republican "let's get our buddies rich" thinking has put us where we are!
FACT: Repubs can't win on the econmy.......go back to Bin Laden is going to come and kill us all....and Saddam had WMDs!
Sorry to disappoint you, but it's your Democratic Congress that has been in power for at least the last two years..Do the time line bud....high gas prices. plummeting housing market, no jobs...(Bill Clinton sent all the jobs overseas) idiot. I was a Democrat...I did the homework...that's why I'm voting McCain
Hmmmm....so the first six..what they don't count? No oversight....and this is somehow the Dems fault? Might I add that the Dems only have the majority in the House...not the Senate....it's actually tied in the Senate since Lieberman crossed over. Might I add that Bush vetoed quite a few bills. Might I add the Republicans vowed in 2006 when they lost seats that they would go out of their way to make Congress look bad so people like you would only see that last two years...and not the previous six!
Considering the explosive rise in oil and therefore gas prices how a candidate feels regarding abortion is the least of my worries. With both gas prices and food prices shooting through the roof recently and now that we have seen the last of $30 a barrel oil from just a few years ago my priorities are with my own survival not a presidential candidates stance on abortion. If they happen to see the same way I do on the issue then thats certainly a good thing but right now thats not the issue thats going to make or break my vote one way or the other come November.
So many are saying it's a "personal" issue and therefore should be legal. Do these same people also believe there should be no laws or consequences for those who have committed a murder? This is the very same thing. Fact: If a person were to punch, kick, etc. a pregnant woman in the stomach and the baby dies that person would be convicted of murder. Why then if it is the woman's "choice" should the consequence be any different?
This is a huge issue that needs attention!
Because it 's her choice between her and her God. I wish you all would care about the living as much as you care about the unborn.
Abortion is not destroying our country but the policies of the Republican party is! The stock market dropped almost 500 points today, we're in 2 wars, people can't keep their homes, we owe China $1 trillion dollars and you still vote for McCain and the Republicans. Learn to speak Chinese cause you'll need to and by the way you can only have one child in China. Where's your outrage. Who knows how many babies are being killed.
I am a staunch Roman Catholic who will be voting for Obama. I disagree with his view on abortion totally. However, I cannot impose my beliefs on others. I am voting for Obama for other issues,i.e., health care, education, economy, etc. I believe if the only reason a Catholic voted for a candidate because of the abortion stance (Obama) they would have a problem with the Church teaching.
Ms. Palin does not believe in abortion except in cases to save the life of the mother. This is not a teaching of the Church. As far as the pregnancy of her teenage daughter, the Church also teaches sex is a sin outside of marriage.
The Republicans would do far more harm than good. John McCain was ready recently to choose a candiate Joe Lieberman and/or Tom Ridge both PRO CHOICE...HELLO.....what should we as Catholics think about that.
Abortion is a terrbile act, Catholic or not. Barack Obama has said on more than occasion that hd would like to see a much lower number of abortions. Another teaching would be"hatd the sin but love the sinner." What happened to that? I pray every day for the weomen who are planning an abortion to find a different option. But I cannot tell another person what to do unless my opinion is required. The government should not either. Barack Obama was raised in another Christian faith so I suspect their take on abortion issues may difer from ours.
Thank you for hearing me out. I hope other Catholics may try to see it in a little different light.
"I cannot impose my beliefs on others". That's the dumbest thing I've heard - from you and from Joe Biden.
Then don't vote! I don't want your beliefs on the economy imposed on me or anyone else either. I don't want your beliefs on healthcare imposed on me or anyone else either. Same goes for gun control, tax code, supreme court justice nominations, etc.
I wonder what you mean by "staunch Roman Catholic". If you choose to pick and choose your tenets of the faith - that's not Catholic. If you choose to smile when your Bishops and the Pope articulate what responsible citizenship means in the public square, but don't consider its implications on your obligations as a citizen - then how do you reconcile the "staunch Roman Catholic" part?
HW
I agree with Joe Biden and Margaret Palumbo. We are NOT IRAN, religion is not the ruler of our democracy. I am Catholic and I understand that not everyone agrees with my views. I HATE Christians that go up to non-Christians and tell them they are going to Hell since they don't believe in Christ. Christ said not to judge others. If you want to believe what you believe, then do so, just don't try to tell me that I am wrong.
Actually "HW" the Church does tell us to respect the government's laws. The Pope also said voting on SINGLE ISSUES is WRONG!!!!!! The Pope has added torture, excessive wealth and pollution as SINS this year, but what about Republicans on that?
Hey, I used to be a Republican until I realized Republicans are NEVER going to change Roe vs Wade since if they did, they would have NOTHING to run on. They won't, don't you get it, it is a WEDGE issue. So voting on single issues is insane.
Abortion is an individual right. I do not believe that abortion should be used as a form of birth control. But each person must live with the choices they make. And yes I am voting for Barack Obama because change is what we need and not the same old politics that I know we will have if the 70 something McCain is voted in. And look at it McCain- "Cain". The rich gets richer, and the middle class and poor gets taxed and poorer. And lose their homes, war, egos, and total consideration for their peers and constituents.
WHY IS IT THAT WHEN YOU POST ON MSNBC, IF IT'S NOT THEIR WAY OF THINKING, YOU CAN'T POST? MORE LIBERAL CENSORSHIP? OR JUST POOR QUALITY REPORTING?
I too have experienced this problem. When I post opinions which are opposite of Obama or liberal views, they just miraculously don't appear. Quite interesting and convenient. But don't forget, bibles in Communist China are banned, but the Word still goes forth.
WE AS TAX PAYER'S HAVE ENOUGH UN WANTED CHILDREN WE ARE PAYING FOR ADD THAT TO 18 OR 21 YEARS ON THE DOLE FOR THE TAX PAYER
WE NEED TO TAKE THE HABITUAL BABY FACTORY WOMEN ON THE DOLE TO US AND THE STATE AND HAVE THEM TIED OFF WITH THEIR 2ND BIRTH ON THE STATE DOLE , THEY KEEP HAVING THEM SO THEY CAN BE ON STATE WELFARE AND SUBSISTENCE FOR EVER
I would like to see someone express an opinion on the missing person in this debate - the Father. There are many of us who would like to keep our daughter or son and raise her/him. Why are we denied this right? After all it take both of us to produce our daughter or son. We should have the same right as the mother especially when it comes to keeping the child.
The moral issue on abortion is what divides us. People with high moral standards are against abortion under most circumstances.
The scientific issue with abortion is it take a human life. Under our constitution some human lives are not protected.
You have the chance to choose to get pregnant. Once you are you do not have the right to KILL the baby. Any person who can't protect the most innocent will never be able to make the right decisions for me and my family. To protect the family vote McCain
a lot of people miss the point. The Gov should not be funding abortion clinics or orgs that give advise on abortions. Tax payers money should go to other services - not abortion it is not a right. and if you think obama is going to help the economy think again. What happens when you tax corporations - they pass it on to the consumer. Econ 101 - also think who pays for payroll taxes - corps and you! A tax on a person or business is a tax on the people - wake up people - how is obama going to pay for health care for everyone - look at Canada's system - why do they come down here? how is he going to pay for sending everyone to college? if they do then I want my money back for the loans and working two jobs and at night to get my degree. back to the main topic - talk about a womans right - over 50% of babies are female so what happens to the right of the woman in the womb? live begins a conception - proven scientific fact - not above my pay grade. A beating heart, movement, expression on the faces - there might be some special instances but we are out of control..........
Betsy said: The issue is not really about abortion; it is about whether or not to criminalize abortion. I do not believe in abortion, but it has been common for centuries. Criminalizing it will not get rid of it, but only drive it underground.
By that logic, all these statements might also be true...
-The issue is not really about murder; it is about whether or not to criminalize murder. I do not believe in murder, but it has been common for centuries. Criminalizing it will not get rid of it, but only drive it underground.
-The issue is not really about slavery; it is about whether or not to criminalize slavery. I do not believe in slavery, but it has been common for centuries. Criminalizing it will not get rid of it, but only drive it underground.
-The issue is not really about abuse; it is about whether or not to criminalize abuse. I do not believe in abuse, but it has been common for centuries. Criminalizing it will not get rid of it, but only drive it underground.
-The issue is not really about rape; it is about whether or not to criminalize rape. I do not believe in rape, but it has been common for centuries. Criminalizing it will not get rid of it, but only drive it underground.
Sounds silly, doesn't it!
Law is more than control of behavior. It is also a statement of what we believe to be right and wrong: what we find acceptable to our society. Why is it that abortion should get a free pass on this issue? On what grounds to we withold compassion for the baby, as we pour it out for a murder victum, a slave, and an abused child? We dispensed with "might makes right" when this country was formed, but it seems to be the principle behind pro-choice.
As a life long Catholic, I see no conflict in voting for Obama/Biden. They may not be anti-abortion as I would like but at least they understand social justice teachings. Besides, one cannot reasonably outlaw abortion if you refuse to support programs that help those children and their mothers pull themselves up (such as Medicaid, WIC, Pell Grants, etc.) like the GOP does. Perhaps if we work on fixing the underlying CAUSE of abortions we may reach a point where it is sensible to rid ourselves of this barbaric practice. (Because I am sorry "pro-choice" people, but in roughly 95% of the cases of abortions a "choice" made when that baby was conceived and people need to learn to take responsibility for THAT choice once they create that life.)
You know that it might just be that GOD will reward us (USA) if we take care of getting rid of the killing of babies, and other such terrible things. Then all good things will fall into place. Someone will say that is a stupid approach, however, some answers are the simple ones.
This is very nice and all, but I clicked on the cosmic light show.
And regarding what should be a non-issue, keep the government out of my home and my head - the right to choose whether or not to have a child has been legally granted to American women. Amazing that we had to "grant" this right. Let's move on and discuss things that are much more urgent - the economy, the fiasco in the middle east, our loss of face throughout the world due the current "regime's" cow boy politics (shoot first, don't ask questions at all), the energy crisis, the environment...and the list goes on.
Amazing we had to "grant this?" Wow! It's not like getting the right to vote! It's KILLING a child! No one should have the right to kill another being! It's amazing how women have become so detached that they can feel that it's their "right" to end a pregnancy. It was your "right" to open your legs! And your "right" to keep them closed! And if by chance your "rights" were violated and there is a circumstance such as rape, than it is your "right" to give the child up for adoption. I lost all respect for our government and for many women over this issue. It used to be that women were strong and while they might not be able to vote they knew right from wrong. Women now are cowards. "Oh I chose to have sex but now I don't want to deal with raising a baby!" or "oh my baby isn't going to be PERFECT so I will kill it and try again!" I mean, wow!! These women pretty soon need to lose their "right" to have children. Rather than abortions why don't we remove those pesky ovaries from women too cowardly to deal with the consequences of their actions! Sorry if I offend, but holy crap some people are idiots!!!!
The religious right is correct; the Constitution does not guarantee one's right to an abortion. However, the First Amendment does guarantee that abortion is not outlawed. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." Plain and simple.
