But that would be honorable. Criminals don't have a lot of honor to begin with.

I can't believe a convicted felon is allowed to serve in Congress. That law should be changed, making this question moot.

As the first vote, and a registered Democrat, my vote should be no surprise, however, since I find myself agreeing with the Prisoner of Brain and Hokey Mom, it is worthy of notice.  However, if he successfully appeals, he can run for the next seat.  If not, sing him a chorus of "Jail to the Chief" and send him up the river.  I have absolutely NO SYMPATHY for this kind of thing, on either side of the aisle.

Perhaps some of Stevens' past legislation should be called into question, too?

I'd like someone to take a hard look at Stevens' role in the formation of Alaska Native Corporations (ANC's). Some ANC's are BILLION dollar companies, but they are, by law, able to compete as special SMALL BUSINESSES for HUGE FEDERAL contracts. Some of these ANCs have donated BIG, BIG dollars to the campaigns of Stevens' and others to get and keep these special rules for Alaskan Native Corporations. ITS NOT FAIR OR RIGHT!!!

What I don't understand is why he isn't automatically disqualified from the senate race, since he is a convicted felon!!?? It could be similar to the Marion Berry case, many years ago where he was caught getting high on crack and then re-elected!!!  What an example for our children of demo "crass" y in action.

Appalin is now a rogue running mate and he even can't shut her up. She has zero common sense, something that is very scary. Most people get one or both in life, common sense and a brain...she has neither.

McCain is known for being something of a womanizer.  Maybe since he announced her as his "soul mate" (is this really true? omg) he has designs on her for something other than a political partner, esp given the fact that he calls his own wife the "c" word.I think, if McCain and Palin ended up together, they would be doing Cindy a big favor and get what they each deserved.  Two mavericks are better than one.

With regard to the question at hand, my answer is yes. But he will not be voted in again if allowed to remain in term, regardless...

Stevens is the 7th convicted felon politician of Alaska in the last year, ALL OF THEM REPUBLICAN, all with their hand in the cookie jar.  The FBI has been cleaning house, and I love it. Coming soon: house representative Don Young.

The fact of the matter is, if you run as a republican here, for the most part you win. Palin won because she was up against a complete scumbag that everyone hated(primary), then since she was the republican canidate, she won. Actually, Alaskans are Republican enough and contrary enough to re-elect Stevens.  If he subsequently resigns, Gov. Palin would then be responsible for appointing his replacement.  What I'm not sure of, however, is if this appointment would only be temporary until a new election can be arranged or if it would last for the entire six-year term.

So, what are the ulterior motives of Republicans calling for Stevens to resign and/or quit the race when it would appear that it would be to their advantage for him to remain?  It would be very un-Republican of them if they did not have an ulterior motive, so I'm probably just missing it.

The Governor can't replace him...  I see so many people harping on this...  Alaska State Law does not gant the Governor the power to appoint a replacement.  Instead it specifies that a Special Election is held to fill the vacancy of the remaining term.

I think it is the height of hypocrisy to ask him to step down, but when the report on Sarah Palin came out, McCain tryed to explain it away.  Ethics is Ethics.  You can not denounce one and not the other.  I know this one went to court and the report on Palin was part of an investigation.  ETHICS ARE ETHICS.  If you ask one to step down, SHE NEEDS TO STEP ASIDE AS WELL.

How could he serve his constituents from prison ? Hopefully the people of Alaska would not stand for that, and will vote him out of office. I wounder how many other crimes he has committed and not got caught? At his age I am sure this is not the first. The republican party needs to take their lumps in this election and sit back and look at how and why they got there. This is not the party of Honest Abe Lincoln. I am fed up with the Republican party and will be voting for Obama and Democratic reps.

I agree with you Rod. The fact that he can casually forget to mention $250,000 in renovations is awfully large. Psychology 101 will tell you that a person who misuses power starts out small and then starts using diamonds as mosaic tiles in his bathroom or whatever the heck he did with all that money.

I strongly believe that Senator Stevens should resign his post immediately.  Part of me feels badly for this man who has served his state and this nation for forty years.  He is probably one of the most popular senators the U.S. has ever had.  However, what he was convicted of is very serious and he no longer has a legitimate reason to remain in government.  I hope he is spared jail as I don't believe that would be punishment he deserves.  However, he must go. I'm disappointed that his fellow Alaskan, Ms. Palin, didn'encourage him to resign as Mr. McCain did.

Hey, people, remember the "Amistad"? John Quincy Adams, House of Representatives. Anybody know how old he was when he was involved in clearing and freeing all those people, before the Civil War? He actually died in the House of Representatives, 1848, I believe it was at age 81.

I think we could expend a little compassion for Sen. Stevens. I am sure he has done some helpful things over all his years of service. Not condoning the $250,000, don't get me wrong, but how does that measure up to the $150,000 spent on Palin for what??? hmmmmmmmmmm some clothes, makeup, hair, etc. and then it all disappears?? At least you can see the results of Ted's mistake and it is inheritable to boot.

Stevens will fight to retain his seat so that Gov. Palin can appoint herself to his seat when he goes to prison. The corporatists who came to power in 2001 (often referred to as neo-conservatives) are grooming Palin to be their rubber stamp president at some point in the future. That is the reason she was picked as McCain's running mate. Remember, they have a huge corporate war machine in place that puts billions of taxpayer dollars into their coffres every month. They know the country would not trust either Guliani or Romney, so they had to find someone who can woo the populace. They know she won't win this time. But they figure with a couple of years in the senate they'll be able to present her as someone with experience. The corporatists have not just given up and dissapeared because they and their current rubber-stamp president has fallen out of favor. That's not what they do. They lay low and manoeuver behind the scenes and wait for their next chance, just like they did in the nineties. They're counting on the fact that Palin will rally both the religious and corporatist factions of the party into the same coalition once more, something neither Guliani, Romney or Huckabee were able to do, and that they'll once more be able to win elections. It's all about the corporate machine. That's why Sen. Stevens is not going to resign. And McCain knows it.

To all of you who think Sarah can appoint herself Senator. A new state ethics law, the one she is said to have violated, says there will be a special election to find the new Senator. This came about when former govenor Murkowski appointed his daughter as a Senator. Yes things up here are quite a mess that it will take years to clean out the — — — T in the sewer.

Sarah Palin was cited with Abuse of Authority under her own Ethics investigation which has been extended to included her paying herself thousands of dollars in per diems of the Alaskan taxpayers money.  She also used the military plane more than the military.  She charged her families expenses on the Alaskan taxpayers and she got the people who she granted a huge contract to, to help her husband build the house they are currently in.  She is the biggest hypocrite and cannot criticize Stevens or claim she is the person to clean anything up when she is not clean or cleared of worse.  I do not believe with all of the LIES and SMEARS, that no one addresses the TRUTH about Palin's character.  She lied and said she was cleared when the whole world read or heard the verdict.  She and her husband just gave a deposition because it continues and yet the media is not mentioning it saying this woman is qualified.  Sometimes the media is the biggest joke and detriment to people knowing the full truth.

bornagain and all others commenting here!

Just once I would like to enter a forum and see the people (regardless of Party Affiliation) stick to the thread as presented, without injecting their thoughts about other people and what they think about them only for self satisfaction and to further their party's spin and talking points.

                                                The question asked was:

Agree or Disagree: Sen. Ted Stevens should step down immediately from the Senate. Why don't you attempt to answer this question without wandering all over the place. I personally disagree because after he was convicted of a felony by a jury, he as an American and by our mandates has the RIGHT TO APPEAL,no matter how you feel personally after reading that he was convicted and until then he should not be judged or asked to resign.
Put yourself in his place. Would you give up a position that you have held for many a year or give up your right of appeal. Wouldn't you use up all your rights to overturn that conviction? I think you would!! Until that  process is completed, he should not be judged or resign. Did any of you read the transcript of the trial? Or are you basing your comments on what you read in a Media story or heard on a blog?
I am an independent and am not affiliated with either party. I am merely addressing the question asked based on my experiences throughout my 71 years of existence and due diligence. Let the process play out before making any judgements. Many a conviction has been overturned by appeal. And you should not surmise what the people of Alaska should or should not do. That is for them to judge using their own due diligence.  I suggest you do the same.

                                                @Ralph/Kissimme,Florida,

Sorry to inform you, he was found Guilty and they are right at this moment looking for loopholes for the appeal and when they can not find any, guess what. They will use the old and feeble Alzheimer's card, so he won't do jail time.

Appeals are a way to find loopholes and get a new trial with omitted evidence. That right there is a loophole. I'm so sure he did nothing wrong and I just crawled out of a cave last night....

You sound like a person that is not old (not talking about age) nor feeble, please don't make excuses for someone like Stevens. He does not deserve any of our sympathies.

I hope you are a taxpayer, they will need your money and ours for this debacle. We will all end up paying for his stay at a "Luxury" prison.

Looking at your age, I am assuming that you are retired. If you are receiving SS benefits, this debacle will cost you money in the near future. I wish you all the best in finding the truth in this matter. Since you are of the mind set that this was a TRUMPED way to get rid of all of the current GOP's.

There ya go, I stayed on Topic.
