We need to get the economy back on track asap. The other issues will follow with a stronger economy.

I think the economy has to top this list; having said that, I think they ALL need to be given high priority. The reality is that Obama will have a lot on his plate precisely because the outgoing administration has been such a failure on so many levels.

Modern conservative economic policies can't deal with the current situation; we had mass unemployment, high government borrowing and high interest rates for a decade, last time round.  Can the USA afford the current level of deficit for the next ten years?

Obama has a mandate for change, and I suggest that his first change should be economic.  Only the Keynesian approach, or massive, prolonged consumer borrowing, have been proved in the past, to get the world out of recession.

Obama should address the nation and engage the US citizens and tell every person in the country to increase their effort in everything they do by 5%. Do you know what would happen when 300 million people applied themselves 5% harder in all that they do on a day-to-day basis? Would love to have a mathematician/economist provide some numbers on what that would do to the nation.

Unfortunately Joe Citizen aka Joe The Plumber just sits back and takes in all the headlines and feels nothing but helpless to change his situation. And once again the media, in the pursuit of ratings, is doing nothing but compounding the effect. Pending recession/depression is to MSNBC, NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, CNN as a hurricane is to The Weather Channel - RATINGS TIME!!.

Well said fuzzman999! In a democratic republic (similar to the one you live in today) it is the majority of the citizens (that is the democratic part) voting for a one of their own to represent their needs in government (thats the republic part).  Today, the Joe Average citizen pays approximately 30% of income in federal, state, and local taxes - and instead of balancing the budget responsibly and looking out for the needs of the the people that they represent, most members of Congress choose the path that kind of represents their constituents but mostly act with legal impunity and financial indiscretion.  Instead of asking Joe taxpayer to pony up 5% more of something, I have a better idea.  How about demanding that Congress be restricted to two term limits like the President is? That way, our government will have fresh ideation and will be run by public servants, not moronic and wealthy snobs that snub their noses at the idea of accountibility and the laws of the people who elected them.

I don't know why some people are always demanding that Obama apologize for something and everything. Bush should apologize for all the mistakes he made and havoc he created, misleading us into a war and murders committed against our troops thus causing Obama to be elected into office. Why is Bush still in office when he should be in jail anyway since 2002...lock the door and throw the key away far into a deep and wide ocean.  Let the truth be told.

you people have such small minds!!! if the terrorists take out wall street or attack us anywhere else the economy is irrelevant. We've thrown how many trillions at fixing the economy? and where does it go? Citybank gets another handout and these idiots in Washington let them spend 400 mill to keep their name on a fu*#ing stadium? if that doesn't prove these politicians don't know what their doing; i just don't know, what's it gonna take? and does anyone remember that Clinton deregulated the banks so that we could have a CityGroup?  but come on folks do you really think the dems were going to fix anything the last two years? we get to suffer these problems while the gloat politically! accountability is a concept we've proved to them we obviously could care less about! does anyone think they feel the pinch of high energy costs, do any of these people pay their mortgage with anything other than a bribe from the special interests? let's get back to reality people!!!

                    imark14,

It is our debt-base money system that needs modifying.  Financial institutions are allowed to issue credit/loans at high interest rates, even if institutions don't the loan amount in its possession. The logic is debt equals money, with the assumption once debtors make due on loans, it increases money and decreases debt. High debt means individuals aren't paying back loans...a decrease in cash. I remember a time anyone could get a credit card because institutions are in competition with one another and now look where we are. Financial institutions and loaners are greedy, plain and simple.  The more money they loan out, the more money they'll get. The more credit received, the more used even if it is unaffordable and risky either way. It is far more complex than the explanation provided, but basically this is what occurred.  What is the US, a supposed "powerful country" doing borrowing from China, taking from Peter to pay Paul.  The trillion dollar debt war did not have to be had Bush used professional judgment and not invade Iraq based on a lie...for no legitimate reason.  We're here now, so how do we get out? This is the most important question. Any answers? This is reality.
