The economy is in such a mess, it has to be one of the first things addressed.

First have someone help you fill out your applications ("I" should be capitalized / and "I am been looking" I don't even know where to start. Try one of the mills, logging companies, or casinos, they still have jobs open. There are jobs, maybe you just need to lower your standards a bit, if you have "been looking for a year" and found nothing, you haven't been looking very hard.

Actually TR-421173, the jobs that you mention at the mills and casinos no longer exist.  Due to the housing market and the economy many of the mills in the area have shut down completely.  The casinos have laid off many workers because the expendable income doesn't exist right now.  Maybe you should pick up an econ book.

Not to mention the fact that you should show a little respect to someone who has gone abroad to protect your ability to talk so disrespectfully to someone else.

Having lived for several years in the Portland area which includes the dot bust era I can vouch for job hardship in the pacific northwest during recessions...worst in the country.  During the good times there are people with college diplomas taking your order at mcdonalds but there are jobs to be found if one is dilligent!

I wish the young hero the best of luck.  I can't say much for his grammar.  Just because he uses that type of language in this forum doesn't mean he uses it on his resume or during interviews so lighten up everyone.

Use that GI Bill, soldier!  Get an education on the gov't because you deserve it, you earned it and it is the smart thing to do!  Don't wait around either!

Please DJ, pick up an intermediate economic text book and you'll learn that one person is almost never responsible for massive job loss or job gain.  At least with the minuscule tax increase Obama is proposing for the weathiest of Americans those without jobs will not have to worry about their children not being able to see a doctor when they are sick.

For our struggling heros that return from Iraq we thank you, but unfortunately the Bush administration sent the message loud and clear, that message was that you should have gone and worked for a private security firm.  Appearently they are the soldiers that mattered for Bush and his friends, since they are the ones who were paid massive sums of money to violate international law, kill innocents, and after it was all said and done get away with it all and a fat check on top of it.

Larry forget about the idiotic comment to you from TR ok.  You always get the clowns that want to belittle someone.  It's going to be a numbers game for sure.  Jobs are hard to come by and especially if you aren't specialized in a field.  Don't listen to the people that think they have some inside information about there not being any jobs because of Obama either.  These business were closing down before Obama took office and he needs to raise the employers taxes and not ours.  This is why really the media needs to stay out of it and this is a dumb azz post by the media to us.  Just sit back and let Obama and his staff let us know and show us their priorities before we make any comments.  Hell we all are aware that the economy should be #1 and the troops to stop taking lives of our citizens.  The media is always starting bs and they are going to do this to this administration for sure.

Dear Larry, Employers prefer people who can read and write well. Secondly, don't give up a job until you have another one already lined up. Good luck and a positive attitude will get you what you need. If you made it through the military, I'm sure you'll succeed. Sincerely, Steve.

Don't expect any quick improvements in job growth. During a recession, look at the stock market, because it's a Lleading" economic indicator, meaning it anticipates what the economy will be doing in 6-9 months, and it's going down right now.

Conversely, Employment is considered a "Lagging" economic indicator, meaning that jobs are added by businesses only when needed to meet increased demand for products and services. This normally takes 6-9 months after the economy actually rebounds.

The bottom line is that significant job growth is 12-18 months away, regardless of what Obama and Congress do. The "Infrastructure" jobs are temporary Union jobs, which might help the 2 or 3% of workers that belong to a Construction Union, but what about the 95%+ of us who don't belong to a Construction Union?

I live in NE. MN and our Mining, and Logging industries are closing up their newer explorations, which resulted in many layoffs, and the repercussions of it. I live in a small town that was created by iron mining back in the 60's. In early 2000 and the late '90s the mining operation closed up. Home values fell to a point when homes could be picked up for 10k. in 2006 and 2007 they started exploration again hoping to bring mining back to NE MN and life back to this small town, however, within the last 6 months many of the workers have been laid off, and they have started removing the heavy mining equipment. It is expected that they will close up completely again, and thus once again devistating this small town.

So unless Americans are able to go back to work, and rebuild a demand for manufactured products, that require these materials such as logging and mining for precious metals, towns like these will become ghost towns. I know of several of my neighbors who have been laid off, and as a result have filed bankruptcy.

There have just been to many years where neo-cons have been rewarding the wealthy in sending American Manufacturing jobs overseas via tax cuts. America needs to start manufacturing things again, instead of pushing paper around.

And TR you speak of lowering his standards. To what flipping burgers? last I checked that was a Minimum wage job, I don't know about you, but I have scraped by on it. Let me tell you something about that. working minimum wage jobs, you are working 3 of them just to cover the rent, food, and transportation. If you get sick, forget it, your fired. And speaking of getting sick, if you do, well guess what, you cannot even afford to be seen. There is no Doctor, or Dentist care, no optomotrics if you need eye glasses. I had children, guess what, they couldn't even get medical care that they required. As a result I had child protection crawling up my ass.  It is idiots like you that think that people can live on 6 or 7 dollars an hour, and support their families.

go to globalissues dot org and read for yourself how widespread poverty is.

Somehow get those with the most to trickle down just a bit.
The unbriddled greed by those who have been in power is
insatiable.  They won't invest in anyone's ideas unless they
      are rich friends.

And the businesses that have been raping their customers
with loan shark rates while they borrow at near zero %.
They leverage their assets at 40X and raise peoples rates
if they try to use their 1X.  Companies like Wachovia and

Now that the new president is in office You will get a lob, you will get food, you will get a new energy efficient electric car that Detroit will be forced to build,(it will be free because no one will buy them) You will get gas for the car, (not that it will use much), and if you are patient you will get a new house for free, compliments of the rest of the nation whoose wealth the new president is going to help spread around, so dont worry be happy! Like the girl who was interviewed after one of the Obama rallys said (paraphrase) I won't have to worry about those things because HE said if I helped HIM, HE will help me. I am a veteran as well but I live in Wisconsin.  Now, I certianly don't know how the state of Oregon operates things for veterans, but in WI the state offers help to veterans as far as money for school.  Are the GI-bill and Army college fund available to you?  Someone wrote it's not what it used to be, there right, it 's much better now. There is more money available now than when I was serving. You should contact your states Veterans Affairs office and see what benefits are offered for your home state.  You can also check out military.com, they may have some useful information as well.  You have a computer, use it.

well for anyone who cares to listen... i agree that without the safety of our country the economy doesn't matter because there wouldn't be a country to worry about, but right now i think that the safety of our country isn't struggling as badly as the economy is. The war is with a few nations while the economy is affecting the entire world. This can trigger new wars because of what the people of our country have done and the most we can do is fix it. Also, the economy is affecting more people right now than the war is. I'm not saying that I don't appreciate our troops, because I do, but people are losing their jobs and homes in our own country- on our own soil. The troops are doing their job and Obama has an entire cabinet to help protect our nation, but the most important thing right now is to fix this economic crisis.

Roy Wilson, I know it is taught that the stock market is the leading indicator, but it took the stock market nearly two years after the economy started falling for it to reflect how bad the economy is.

In reality, the stock market booms when the unemployment rate is low and bombs when the unemployment rate is high. The stock market gambles on a business's profitability, and a business is profitable because the middle class and poor earn money to buy what the company is selling. It is the people working in manufacturing and construction that buy the products that drive our economy and the stock market.

America's economy can survive stock market crashes easily, but when working classes are not employed and able to spend money, we get what we have now.

We need to stop worrying about how much POTENTIAL income is lost in the stock market GAMBLE and start making sure that people who buy things keep their ACTUAL incomes.

We the People need to tell Obama to stop bailing out the stock market and finacial institutions and start bailing out the manufacturing and construction companies so the workers have the money to buy things and boost our economy back up again.

There should be more labor unions. Labor unions are not money sucks, they protect workers. Who do you think an employer is more afraid of? one employee that they can take benefits from, move around on all kinds of odd ball shifts, and if they get ill can let them go with out so much as a reason? Or the labor union where if the company decides to screw with the workers can and will stand up for each other.

I work for a state government, and I proudly pay my union dues. I have better benefits than I ever had working non union jobs, and I also do not have to worry about some administrator screwin around with my hours, my pay, my benefits, or terminating me without just cause. And all this because my voice is one of many.

You have a state union job? a job where your wages increase every year without negotiation. If this is true then you kind of are the problem. If we as a people have to cut back to make ends meet our government needs to do the same. Your job makes it harder because the government automatically needs more money every year to just pay employees. You have the gravy train enjoy it a#$hole.

surprised...I don't think he was being racist...but realistic. Afterall, all races including Hispanics here legally, are hurt by illegals who are hired at lower pay than them. Not the fault of the undocumented, but the fault of employers, who need to be prosecuted.

Mr. Blue....That attitude is just wrong to display at your fellow citizens. Americans have always arisen to the occasion, no matter the hard work. The problem is low wages that are often below minimum wage. It is the large farm conglomerates, some owned by overseas firms now, that hire these people and keep Americans out. If the wages were realistic and living wage based, then I assure you Americans would flock to them like any other. Further, it hurts other countries as much as our own, to draw their labor force to us, as that is what is needed there to develop their country, in industry and agriculture.

he's not being racist...he said all illegal aliens. I know there are Canadians here with out green cards, I also know about some Bosnians too.

And about "jobs we wouldn't do"... That's one of the problems with our counrty right now. There are some jobs available... but it is true most Americans won't do them. We need to stop feeling so "entitled" to the perfect job or not taking a job  "beneath our station".  My grandfather used to say "I'd rather dig a latrine than take welfare." Now the sentiment seems to be. I'd rather take welfare than work at a job that is beneath me."

Where did The American work ethic go?

If we are going to "fine and jail employers who knowingly hire illegals to pay less with no benefits" then when are we going to "fine and jail employers who knowingly hire Americans with less pay and no benefits and no union", i.e. WALMART? They are a billion dollar industry and they are sucking the life out of the small business sector by not providing any benefits or representation to its workers and pay them peanuts!

                  thehoz,

Oklahoma has such a law that makes it illegal to hire or rent homes to illegal immigrants.  There is more to it, you will have to look up all details of the law yourself.  My great-great grandfather was an irish immigrant who came over here looking for a new life.  He had a dream and wanted to see it come true.  He got off a boat in New York City, signed up for the army, and became a Union solider.  Thank GOD they did not send him back because he wasn't an American citizen.  Better yet, thank the LORD it was not left up to you.

You go dawn in mass, the problem is that too many kids have been raised to be lazy, if you have a family to  provide for you will do just about anything. And the last thing that we need is for some illegal immigrant taking up these jobs. Wake up people there are tons of americans here now with four year degrees out of work. So that means they will step down and take the jobs that the non degree people would occupy and the cycle trickles down the ladder. So yes it does matter if we have illegal immigrants here taking our jobs. And yes we were all immigrants at one time, but we did it the right way.

Holy Crap, where do I start with this one.  First of all, there is nothing wrong with people coming to this country to improve their lives as long as it is done LEGALLY!!

For those who think the illegal immigrants do jobs that "no one else would", and think it is OK, need to look at the big picture.  These employers AND employees are not contributing to our economy.  Neither pays taxes.

Wanting people to come into this country legally is NOT racist!!  Most people don't have a problem with where these people come from or what color they are, but that they come, take jobs and don't pay taxes, can't communicate in English when they go to a retail store or restaurant, get tax breaks for opening businesses with financial help to open the business, etc.  It is a hard pill to swallow for people who were born and raised here that cannot open a business with tax breaks if they can even get the loan(s) needed to open a business.

Again, I am not against people from other countries coming here to better their lives.  I do think they should do it legally, pay taxes and contribute to the economy of the country that you choose to live in.

If you choose to live in another country, learn their customs, laws and language(s).  Respect their customs (i.e. don't fly your home country flag above the country flag of your chosen residence).  When you visit or move to another country, you are subject to their laws, so it pays to know what can get you into trouble.  And learn their language(s).  You should not expect people in another country to speak your language when they have spoken their language for centuries!  You should be able to count change to keep from being cheated, read directions and news or order from a menu.  It drives me INSANE to have to choose between English and Spanish before I can even get to the first menu of telephone options (what country is this anyway?)!!!

Another thing killing this economy is the laws that permit immigrants to start a business here and keep it for seven years and pay no taxes and get grants to help them start the business, they in return go back to their country after the seven years are up and sell it to their cousin or brother for another seven years raping our country and taking advantage of the helping hand that our government  has offered laughing all the way to the bank. I have seen this for myself and know that we the tax payers are financing this whole mess.

I can find some truth in everything that all of you have mentioned. However, what is the ultimate sure-all, cure-all for bringing our jobs back to US soil? Has anyone ever thought about abolishing NAFTA and imposing a tax (similar to the VAT tax in Europe) upon those that wish to import goods into our country? Surely, the increased prices would not only keep Americans from purchasing foreign goods but it would make those once American companies realize that it's time to move their businesses back to American soil.

Unfortunately, you also need to consider the fact that the unions have had a hand in this as well. We always want more and more and it's never enough. Why on earth do you think that these large companies keep moving overseas in the first place? People just don't know their limitations. If you are lucky enough to be able to land a job that pays you $36 an hour, as well as low insurance premiums, to punch a hole in a piece of metal, why complain about it? There are thousands of individuals out there who would happily do that for half of your pay.

I also wanted to mention that I work two jobs just to make ends meet and without either one, my family would suffer. Make no mistake, there are still jobs available if you are willing to work. These jobs may be thankless and menial compared to what your Bachelor's or Master's degree once promised you, but they will keep food on your table and a roof over your head.

Sent, unions have tried to organize Wal-mart.  And guess what, employees have always rejected it.  I am sure your liberal mindset will call it a conspiracy and that Wal-Mart threatened its employees but hate to break it to you but you are wrong.  Most of us believe that unions hurt our economy.  They have created more non-skilled, overpaid whiners than I can imagine.  Wal-Mart employes over 1 million people, and guess what, when a new store opens they are flooded with applications.

I have nothing against immigration -- only illegal immigration. When the illegals work here, it allows employers to NOT pay payroll and Social Security taxes. I'm not a big fan of rewarding employers financially for breaking the law. Second, undocumented workers don't get health insurance or worders' compensation. So when they are sick or injured, they go to the local ER and rack up big bills that are never paid. So the taxpayers end up eating that cost. Moreover, as a law enforcement professional, I can tell you that undocumented workers are far from being universally virtuous. Manyy defendants I interview have dozens of aliases and criminal histories that span half a dozen states.

Also, the "crap" jobs only get "crap" pay because employers know they can easily get undocumented workers for pennies on the dollar. If this employment loophole did not exist, the wages of for unpleasantt jobs would increase quite a bit.

You want to pay off the national debt? Get rid of the illegal aliens and make the corporations pay taxes!

I have a college degree and I am currently returning to school in order to become an educator. I lost my previous job in November and I have not been able to secure a job since. Once people find out I have a degree and that I have worked in upper managment, they look for someone who either does not have a degree or will "cost less" in their mind. The funny thing is that if someone walked up to me today and offered me a job changing linens at a hotel or picking tomatoes for less than minimum wage, I'd take it. Americans have this idea that they are too good for these types of jobs. I agree with everyone who says we should close our borders and fine or imprison people who hire illegal immigrants. Americans need to stop complaining about the current job market and prove to our potential employers that we are just as hard a worker as an illegal immigrant and that we will take any job that is required of us in order to survive as a people and as a country. There is nothing wrong with cleaning toilets, dishing out fries, or picking fruit and vegetables. We need to use it and therefore we should be responsible for taking care of it, not someone who comes in under our governments' radar and sends American money back to a foreign country. I come from a family of immigrants, but my family came over the legal way and they worked their way up from menial labor jobs to corporate business jobs. I respect everyone for whatever job they have, but I do not respect someone who steals our wages. That goes for illegal immigrants and any American who would rather get unemployment than "pick fruit" or "scrub toilets".

                          Dear tiredofidiots -

While I agree that people should come here legally, it's a very complex issue and there is no black-and-white fix for it no matter which side of the aisle you're on.  I have been to Mexico many times.  In many areas, there are no jobs - period.  Their country suffers economically in ways that we can't even imagine.  It doesn't make it right, but if my family was basically living outside and I needed to feed them, I might jump the border, too.  You do what you have to when your children are going hungry, right?

For the record, I don't personally believe that illegals do the jobs that Americans won't do - I've worked plenty of those "crap jobs".  I'm working one now due to my fiance getting badly injured in a car accident, which put him out of work for a few months.  I had to take a 2nd job, and no way is any job beneath me when I need to pay my bills.  Because we have no kids, we didn't get any gov't handouts to help us out.  I know of many people who have kids just so the gov't will pay for everything.  And we live in a society that has been telling us that lots of debt for fancy cars and huge TV's is the way to go.  Many of our financial woes are the fault of our own people.  And don't even get me started on Wall St. thieves who bankrupt people and don't even go to jail or pay back the money.

And you're wrong about illegal aliens not paying taxes.  All the same taxes come out of their paychecks as come out of mine and yours.  Since illegal aliens can't run over to H&R Block to file their taxes without being found out, guess what?  They dont' get a tax return - which means it's free money for the goverment.  The government benefits, and all taxpayers, illegal or not, foot all the resulting medical and educational bills.  Illegals cost us money, but they contibute, too. There are reasons that Bush didn't want them sent back, and I'm betting that they're mostly financial ones.

Some wars are necessary - Iraq was not.  Where's Osama?  We still don't know.  Natural distaters... and too many loopholes in the system.   Illegals are just one tiny piece of this whole mess.   It's gonna take changes on many fronts to fix all of it, and it's gonna take time.  It took millions of us to shoot our economy in the foot.  I believe Obama will lead us to solutions that make real sense.  Not to mention real cents!

I agree, that the problem is the employers. Fine them or shut down their businesses and the (illegal) problem goes away......but it ain't going to happen! Why? because our government is forced to look the other way because they CAUSED the problem. Why would anyone (today) do those jobs when it's more profitable to sit home, watch Oprey, and wait for the benefit checks? Their socialist agenda not only resulted in a need for cheap (illegal) labor, but destroyed the black family as well.

I am a "native" American as was my father and his father as was his father's father and somewhere back down the line I am sure that my ancesters "legally" imigrated to this country. There were also American "Indian women" in my family tree. (assuming that is what You mean by "native american"). But in fact, being a "Native" in any country only requires that you were born in the land or that you LEGALLY imigrated there. ( unless the land was won by conquest ) But that is another issue all together. So... Now that my RIGHT to make "such comments" has been established. The issue at hand has to do with ILLEGAL imigration and the damage it causes TO ever resident of this country who has the legitimate RIGHT to be here!     Now what I wonder is...are you legally here?

Thanks for the vote of confidence   Too many like you and we will fail miserably.  I am only sorry that you are so full of pessimism on a day like today.  Everyone needs to roll up their sleeves and get ready to move forward, no matter who you voted for...

Obama doesn't come even close to being a Leader. The guy is inexperienced and lacking leadership. What a disapppointment. Our country is in for a bad year ahead. He knows as much about politics as my 10 year old son! What an idiot Obama is. The country was better off when Bush was in the office. There are alot of people in this country who are disappointed that Obama is in office. What a disgrace having a @!$%# in office...

Jeff, your are an idiot.  All politics aside, I think having somebody other than a rich white guy as President is the best thing that could have happended and may help America in the future.  I personally don't think Obama will do a good job, but it has nothing to do with ethnicity.  I don't agree with the left agenda and I think the Americans that voted for him are in for a rude awakening.   Honestly, in the end, I hope that I am wrong and that he is the best President this country has every had.

I truly feel sorry for your 10 year old son to have to be brought up in such an ignorant, hate filled, and malicious environment. It's been my experience that most people sharing your antiquated and bigoted views also blame minorities for their failures in life. I hope you are teaching your son more about taking responsibility for his own actions and future instead of clinging to a doctrine of misplaced anger and hate.

im not saying what jeff said was right but other peoples such as irish and italians have been called bad names as well. people think balck people are the only people who have ever suffered in this country but most poeple dont know that they were treated quite well during slavery. im not saying all were but most. when the chinese, italians, irish, and other people came here, they were treated just as bad or worse than blacks ever did. but what im trying to say is that for those who believe blacks have disadvantages and that obama is the greatest thing to ever happen to this country, you better wake up. the reason why most blacks are living in the dumps today is because they arent willing to go out and find a job. and yeah, not all jobs are great but i went into a wendys the other day and saw a 17 year old black kid asking for a job. they accepted him. if he can get a job at wendys anyone can. its not the greatest job ever but its still something. italians have been called all sorts of stuff and irish have been prosecuted for being catholic. so shut up about blacks being disrespected. theres a lot of others out there who have gone through worse. my grandparents for example.

Wow!! Unbelievable Jeff and DMessina. Jeff you are ridiculous and need an education you know like OUR President mentioned today in his inauguration speech.  If you graduated from high school you probably skimmed by in English class and history. Any person that makes racial comments is one that lacks eduaction. I am hispanic and I am glad we have elected a President that is educated and can speak eloquently and can REPRESENT the U.S. at a world meeting or be seen on television. African Americans can be proud that President Obama got elected just as any other race would be proud that a person of their ethnicity could have been elected. President Obama and his family embody the morals we have lost in this country. As for DMessina my grandparents worked the fields almost as a slave moving from 1 region to another to make ends meet- for a roof over their heads, food on the table and material to make their clothes. They worked any job since they could not read and or write. All of the generations after have been fortunate to go to school it is our choice to stay and get an education but we don't appreciate EVERYTHING that we have in our lives now--we always want more and in our fingertips.  Good luck to everyone who is looking for a job and if you have one don't leave it.  I am looking forward to helping in any change that the U.S. needs to move onward and build our country up again.

Based on what is Obama going to be a great leader?  I will give him a chance but I am approaching this in the best way I know to deal with politicoes.  Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Mr. Obama, if you look at what little history (Junior Senator from IL folks) he has, you would find that he has made some very questionable deciscions.  Including contributing to the Meteoric Rise in housing prices.  Thereby cripling the economy.  Read the fair leading practices act enacted by I believe Carter and you will realise how the wording almost forces banks to make bad lending deciscions.  As a Lawyer Obama received many kickbacks from this act.  Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac ceo's had him in their pocket.

I didn't vote for Obama as you can see but again I pray for his wisdom, he's still my president like him or not.

A Leader you say of Obama. The same guy who nominated a guy who doesn't pay his taxes to oversee the IRS and make sure we do pay our taxes.

The same guy who purchased prime property for far less that its market value from a Convicted Felon (Rezko), who just so happens to be one of Obama's Campaign fund raisers. And that same convicted felon was also a campaign fund Raiser for Blagojevich. What a coincidence!

Was the purchase of the property for less than its value a Political payback, favor or Bribe. Never the less, you can be sure that Rezko, Obama's convicted little Buddy is already on the Pardon List.

                                    What a Leader!

Maybe his past associations are an indication, as well as his current nominations. Like the guy who doesn't pay his taxes but yet is qualified in Obama's mind to lead the IRS.

There's how I know. He gave us a great big sign with all his past associations.

We are in Trouble with this Guy!

I suppose you're OK with a guy who doesn't pay his taxes as a qualified / experienced crook to oversee the IRS and make sure you and I pay our taxes.

There's one of many chances he's had and he nominated the wrong guy. He also associated with the wrong people, but not a big deal he's bringing "CHANGE".

What does Joe the Plumber have to do with this? A guy Obama approached and pissed off with his Spread the Wealth BS.

Well, his spread the Wealth BS is causing Corporations and the Wealthy to lleave this Country. And he never said he had a license. He said he was going to school to obtain one. One he would need to own the Company, but not need to be an employee of the Company.

You Libs. are really brain dead!

How many chances does a Democrat give a Democrat? As many as he wants until he gets caught.

JOBS! Real Jobs, not low paying pathetic retail or service jobs (although a living wage law would help here), but REAL BLUE COLLAR Middle Class Paying Jobs.  The best way to do this, is to pass a law to REQUIRE all Companies who wish to sell here to make it here, period. Trade is wasteful and hurtful to the nation, leading to pauperism abroad and destruction of the engine of middle class makers in America. The only thing we should really trade is ideas, discoveries, and natural resources, freely and openly. But for all finished products, MAKE THEM HERE TO SELL THEM HERE, IN AMERICAN OWNED FACTORIES - MAKE THEM ABROAD TO SELL THEM ABROAD - This will creates millions of GOOD JOBS here and abroad and develop Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe!  Oh, and while he's at it, take control of the FEDERAL RESERVE, which should never have been private - its a scam and stop paying interest to them on the money we borrow, like Kennedy did - and REREGULATE WALL STREET like FDR.

I agree with you but there is one thing wrong with making American products. The unions come in and then pay is high until a strike comes along. The American public has to be willing to work for a decent wage not rape the employer . Some for everyone is better than some for a few

Totally agree.  The first thing they should do to create jobs in bring them home.  OUTLAW Outsourcing.  These banks are taking our tax dollars and still laying us off for cheaper labor over seas.  Is our tax dollars paying foreign salaries?   Is this patriotism, no it is greed, even though everyone says what will help this country is jobs, these corps still outsource.  That is because their only allegiance is to the the bottom line not our nation.  If outsourcing was made illegal how many of the 2.8 million jobs that were lost in 2008 would be regained.

You people really need to get a grip! Or, maybe an education! Outsourcing didn't kill the jobs in this country: The unions did. How can you believe anything else makes sense? If it's cheaper to shut down a mammoth production facility here, pay to build the same factory elsewhere in the world, pay to ship the product back here, and the only difference is the cost involved with the labor, what's to blame?

Sure, rob the common citizen from the gains he's made in income and wages, by attacking the one organization that has stood for him, the Union. Yeah, Unions are not perfect, but they are a democratic way for free people to monitor business and insure that their rights are protected and wages secure. The Japanese have Unions, the Germans have Unions, yet that kept their factories. They kept them by making sure their businesses did not outsource and invested in their future, so their children could inherit something. The Union is not perfect, but it is needed, otherwise you'd have an intrusive government doing what Unions do. Make it here, to sell it here, as the LAW would do the trick here and abroad - trade freeley in natural resources, ideas, and discoveries; but make it here in factories owned by our Citizens, inherited by our Children.

After the past year it is indeed unbelievable that even in hindsight some people do not recognize the greed of those who use the work and resources of others to create their own wealth.   The reason companies are tanking, (aside from the banks not loosening a grip on their bail-out dollars)  is that the people at the top believe they deserve multi-million-dollar salaries, benefits and retirement packages.  They say they have earned it.  No one earns an income who does not do the work.  Taking advantage of everyone else's energy and resources is not work.  It is usury.

You couldn't be more wrong. The reasons the unions work in the foreign countries is because their intent is to make the company better. The reason that unions are killing jobs here is because they've been bastardized, corrupted and run into the ground by a collection of reprobates that should be in jail!!! The union leadership has no interest in making things better for the workers here. Look at the grievances they file sometime. It's not about making things better for the employee, it's about increasing the power of the union.

Actually, trade is essential to a healthy economy.  What we need is to make countries that sell their stuff here, sell our stuff there also.  Another thing - when China can pay someone .50 an hour to make something, we need to put a high enough tarrif on it to make the cost comparable to something similar made here.  We can't pay our workers less to keep up, but we can level the playing field, so to speak.

                                            TO: Farkie3

We don't need any more laws. Especially regarding outsourcing. What we need is to reduce the Corporate taxation in this Country, which is the 2nd highest in the World.

Companies should be worried about the Bottom Line, if they aren't, they would be out of Business or moving their Business out of this Country as they are doing Now.

Along with this trend, we also have to date, more and more wealthy people moving their assets offshore. Can't blame them! They like Corporations are being taxed to death by our greedy and power hungry politicians who prey on the fact we won't do anything or can't do anything to prevent it.

Well guess what, something is being done, but not by the voters thru an election, but by the big Corporations and the Wealthy. They are simply getting the hell out of this over taxed greedy Country run by the crooked 535.

What we need is our money back thru reduced taxation (Corp. Tax, Individual Tax and Capital gains tax) in order to fix this crisis created by our lovely trustworthy Politicians.

rmbscuba~ I think that you are seriously out of touch. The tax is not the issue. The US has a GDP many times higher than many other countries who have lower taxes. The problem is that these big companies get so big, that even if they had tax cuts, they wouldn't create a new job. Big corporations are always wining about high taxation, and benefits costing them too much, but mean while their CEO is making millions of dollars per year.

What needs to happen is that we need to bring in more legisilation like the anti trust acts, and break up some of the enormous companies, so there is intense competition that bring in more jobs, and that way the markets cannot be controlled by a few MNC's that have people serving on each other's board of directors. Not only would breaking these companies up create jobs, increase competition, but it would bring them back down to a size so that they would not be to big to fail.

rmbscuba- you're an absolute liar.  The U.S. has lower corporate tax rates than nearly all European countries for one.  Corporations in this country have been paying fewer and fewer taxes for the past 30 years, and all the while have still cut and outsourced jobs.  During all this, CEO pay has moved into the next galaxy.  You do the math.  Your talk is cheap and outdated.  Corporations in this country need to be handled with a firm hand- especially when they show up to Capitol Hill in private jets asking for MY tax money.

Corporate tax receipts only make up 2% of the overall federal tax receipts.  In the 1950s, it used to be 35%.  You keep pimping the failed "trickle down" theory when that has now been thoroughly rejected.  The empirical data is now here to prove it.  It's insulting to hear someone continuing to sell failed Reaganomics policies to people who have been decimated by them.

Yeah, lets give big corporation more tax breaks.  Maybe they can move even more jobs overseas while their CEO can upgrade his corporate jet.  We don't need more economics lessons from neo-cons right now.

                                                      Hi all,

What we need is bringing up the economy and make sure that loans are not given to anyone and everyone without proper details and information about the person. I am sure that Obama will be able to do it if he plan properly. But at least 1 - 1.5 years is needed to get back the original America. Let's pray and hope to see America back again soon and every one get their jobs back.

                                                      Regards

                                                      Brandon

Sometimes I have hope for a better future but not always.  The rancor dies hard.  A bit over a year ago I started supporting Obama rather than Clinton.  I had every intention of supporting Clinton but then I saw Obama.  I feel a bit cheated because the WWII people had the presidency through 1993 and we boomers only had 16 years but then the Korean War crew didn't take the Whitehouse at all.  Maybe "the greatest generation" just wasn't that good at raising children.  It was always, "Either you are with us or against us."  There was no middle ground.  It fealt like Clinton would have been more of the same.  It's time to move on and forward together.

I'm pretty sure we will have to deal with the war crimes.  Even though it rubs me raw--it might be my boomer being--I think we can let the corruption slide.  We have to move on.  I'm not sure how we can without resolving these issues.

National Security should be our first priority, physically and monetarily.  I also note that the majority of people that elected President Obama were not represented in the attendees at the inaug.  Where could they have been? Working?  That's what it's going to take to get this government back on her feet.  Too many people spending government dollars for the wrong reasons.  I was struck with the stupidity of the Houston mom who drove her children all the way to DC for the inaug with no place to stay and she had no job.  I am wondering what she ended up doing, depending on someone else to get back home to her jobless situation with less money than she had to begin with.  This is part of what is wrong with this country - that and the attitudes of the fine Rev.

I hope that employers out there don't suck in their butt cheeks any more right now - it won't help me personally nor America in general - why can't CEOs and stockholders realize that they are causing the very issues they don't want? Take a profit holiday and not demand a bigger quarter than last month or last year, CEOs reduce your salaries to a reasonable level and retain workers and guess what, people might actually buy goods and services again - but it has to start somewhere and I doubt people living paycheck to paycheck (99% percent of US citizens like me) have much choice at this point and corporations have many more resources than any one of us...

I believe that the economy mess is going to require world-wide support to mend it. To do that would require improving America's image abroad in tandem with new regulations on the banking system, as well as creating a set of public works projects so people can get their jobs back. The economy will heal again as long as people have jobs.

And the two wars that are still on-going? Those need to be ended ASAP since they are a huge drain on the economy as well.

Oh, and apply more regulations on the bank bailout funds like what was done with the auto companies. Don't just give a blank check.

They called Roosevelt a socialist too!  Where would we be without some his "experiments"?  In the 1960s the average CEO's salary was about 35 times that of the average worker in the US.  Today the average CEO's salary is more than 300 times that of the average worker.  The decline of labor unions since the 1970s also correlates with these statistics. Interesting!
