I had a hard time saving anything during better times. I concentrate on paying large sums to my credit card each mo. Then Cuba here I come!
I don't have any big vacations on the books but plan on two travels within the U.S. this summer; one by plane and one by car.
I'm not far from "vulture tourist," but I won't start taking trips to places I don't care about because it's cheap. R&R is better than work
How about option D; I'm too scared of losing my job to spend so much miney this summer?

I am leaving tomorrow for a relatively spontaneous trip to Germany. I got an UNBELIEVABLE deal on hotel + airfare.
While the finances can stand it, we'll be traveling. Heading to BVI soon. Thankfully, still have a job.
Things will get worse if we all stop spending, and vacations help us all be more productive, which is what we need for the economy
I say, if you have money to burn, why not burn it on keeping your sanity by going on vacation. Although those rainy days may be up ahead!
We have not been able to take a vacation for almost 5 yrs now. Last three years not including this year, we have had medical bills, so no.
Vacations are as essential to combatting stress as food and sleep. We'll cut back, but we'll still travel.
Going to the Jazz Fest in New Orleans in April.
Always watch for opportunities to come along. Have to enjoy life..might not be here tomorrow. Carpe Diem!

"Vulture" is a bit extreme, but those of us who can still afford a toned down trip should help keep service workers working.
Who's got money to travel? Isn't this what Republicans wanted; Americans too poor and desperate to do or buy anything?
We have 3 road trips planned. We'll be traveling in our 11 y/o car, staying in budget hotels and making use of the in-room microwave. Fun
I search for the best deals around and only go after I have saved the money for it. No credit card profits from me.

My husband and I recently were able to get a 12 night Mediterranean Cruise, total with airfare, for $5,560.00. 12 night, airfare included... that's incredible. Plus, the ship is brand new! We went back a couple of weeks later to the site we got it on, and there weren't any rooms left for those prices!
$5,560.00?!!! Are you kidding me? Who has that much money to waste on a cruise for goodness sake? That amount would go along way to pay for housing, food and utilities! Nobody I know has that much disposable income to waste on such a thing, we are all just trying to keep our heads above water, and hopefully have a job to keep doing so!
mrshamills: Is that price per person or both? I assumed both. That really is an amazing deal.
MS: you've obviously been watching too much CNN. Yes, things are bad for many people, but not for everyone. Some people still have disposable income, make their housing payments on time, have little in the way of debt, and so on.I sincerely hope your situation improves.
Going on a cruise if you have the money doesn't sound like waste to me.
A friend of mine living in Portland discovered a standing offer for roundtrip airfare from Akron, OH to PDX for $85 last week. I think they're taking tips from The Flintstones up there.
Isn't it amazing,around here pizza shops are complaining their business is down,even though it's lent and people won't eat meat on fridays.It's no wonder Americans are so easy to control,Tell them to be afraid,their scared to death.Tell them the economy is bad,and they stop spending,even though they still have a job.Like George Carlin said,fat and happy because they have a cell phone that can make pancakes.

I think Myk once told me about some crazy good fare he found from Columbus to Bellingham. Do you remember what it was?
He says it was a SkyBus fare. We all know what happened to them.
I never got a taste...
My daughter is coming here (Hawaii) to visit from Washington DC because the air fares she is finding are less than half of normal. Have not checked myself.

Cruises are a great bargin now...We booked last August and the price dropped to half the original...Glad the cruise lines refund if the price falls...We will probably do a second cruise
in the fall...

If there is a good deal when I get there then so be it. We work hard and we are going to play harder no matter the economy!!!

Boy,are those folks hanging on a cruise in for a supprise!. Wait until the tips, beverages, shore excursions, add up, then we'll see what they'll do next. For me, I'll take an all-inclusive vacation anytime....

I work hard, do a good job 5 days a week, make sure my bills are paid on time and use cash instead of credit. I will absolutely take a vacation this year and every year to come.

I already have my vacation planned for Disney in June. We have to spend to get the economy going again!!!

If everybody lets the media stories scare us into not spending, people's fears will become self fulfilling prophecies for many. Everybody cuts back, businesses have to let people go or close down completely. Suppliers and manufacturers then have to cut back or shut down. People will lose jobs because they were afraid they might lose their job. I'll go somewhere this year. Made to foreign trips last year. And, so far this year, we have bought a water heater, a tank for the well system, a refrigerator, a washer, and a dryer. If you need or want it, buy it. You can't tightwad your way out of a recession.

At any rate, I'm in a two-income marriage with no children. I've been laid off before, and we made it. We could do it again if we had to. I'm not going to live in fear of the "what ifs," just like I'm not going to be reckless with my money.
Both great points! I hope more people start feeling this way and go out and spend.
I agree things are a bit scary right now, but if we all keep what we have, we will all end up having less!
I'm taking a vacation to Germany (leaving tomorrow). My airfare + 5 nights in a hotel is cheaper than I ever thought I could get a plane ticket for.

If you want travel deals I went on pleasent holidays website and got two round trip airline tickets with rental car for like $950.00 from L.A. to Honolulu, Hi. I went to the airline (United) and one round-trip ticket same flights was like $950.00 ea. I also went to skyauction.com and saw people bidding much more per ticket. pays to dig and shop around!

We will still have to be frugal, look for bargains, and don't spend on anything we don't need (other than a t-shirt for the grandson). We are paring down the number of days from what we want to what is reasonable and doing a lot of research on the best value for the money.

I traveled to Jamica this month and in May we are going to Arkansa so I do support America, travel agent, flight and all the clothes I had to buy was from our stores, but if you don't get out of our country you will never see how the rest of the world lives.
Just got back from a cruise. Honestly, it was a great bargain. We paid $794 each for a 7 night cruise with balcony cabin, including the air travel and all taxes.
Thinking of Vegas now...
