The "executives" killed AIG, so turn about is completely appropriate. We should be willig to spring for one way tickets - coach.
The "executives" killed AIG, so turn about is completely appropriate. We should be willig to spring for one way tickets - coach.
If Congress spent more time doing their job Denoting as opposed to Emoting, we'd all be better off. This is not helpful.
The exec's knew full well what they were doing. If not suicide, maybe some jail time!
Clueless! If the company didn't make money then there should be no bonuses.
Do the honorable thing...that means decline to accept the bonuses, sincerely apologize for lousy stewardship and then resign! NOW!!!
We should keep all worldly problems in perspective. These troubled times will be forgotten & there are much worse things to address.
I suggest that all in congress take his suggestion and end the suffering of this nation. Take your own lives.
they should all resign the government should take back the 165 from the stimulus package and let them fend for themselves.
Go broke
I'm sure he didn't really want them to commit suicide, but was just mad enough to say it. I am furious and could have said the same thing.
I'm not upset if the bonuses are contractually required payments or needed to retain the talent needed to turn the company around.
Congress is just as much to blame for this mess as corporate execs. The practice of deflection and holier than thou is typical politics!
It's about time people start saying what they're thinking. And .. the execs HAVE to be paid??? LIES!!!
The layperson saw the leak in the cruise ship. Many elected officials failed in their oversight responsibility. Act, Pander or resign.
And what about the huge bonuses given to Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae execs, why aren't these being reported or investigated?
used allegory to show how disgustingly lacking in honor and integrity these people are-not necessarily meaning they should commit suicide
No need for political correctness here. We all understand he wasn't speaking literally. He was trying to make a point, and he did so.
his comments should apply to the Senate and Congress too - anyone that has been in office for more than 4 years is responsible too!
His motovation is sound, but suggesting suicide crosses the line. Quit of be fired would have been a better alternative
Perhaps those senators who voted for a phony war should be subject to the same "honor"
How could any of us not feel complete frustration with such blatent greed of the AIG execs? They are killing us! Turn it back on them.
They should apologize and then return ALL the money and then to do community service. Suicide is the easy way out. Let them work
Greedy money hungry people! Let them live like a normal person! Take everything they have! Give it back to compensate for the so called bonuses they will receive. They deserve nothing!
Here, here. I totally agree.
Amen, too that Travis NE Ohio. We have people in this country taking pay cuts, losing their jobs, suffering foreclosure on their homes. When does it stop!!! These EXECUTIVES should be removed immediately! No questions asked!!. Take everything they have, make them payback their bonuses. It is all GREED!! SHAME, SHAME SHAME ON ALL OF YOU MONEY HUNGRY BAST....DS!
AIG officials and Republicans accepting responsibility and apologizing or committing suicide – a thought that makes me smile.
PS
Anybody need a job? AIG now has plans to expand its PR department. And while you're at it go for a slice of their advertising budget - they're now going to have to put 10 times more money in their budget for that than for bonuses - more wise use of our taxes.
AIG could have raised the 160 million dollars it needed to pay these bonuses by selling the art it has filled it's corporate offices with. Using tax payer money for this purpose just supports the assertion that this is a company who's leadership is prone to making BAD decisions. The argument that these are the people needed to " Right the ship" and generate the profits to repay the American people is ludicrous. At the very least they should be fired, their names made public and their reputations humiliated. If justice were to be served they should be charged and convicted. How long is it going to take the Obama administration to realize that the CONFIDENCE which is so desperately needed to ensure the success of any recovery plan it undertakes will not begin until those responsible are held accountable. It surly cannot happen by giving more money to the same people who are responsible for the bad decisions that got us here in the first place. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice..........well I guess we'll find out who all the real fools are!
I'm sitting here at home, my small company in shambles, my back destroyed from working so hard to pay my bills on time, and now I'm going to lose everything. My family has fallen apart, I don't know how I'm going to pay my mortgage this month, which is already late due to no income, and I'm expected to continue helping others. HOW??!! I can't even help myself!!!
You got what you voted for.
Thank Obama and his teleprompter for this.
No, we didn't vote for this or for the last 8 years! This is a crisis that has built on years in the making...while I understand the need to find a single scapegoat, it just doesn't do anyone justice.
But we are all frustrated and concerned about the ethics of our stewards.....at least I have been for quite sometime and the last 8 years were a thinly disguised pack of lies; here's what we have to show for it......a massive US Ponzi scheme.
So of course these guys feel justified, entitled even, to more of the same. They have NEVER had anyone say they couldn't do what they wanted. AIG is just one tentacle of this massive beast....and it is NOT exclusive to Republicans or Democrats. It's just top tier power grabbing across the board.
Good Luck to all.
Ho there captain marvelous, the pocket that this money came out of was opened up by dear mr. bush and friends. But I am glad to see someone in either Congress or the Senate that's as mad as I am. GO! GO! Grassley.
Do YOU have a job??
Do YOU have any insurance of any kind??
Could YOU operate without ANY insurance??
THey SOLD insurance and PAID off when CONGRESS and the FED FAILED!!!
WHY are you so angry? your tax money is ALWAYS spent without your input.
Nah, probably don't make enough to pay taxes.
All you people here that wonder "where's mine?"
It's out there ,get educated, get a Masters or PHD or MBA and get the job.
OR Become a "sports figure" shoot up with some muscle juice, take your 40 million and retire at 40.
BEST WAY, be a politician!! you never need to answer for anything you do, make a lot of money , get all kinds of stuff after your out of office.
It's all out there , GO get it!!!
Capt. Marvelous - um, um, um. So typical. Far too many Americans have always been, and still are, quick to blame any & all problems on a single man - the President of the United States, whoever might hold the office at the time.
People who do this are consumed with partisan politics - to the detriment of all of us. Such people have a tremendous polarizing effect on life in this country. They totally destroy any possibility of compromise and joint efforts by people who are Americans first and affiliated with a political party second.
Our current economic situation has been brewing for years, if not decades. No one political party, no one industry, no one social strata is solely responsible. This drama has a huge, diversified, broad supporting cast.
Now, back to our friends at AIG. Nothing is off the table when it comes to dealing with these people. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Perhaps some of these "thieves in business suits" should read up on French history of the late 1700s. The arrogance of the undeserving privileged class led to revolution. It was not a good time for those who so arrogantly flaunted their perceived importance.
I say, rise up you peasants! Dethrone the arrogant, privileged ones who have been stealing both your labor and your money! Take power! Take your country and your government back over! It's time for this perception of a "country of the rich, by the rich and for the rich" to forever disappear from the American landscape and be "gone with the wind."
We all have just one vote - one little vote. But, standing together against the injustice of the privileged and powerful few, we can take this country back from the cheats who don't honor the self discipline rules of free markets and free society; from the lobbyists and special interests who buy and own our representatives in all levels of government.
Since this is not France and not the late 1700s, no one needs to have their head lopped off but they should be fired; they should be sued and have everything of value taken away from them; they should spend the rest of their lives in prison with no special treatment; until they are locked up, they should have their names, their pictures, their family affiliations all openly published. They should be constantly hounded like the dogs that they are; they should be openly and frequently humiliated; they should be scared to have their face seen outside. Time to roll ... let's find out who and where they are and start the job of gettin' 'er done!!
Why is the focus on AIG here? Seems to me they are being singled out as a scapegoats. Not saying they dont deserve this level of wrath or worse, just that ALL corporations that are recieving bailout funds should be scrutinized down to where every last penny is accounted for. What about all the other banks/financial institutions and their execs?
Bailing out any of these failing institutions is outrageous to me. They deserve to go under. All congresspeople on both sides of the aisle should be held accountable for going against their constituents and voting for these bailouts. THAT is where our rage should be directed.
Send your congressperson a tea bag, that should give them an idea of how you feel. While you are at it, send one to the white house too. (this was not my own idea, saw it on another thread and felt I should spread the word.
Taxation without representation is TYRANNY!!!! Sound familiar?
No. Politicians are more concerned with there sponsors than they are us lowly constituents. If you send them a tea bag they will just make a cup of tea out of it then complain that you sent Luzianne instead of Lipton. They are only concerned with constituents, (you know, the little people who put them in office?), during elections. The rest of the time we hardly even exist to them. I think it's time we remind them of who we are. I would like to see as many American voters as possible, and since so many are out of work now that should be quite a few, converge on Washington 'dans la masse' and line the streets by the millions just like the civil rights and gay rights activists have done over the years. Only this time have ALL Americans of all races, nationalities, religions, and walks of life getting as close to the Capital bldg. and the White House as they will allow and shouting in unison, "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take this anymore". Maybe then they will start to understand that we are a people that demands to be listened to.
Poke a little hole in the bag before you send it so that if anyone does use it they'll get dregs in their cup, just like dregs is all we get.
They are just waiting for protesters to round up and send to the FEMA camps.
In ancient Japan, owners who disgraced their companies killed themselves, in the U.S., we give them bonuses...go figure.
HE should resign. He has no idea what he said and as a US Senator?? These guys from both sides of the isle need to stop this bashing. Yes they shouldnt get the bonus money but, do you know exactly what the program was? Was 165m 5% of the max bonus?? They were written over a year ago and are legal contracts. Sorry worker bee's most of you dont understand how senior corp America works. Stop with this war of the haves(educated, motivated) vs the have nots(lazy, un educated)!!!
I have a PhD (highly educated & definitely motivated). Yet I'm a "have not" due to Republican policies (e.g., student loan rates at 9% thanks to Reagan).
Are you saying senior corp America operates by being greedy, selfish jerks with no intelligence or sensitivity to others' needs, and out to screw everyone else? Ah, now I understand you.
Oh, and why should we pay RETENTION bonuses to idiots who messed up not only their own companies, but also the WORLD ECONOMY? Kick 'em out. Don't reward them.
He had every right to say that. These money grabbing corperate executives, all they think about is how to get more money in there pockets. Whyo cares if the bonuses where contracted in a year ago. They failed and if the government(with the tax payers money) wouldnt of bailed them out, they wouldof went tits up...Once they took my money, all bonuses contracts shouldof been voided along with all executives to take a 50 percent decrease in pay til there company shows a profit for atleast 2 years. Now that makes sense, but who am I when I'm just a lowly taxpayer making it on a little better than minimum wage job. Get a life rich folk. And as far as I can see I dont see anybody bailing out small businesses, no one cares about them. They should of let every company make it or fail. That's the way of business and servival. If you survive, you know you have a solid company, that will become stronger and more reliable. And with reliable coorporations, people will invest in them.
Your "have nots" comment is as uneducated as any in this day...have you taken a look at the unemployment rates in this country? Do you not realize that both those fortunate enough to get an education beyond high school and those who are not, are THE have nots these days. Or are you simply implying that only uneducated people are those who are lazy, out of jobs and paying into the stimulus package that is affording $165m in bonus money to a failing business regardless of the contract that were signed? Perhaps you should take the time to think before you type a response that makes you look as uneducated as those whom you bash for being laziness and uneducated!
Educated = hard working ... uneducated = lazy? I have a degree but was never taught how to scam workers, dodge tax laws, rape pension funds, or file false reports on how company stock is actually doing. What this company is doing is criminal. Who is paying for this "bonus system" ... blue collar, uneducated, lazy working men and women. Will we see the benefit of this buyout...no. I feel the entire bail-out should be stopped and all monies paid returned until ceo's show some common sense. One doesn't give out bonuses when the company is floundering.
I agree with your idea on the Senator resigning. The only thing you forgot about, the UAW workers giving back from their Contract. Yes this was a contract.
Amy, I don't think she was implying that "Have nots" are lazy or uneducated. I think her point was that having an education, even a very good one, is not a guarantee of success and that this current mess has hit ALL sectors of society. At least, that's how I read her post.
I share her situation - lots of education, high-interest rate student loan to pay back despite working while I was in grad school - and am greatly underemployed in my present job. I am aware I am lucky to have a job which is almost recession proof, but I still resent the fact that my government did not do more to avert this crisis. SEC failed miserably at their jobs, the congress failed miserably at their jobs, Bush failed miserably at his job, the banks failed miserably at their jobs, yet all those people have not paid the price for the mess they created. It's the rest of us who are paying.
It was pathetic to hear the AIG exec saying that they have to pay bonuses of the "highly talented" people will go elsewhere. These "highly talented" people screwed up the economy and failed at their jobs - where are they going to go with proven track records of being bunglers? His statement reflects the hubris, arrogance, elitism, and entitlement mentality possessed by these bankers, hedge funders, mortgage brokers, who made this mess.
I agree the comments should not have come from a US senator but I believe ALL tax paying Americans agree with the senators intentions. I agree with you that NONE of the AIG exec's should get any bonus's but I differ with you in that I feel if AIG was bailedout of bankruptcy by congress then the employment contracts should have been rewritten with new terms. If congress did not follow through on this, shame on them! This is not a war of the haves vs have nots, its a disgrace to all tax paying Americans who have had their contracts restructured or worse yet had their jobs cut or lost due to the mismanagement and in some cases illegal actions of some corporate executives.
If AIG went bankrupt, the exec's would have received NOTHING; their employment contracts/jobs would have been worthless. Just because congress and America's tax money bailed them out does not mean they should continue with the same disregard for common sense!
I may be a "worker bee" but I know you can't get blood from a stone and you can't get money or bonus's from a bankrupt company!
Hey you dope, if the goverment dosnt bail this company out there is no bonus money anyway, so their contract isnt worth the paper its written on. People like you is the reason why this country in in the mess its in. We need to freeze all bonuses where there is bail out money involved. And when the company get back to where it should be and the bail out money is repaid then the ceos can get what they have earned.
HE should resign.
Why, JD20165? Because an elected official has the guts to accurately express the majority opinion of his constituency? And make no mistake, we normal humans on Planet Earth are beyond disgusted with these totally oblivious a**holes.
most of you dont understand how senior corp America works
If "senior corp America" had been working instead of stealing, we wouldn't be in this mess now!! We 'worker bees' can certainly understand that!
You are a first class dope. People like you is the reason why we have this mess on our hands. If there is no bail out money there is no bonuses you dope. So the contracts are not worth the paper their written on. Hey how about you sending me so money because I'm going through some tough times. And I buy a new car and take a big vacation. You can wire me the money today if you would like. When their is goverment bail out money involved all contracts are void. da!
You must be somebody closely related one of these idotic Executives that you are so ardently defending them and today's greedy Corporate America!
Let me advise you that you are the one uneducated. From my MBA and PhD perspective, the question of if the company had gone out of business would anyone be receiving a bonus is valid. The questions of contracts is only valid because the company is in business. In fact, because the taxpayer now owns 80% of the corporation, there is valid issue over whether such contracts are enforceable, and the new owners have the right to declare such employment contracts null and void.
Respecting AIG's intent to continue operations is not in question. What is in question is the likelihood that several people (both politicians and executives) have known and mislead others in this fiasco.
Rather than scream at the masses, you would do well to research and argue your points logically...but hey, I'm just one of the "uneducated".
Robert,
Sorry. ALL taxpayers do not agree with the Senator's intentions. It is a reprehensible comment that was made to curry favor with voters, not to educate them or help them understand that some things are out of the government's control.
The real problem is all of coprporate America's compensation systems. Just because AIG Financial Products employees protected themselves and their income streams doesn't mean that they were evil or even crooked. The capitalist system is designed to reward individual effort. More and more companies are moving to bonus based systems that allegedly provide pay for performance. The reality is that "performance" is a broad term that is used to suppress the pay of lower rung employees and handsomly reward people who generate revenue, regardless of the means.
When Congress and the administration are brave enough to withstand the accusations of socialism, they can address this systemic problem of overcompensation. Even within the group of AIG FP employees, there were probably only a few that had control over the decisions that created this mess for the parent. That group of people had their salaries reduced to $1 and several lost their jobs and their severance. The rest of them, no matter how highly compensated they are, were just workers, with no control over the macro decision to write these contracts. It is unfair to unwind those contracts and even more unfair to subject them to personal harassment just because the larger system that creates this environment is broken.
For better or worse, redistribution through less income and lower prices is necessary to eliminate these excesses and stimulate the economy. Let companies compete for the best talent based on the quality of the work environment and the creativity they can offer - not based on who pays the most.
Contracts written over a year ago should be null and void when they accepted the bail out. The bailout was NOT intended to pay them for a job badly done.
Worker bees? 90% of us are and it does not mean we are uneducated. The people at AIG are greedy pigs, taking bonuses from the people that bail them out, many are the ones who have lost thier jobs, homes, retirement funds. Wher eis JUSTICE in this mess?
Apparentl the educated and movtivated were not making the money that thier education forcasted and the last time I checked by buisness plan I made money before I got paid or got fired. Maybe someone up the food chain needs to adopt a new corporate motto. Earn your money or get fired. I can
Excuse me! Not all "have nots" are lazy and un-educated. There are many circumstances in the world right now that have put many good hard working people in difficult situations as far as the economy goes. Please do not be so insulting!
well JD20165 not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths or in your case up your ass.If you would like to see one of us lazy uneducated get motivated let me find you.We understand how corp America works us uneducated ones do all the work that brings the money in and you tell each other what a good job your doing off the sweat of us stupid ones.Wee make the money and you waste it and give each other bonuses off our backs. So if you want a bonus let me know and I'll put one on the end of my boot and shove it up your ASS
No kidding on the "Have nots" comment. Is this person insane? If you want to talk about greed, here it is in living color. Why don't you visit a poor village in a third world country and get back to me on whether you are truly a "have not?"
No kidding on the "Have nots" comment. Is this person insane? If you want to talk about greed, here it is in living color. Why don't you visit a poor village in a third world country and get back to me on whether you are truly a "have not?"
From one of the uneducated worker bees, aisle not isle.
that some things are out of the government's control.
Was it not Dodd(D) - CN that added an amendment to legislatively protect these contracts?
That sure appears to be within government control to me. :->
Yikes, you did NOT just call "the have-nots" uneducated and lazy?!!
What planet do you live on? Many Americans are by now in the category of "have-less and maybe in the have'nots already....and most work their tails off and have degrees...
Sometimes, Sir, the dice rolls and there are no winners in the economic fall outs. Most working people had contracts and they were terminated anyway. White collar, blue collar and no collar... No bonuses, no retentions and oh by the way Baby, be careful how you look down on others, cause you never know what financial fates may blow your way.
educated? Politicians are separated by an aisle, not an isle. Working class Americans are not lazy, they're just not entitled.
It's easy to snipe at the people most affected by the recession from atop a high-rise corporate office, but face the facts. No one is waging war against the affluent; people are justifiably bashing the overpaid morons that head the very corporations that brought the economy crashing down from the clouds in the first place.
AIG is not currently profitable, nor have they been for quite some time. That means that those bonus checks were written by taxpayers, not the geniuses who signed the year-old contracts. Until that upper echelon of the tax bracket (probably you included) starts paying a more proportional amount in taxes, there is no justification for them (or you) to defend these bonuses.
Successful capitalism doesn't need to be achieved at the expense of human dignity and common sense.
JD20165, are you one of the aholes thats getting this retainment bonus, or maybe related to someone who is? Or are you just friends? How do 11 of these theives get a retainment bonus after having already left the corperation?
this is picky, but it's driving me NUTS!
ISLE is an island
AISLE it what's between the seats or where the bride walks.
Let's all lighten up a little! Sen. Grassley was out of line, but I doubt he was serious.
I'll be waiting in the aisle of the church on the isle.
I, too, am one of the highly educated, out-of-work people someone who is obviously poorly educated, made the snide comment about. I haven't been able to find a job in over a year after having health issues which led to my being cut loose. I even applied for unskilled labor positions, but no one would hire me because of my educational background. I was considered "overqualified". That term is the stupidest one I've ever heard. Yet, here I sit, forced to take unemployment and possibly disability due to my health. I WANT to work and am certainly QUALIFIED to work. And my background is in healthcare, so I should be a desirable employee. But I can't get hired for anything. My husband's military retirement pays his child support and he has a skilled labor position that pays the mortgage for now, but his hours are being cut as well. We've declared bankruptcy and lost our vehicle and all the land and house I owned prior to our marriage. A treat for us now is to be able to go to the local Chinese buffet for supper once or twice a month. Otherwise, we're eating a lot of poptarts, ramen, rice and eggs. But at least we have health insurance and one car that is paid for. We're luckier than most. However, to see these corporate heads whining about their misfortunes is simply repulsive. Let them, live paycheck to paycheck, praying they'll have a job the next day and that they can make this month's mortgage payment. I have absolutely no sympathy for their pathetic little whining. I've always believed people should get what they work for, but these people are getting far more than they've ever worked for. If they were all wiped out in a massive plague, I'd be hard pressed to care. They don't deserve any bailouts. Let them put their own money into the companies so then they'll have a reason to take better care of their corporate responsibilites.
the senator was obviously not serious!! the term political correctness is an oxymoron! anything political cannot be correct...
AIG can spend the money they make any way they want to. But now that they are using my money, albeit a small amount, their executives need to lose their arrogant, "I'm better than everyone" attitude and realize that they are in another world now, where destruction of companies is not seen as a great asset. Why reward utter failure?
The Senator's comments were not appropriate for a Republican to make. However if a Democrat had said those things we would have never known.
Oh grow up! It's the two party system that isn't working right now. It should be all about getting this country back to some degree of normalcy, not he said this and they said that. We're supposed to be adults! This party bickering has to stop!
Robert, you can't stand the fact that the Democrats are rejuvenated. After years of being depressed, abused, and brow-beaten, Democrats are alive and well. Why? Because Republicans took their opportunity to lead this country to badly abuse their political power. Now our positions have been reversed, and you cry like a baby: “Why is everybody picking on me!” Take the President’s advice: pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get to work. Your credibility will return over time, but, just like AIG, you’re going to have to earn it. If you think about it, the Republican Party and AIG have a great deal in common. Which is worse, using millions in tax money for bonuses or the Republicans’ recent abuses and wanting the President of the United States to fail. AIG officials and Republicans accepting responsibility and apologizing or committing suicide – a thought that makes me smile.
Robert - If you forget your /sarcasm tag people will assume that you are serious. For future reference, you may want to add that in there. ;)
My comment is very simple. If the job you have done has caused a major company down then a bonus is not in your future. When I was working our bonuses depended on performance of objectives met. If results were bad no bonus. Why is that so difficult for people to understand? It is appalling to suggest that that much money in bonuses is appropriate knowing the state of the company.
No, not at all. This is an "in your face" response to an "in your face" act of pure greed.
How else is a responsible person supposed to react to the actions of AIG employees, who have obviously shown an utter blatant disregard for anyone else but themselves.
>> To the 400 employees and execs of AIG: time is wasting - redeem yourselves NOW before it's too late.
I couldn't agree more.
I am normally a pretty middle of the road kind of guy ... easy going, dont get wound up.
But this AIG thing has my blood boiling over.
I am incredibly angry by it all.
If a couple of AIG executives "committed suicide" over this act of complete apalling greed it would NOT phase me one bit.
No more bailouts!
No more bailouts!
No more bailouts!
No more bailouts!
No more bailouts!
Actually if the execs followed the senator's suggestion, one could consider those acts as a stimulus program for the mortuary industry so it would be a win-win situation for all.
Luminator, that's the funniest thing I've heard today ... thanks for the smile! :)
Hmm. That's a thought. I wander if trickle down economics would come into play here?
The taxpayers gave AIG $170 billion - they used $165 billion for bonuses. What is wrong with this picture? The Senate just assumed that AIG would use the money to stay in business. Apparantly, that was a wrong assumption. They had money to stay in business, they just didn't have money to pay bonuses for a job poorly done. We need a law or regulation that specifically states what the the money can be used for - you know - treat companies like the 4 year olds they are acting like.
Correction 170 Billion in aid and 165 MILLION in bonuses. Less than 1 percent of the aid provided ended up in bonuses. BUt I agree it was wrong in the first place.
Correction 170 Billion in aid and 165 million in bonuses is less than 1 tenth of one percent. Still too much.
Rushing through the bail out without checking into the problems that goverment involvement produces in these situations was the first mistake. It should not have come to this point to find out that these bonuses were going to be paid. I would like to see the press start examining all the money that these hypocrites in Washington are spending with their trips and vacations!!!! What about the Billions spent on things that will never stimulate the economy!!!
I'm fully aware of the argument that the government rushed through the bail out and I agree, to an extent, that that may have been the case.
However, if they had taken their time and bickered (we know they would) about every possible problem that might be encountered, then we would have received financial help from the government in about 2020. And, in the mean time, there would have been constant complaining from the public and politicians about how help isn't coming fast enough and how it is everyone else's fault.
i am sure it was said out of anger. when is the GIVE GIVE GIVE SPEND SPEND SPEND going to STOP.
I don't feel the statement was made out of anger, but more out of the respect and responsibility AIG should project after the tax payers bail them out for their greed. That old custom of suicide was an old custom, if they disrespected their people, they took their lives. Being an old custom, the new custom should be they all resign. We aren't getting bonuses or raises now for doing our jobs well, IF we even have a job. They should do the honorable thing and resign.
Look what Obama stepped in to. The market collapses are not his doing, he is doing his best to fix when damage has been done in congress and on wall street for many years. Give him time and support. He was just as angry as we are.
Here's hoping that the old adage "what goes around comes around" hits these execs. Let them live on my budget since losing my job and see how the manage since their life savings has been lost due to mismanagement on their part and on Wall Street's part.
As a native Iowan, I demand that the senator apologize to the people of Iowa for grossly inappropriate comments.
Hey Bartman, also as a fellow Iowan the Senators remarks are appropriate They AIG, stole your money!!! Come back to the center bud you are too far left...
Bartman, empty out your bank account and send the money to the execs at AIG. You sir do not have both oars in the water!
Hey biggpapa, I'm on the left and I agree with you. Crazy huh?
I guess hatred doesn't always have to divide us after all.
Im not a Iowan but I agree with you Bartman-372555
That was totally inappropriate and not a worthy comment from any Senator of our Country...
whats next??
Encouraging people to go kill these guys. if they wont do it themselves?? !!!!!
and to this comment
"I guess hatred doesn't always have to divide us after all."
I quess you think its better that "Hatred" is what can pull you together??!!!
Geezeeee, now thatttttt is something to teach your children!!
What if one of these people decides to jump off a bridge and it just happens to be right onto the hood of your car while your children are in it??
Watch what you wish for.. you may just get it!
People , Good comes out of bad!
You have to deal with the hand that is dealt you in life..
Im stressing just like everyone else.. watching my elderly father worry over his entire familys circumstances..worrying everyday that my hubby will keep his job..
My husband was laid off for a year and 1/2 after we were attacked on 9/11 and we almost lost everything..it was a horrible time...
but after stressing and working what it seemed 24/7 to try to make ends meet...
I came to the conclusion that it is all just stuff..
if your house was on fire.. who or what would you be saving if there was only time to save a couple of things.?
It would be the people you love.!! not your stuff!
So instead of wishing for the ruin of another human being... count your blessings!
Hug those you love.!!! Be thankful you have a family!
.. you could have alllllll of the money in the world and be told your wife or husband was going to die of a disease and there was nothing they could do..
Youd give everything you have to keep them with you... believe me.. we almost lost our son when he was 17 to a horrendous car accident...
Lets not let hatred ,along with the greed that has gotten our country to this point, lead us!
Blessed Be America! We will come our of this and be stronger for it!
I'm a native Iowan and my first thought when I read Sen Grassley's statement was "GO CHUCK!" I'm a democrat and yet I have nothing but respect for Chuck Grassley.
Josh, I, too, am an Iowan and I would completely would agree with you. Gotta love Chuck Grassley! :-)
What ever happened to the first ammendment , Freedom of Speech should not require an appology
Maybe it IS time for some REAL bloodletting, afterall, Jefferson said the tree of liberty needs to be regularly watered with the blood of tyrants and despots, no matter how petty. Maybe shooting a few hundred stock brockers, commodities traders, investment bankers and rich criminals in general would get the point thru their pointy heads that their criminal sociopathic behavior will no longer be tolerated. Even Forbes magazine recognizes the basic criminality of the wealthy, afterall, number three on their wealthiest persons list is the biggest drug kingpin in Mexico.
I don't understand how anyone could be so stupid!
CEO's who take a bonus when they owe the American people
should go to jail. That is gross mismanagement and a slap in the face to the rest of us.
What I don't understand is how could they in good conscience (I guess they don't have a good one though now do they) take that bonus. If I worked there and they said to me "Hey, we got some bailout money and from that we are going to give you your bonus" I would have said HELL NO. People are just greedy and selfish. Regardless of if it's in your contract or not...sometimes you just have to do the right thing. The execs should have said no to the bonuses.
Is Senator Grassley and the rest of Congress going to also resign for their part in creating this mess?
No - no one in congress who had anything to with this is going to stand up and take responsbility. The same can be said for all of those with spiffy new jobs in Obamas Administration - they wont either.
That is what makes a politician - a "politician."
Number one and two on that list - Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank!
Simply disgusting.
While AIG contracted to provide the bonuses, it is up to each individual to accept or return them. Let's reserve opinions until the outcome is known.
How about 'Tar and Feather"these guys. Run them out on a rail.
At least give these guys some kind of monetary spanking.
Then have them checked for competency
Fat the rich!!
SHAMELESS....Why should we (taxpayer) bail them out, and then have to sit back and watch them take these bonuses? Where's my damn bail out? Is the government going to compensate me for my poor decissions, poor performance, and shameless greed??? Hey AIG we didn't take you to raise. Earn your own way, and stand up and take responsibility for your perfomance failures. We need to see some of these corporations take their lumps and fold if that's what they've got themselves into. I don't want to help any of them out. I live well within my honest means, and they need to do the same. The free ride needs to end.
Unfortunately, the majority of the bonus monies is going to the derivities folks that are the cause of AIG's massive losses. They bankrupted the company in essence and are being rewarded based on some inane contract clause. They should be paying AIG for their massive stupidity instead of receiving taxpayer monies. Unforturnately, most of the our dollars are going to overseas banks not staying here at home. AIG, GM, and Chysler should have been allowed to go into bankruptcy then these bonuses would be a non-issue. God can congress piss our children's money and future away! Obama and his cronies are one termers for sure, but afraid the horse is out of the gate and it will take years and years to undo the damage. The thinkers will out number the "feelers" next election. Maybe it is a good thing for America to see what the government looks like with the "feelers" in charge? GOD SAVE AMERICA!
Actually...Bush gave them this bailout money BEFORE he left office...so quit trying to put everything on Obama. They (I mean ALL REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS) should have added the stipulation that bonuses cannot be paid out of the bailout money. This second round of bailout money to them ought to definitely include this stipulation.
If you'll do your homework you'll find that both Bush and Obama (members of the same little "power click"by the way) have both authorized giving money to AIG.
comment entirely appropriate......what is not appropriate is the awkward backing down from it, AND the phrasing of the "yes"selection here, which hints at killing the execs, certainly too far, although lives have, and will continue to be lost over this mess just as sure as murder by bullet.....blame is fast becoming as passe' as the actions of these priveleged few, however, both part of a limited view.......what is rising is a broader, more compassionate intelligence that will allow us to move forward as a society instead of wallowing in these messes using the same flawed toolset that creates them........do the next constructive thing, then the next......
How can Congress have any right to complain about bonuses when they give themselves a 10% increase in pay. If I am not mistaken, the original reason for bonuses was because Congress wanted to try and control salaries. These bonuses were established as part of a contract almost two years ago.
And ask Nancy Pelosi about that one!
She wont allow it to come up for vote!
Isnt she special!?!?!?!
"These bonuses were established as part of a contract almost two years ago."
If I'm not mistaken the average Congressman's salary is only $175,000 a year, a very far cry from millions in salary PLUS millions in bonuses. They have to support two separate residences, one in their home state & county/parrish and one in Washington when they're working, so their salary really has to stretch. However, they COULD limit their pay raises to 2-3% like the majority of WORKING Americans receive, that is if they get one this year!! Now, enough about Congress and on to your above statement.....
Do the math, please.....executive bonus stipulated in a contract is generally tied to company performance. If these bozos were around nearly two years ago to sign these golden contracts, they contributed to AIG's meltdown.....therefore, they are NOT entitled to, nor do they deserve a BONUS of any kind. They don't even deserve the salaries they were paid and should be FIRED IMMEDIATELY !!!!!
Limit raises to 2-3%??? Are you crazy? They should not even get bonuses until WE are paid back. Are YOU getting pay increases? Many of US aren't IF we even have a job now.
Bonuses and raises should be blocked until WE are paid back and they PROVE they can do their job properly.
CiCi was refering to congresses 10% yearly cost of living automated raise
Is only 175 thousand!!! Ahh to live on an "only". MY BAD

Congress rushed the bill through. AIG is meeting its contractual obligations. Who is really at fault??????
