I was extremely puzzled as a child about the term "unwed mothers" since I also believed that you had to be married to have a baby!

I thought the only time you could get pregnant was during your period - glad I never found out the hard way that was wrong!

As a 3 year old I believed that older men's urine made women pregnant based on mother's explanation.

When I was an 11 year old boy, already having erections but not yet having ejaculations, I concluded that some involvement between the men's and women's "private parts" was what caused women to become pregnant. The manner I imagined was that the boy/man's penis was involved by urinating on the girl/woman's breasts to become pregnant.

I use to think that a woman became pregnant just by the mere fact that she was married. I had no concept that physical intimacy was involved.

In the first grade, a particularly enlightened classmate told all of us at lunch time what a "whore" was: A man who loved another man and they danced and kissed each other. The teacher who finally told us to knock it off must have been quite puzzled as to why a bunch of pre-pubescent boys were running around the playground calling each other "whores."

When I was little, my mother told me that getting pregnant was caused by a woman getting married.  Of course, this is also a woman who to this day believes it is unhealthy to shower when a woman has her period and that if you go swimming or take a bath it will make your period stop.  Conversely, if you drink red wine during that time of the month it will make it last longer (See the "logic" - red liquid in, ...."  I was an active kid who liked to run around outdoors and go horseback riding, and we used to argue every month because she wanted me to just lie flat on my back on the couch for the whole course of my period so I wouldn't hurt myself.  She also told me weightlifting would make my "uterus drop."  Where to, I don't know, exactly.  Oh, yes, she knew everything about the female body - probably why she smoked when she was pregnant with me and advises me that one must never go to a gynecologist and have them "poke around there."

I had always thought that 1 yr after you got married, you had a baby. You didn't need to have sex. You just had to be married. I always thought sex would hurt so I couldn't understand why the "bad girls" had sex B4 they were married. I had thought they should just get married & then they wouldn't get 'hurt' having sex becuz after marriage, there's no need to have it! Babies just come naturally!

Oh, the things kids think up!

When my baby sister was born my mother explained things in such a way that I beleived that the urine of a man, but not a boy, could make a woman pregnant. I examined urine quite intently trying to see the difference between that which came out of a man versus that which came out of boys. Also I wanted to see how it was different from women's urine. It all looked yellow to me and I couldn't see any difference. Of course some years later I learned that urine wasn't the secret ingrediant after all.

During my first (and failed) sexual encounter with a boy, in frustration, he said to me, "Do you want to be a virgin forever?" As I had only heard that term in connection with "virgin forests" (a term I was obviously unclear on, too), I had no idea why he was suddenly discussing trees.

while in elementary school, I knew what the "secret ingredient" was provided by the man but I thought it was like an on/off switch. Put it "in" turn the switch on, the flow began, turn the switch off and pull it "out" - delivery made!

As a young boy, maybe 11 or 12, I always thought that sex was "dirty". Therefore you would NEVER want to have sex with a girl that you loved. You would only have sex with girls you didn't care about. I would never fantasize about having sex with a girl I had a crush on, in fact just the opposite. I would daydream about NOT having sex with my girlfriend because I wanted to keep her pure and unsullied.

It is a ridiculous but not entirely surprising omission for the article not to mention the biggest Victorian-era sex related myth which unfortunately still pervades to this day, that of the necessity for male genital mutilation (aka circumcision).

My mother and I never had "The Talk." I was raised in a fairly strict religious environment, and we never said a word about sex. I found out about the mechanics thereof from romance novels. I can't say that I ever really had any misconceptions...oh, wait. I used to think that masturbation was a sin, and that I was a terrible sinner who needed to repent and change her evil ways.

I had the opposite situation. My parents never had the talk with me either, except they were always behind closed doors getting it on... ironic that they didn't want to talk to me about sex, but it was okay that I could hear their exploits through the walls.

I used to think that babies came from trees, then my mother explained to me that "no they don't mommy and daddy sleep together and then a baby is made" So I was always afraid to have a nightmare and ask to climb into bed with mom and dad for fear of sleeping with my dad would make me pregnant. Also I hope that having an orgasm doesn't cause pregnancy, because i'd rather orgasm and go with out the nine months and ending pain and aggrevation. lol

Having an orgasm doesn't make you become pregnant however it increases your odds of becoming pregnant (if all other conditions are met, that is). Because the contractions that happen during orgasm cause sperm to be projected further into the body.

I cant say I remember having any misconceptions about sex or childbearing. I took from my Mom's bookshelf and read at about the age of five or six "All About Childbirth" as I do not remember much of anuthing before that age it would be safe to sayu that I had no misconceptions on where exactly babies came from for as long as I can remember. The only thing I stayed a bit fuzzy on was exactly what a penis was/looked like. I didnt really find out till I was about nineteen. (I'm still ninteen.) But I diod know that something other than urine came out of the penis and combined with the Mother's egg to make a baby.
