Why don't we just have a blanket apology to cover everybody and everyone and then go from there?

Yes, just as soon as China apologizes for the Boxer Rebellion and the communist takeover in 1949, since both adversely impacted Westerners.

Why should the government apologize for something that happened over 100 years ago? The same with slavery. I wasn't there, you weren't there, and no one today was there. This country is getting so sensitive to there own needs that they forget what's important; ie health care, abortion, THE economy. If you want to be noticed, Why don't you put your energy into fixing something important than trying to get your name in the paper.

Yeah, BE the victim, that'll work...  You can have your apology when my Irish ancestors, who built NY bridges, dug subways, canals, etc., get theirs.

Get on with Life and leave the past to historians, not armchair sociologists with a craven need to kvetch.

Wow, I am both floored by the level of ignorance inherent many viewpoints expressed here, and the refusal to see parallels that are extant today. Within the scope and context of United States bred racism and its intra-cultural equivalent of nativism--that many times preceded and fostered such hate--the Chinese were the first historical people to be designated and excluded as a group from U.S. soil; solely on the basis of race and ethnicity. And by the way, it is not being politically correct to explicate wrongs of the past that need righting, but it defines the essence of citizenship that permits such open and transparent criticism.

"Wrongs that need righting" is key here. Why do you think that this "needs righting?" Humans have done horrible things to humans since time began. If you want to start apologizing for all of it, please do. You will never stop. Me, I don't owe anyone an apology for something done by my ancestors, and you don't owe me one for whatever your ancestors did to any Jews, American Indians, blacks, Hispanics, or Asians, all of whom are in my blood lines.

No one ever says let's forget about the Holocaust and we shouldn't. It was a horrible era in human history. So was slavery and the Jim Crow laws that were create and upheld by the federal and state governments for many, many, many, years during and after slavery's end. We remember history because we need to learn from it. And we learn from it so we can never repeat those wrongs. And despite these horrific laws and laws similar to them, the Chinese Americans, Native Americans and African Americans in this country, (contrary to popular belief and/or opinion) have made significant contributions to this country. It's easy to dismiss this and say, that was how things were during that time. Or that we shouldn't pay for our father's sins. Well, if you are a christian and a believer of Christ, you know that he paid the ultimate price for the sins of all of humanity and that includes you.

White ethnic groups were not enslaved, relegated to ghettos (Chinatowns), had laws passed against them against interracial marriage, or anything else. White on white bias was a "family affair" between white groups. The hatred whites display toward all non-whites is a much more deep-seated thing. You are so incredibly ignorant. I really hope you don't vote.

Half are not even true Chinese anymore , they are Americans not Chino Americans, Afro Americans,Jewish Americans,Latin AMericans,Czech Americans,Irish Americans, Euro Americans... just as the Indians, true owners of this land we pushed off and forgot are now FELLOW Americans. Thats the problem in Washington and this country. If we could move on and worry about the future instead of worrying about something we can NOT change we might be a better society all the way around. It is people like these that promulgate rascism. Lets keep talking about what happened to my poor great great great grandparents ( which I can actually make claim to) so we can keep remembering why we want to remain different from each other. Of course there should be an apology. Asians are the one racial group about which people know next to nothing, and the hostility displayed toward them never is discussed. White people never cease to surprise me with their ignorance and racial hostility toward everyone else.

They were white ..what a stupid word...Anglos from all over the European continent who had to enslave themselves to landowners here to make a life. Get over it and do something productive to show everyone you actually can overcome your shortcomings.

                                              I agree with rcr98144's comment:

White ethnic groups were not enslaved, relegated to ghettos (Chinatowns), had laws passed against them against interracial marriage, or anything else. I'm afriad that there seems to be many white people who either don't understand this, or refuse to understand this. The difference between the ancestors of many whites, those who may have been mistreated, and those of African-Americans, Asian American, Native Americans, is that those of whites were simply able to blend into the larger population. Despite the fact that you're ancestors may have come here poor, uneducated, only carrying a passion to work hard to make a better life for themselves and their families, they had MORE of an opportunity to obtain that American dream simply because of the color of thier skin. How many stories are their of the poor imigrant European, coming to this country and making a fortune, obtaining the American dream, due to his diligence and hard work are there? To many to count... How many of these stories are there among America's minority groups that I've previously mentioned. They exist, but are far fewer. How many scientists, doctors, senators, governors, presidents, could there have been if these groups didn't have to deal with the the plite of government sanctioned, socially accepted, skin color racism, something that the ancestors of whites never had to contend with? For one moment, reflect on that.

Wow. Talk about racism. Do ya really think they "blended in" when they hopped of the Mayflower? LOL. They picked up shovels and built America. Luckily, they were able to bring in some help from Africa, Asia, Ireland, etc. Now the progeny of those folks can pursue their dreams, just as the so-called 'whites' can do. I wish the Africans/Asians would have gotten here first then I wouldn't have to listen to this drivel. They should all be proud. But instead, all the kids want to do is whine, and of course file a lawsuit. All we ever hear from the non-"whites" is how rotten the U.S. is--it's really getting old and worn out folks. Now shut up and help build our great country up rather than continuoulsly tear it down. I owe no-one an apology and I don't want one from anyone else. I just want my freedom.

oh, so whites need to apologize because they "had more opportunity." Hmmm... Missed that one. Is that why people from minorities get jobs and scholarships they're not qualified for? To even up the "oppurtunity?" That argument really sucks.

No whites need to apologize because it's the right thing to do. Affirmative Action is not about getting something just because you're non-white. Read your history, the history of this country. Non-whites have been systematically targeted simply because the color of their skin. They had more opportunity because they were white. Do you honestly believe that if a black person time travelled back to 1930's and walked into the halls of a university like Harvard, or Yale, that they would be accepted, or that they would even be able to get a job in "white" america. That answer should be obvious to you and I. Doors were closed to non-whites simply because they weren't white. My point is that an Irish man who came to this country poor with absolutely nothing still had a chance, simply because he was white. Simply because he could slip unnoticed (compared to that of a non-white) into the larger population, work hard, build his wealth, and live the American dream. The door of opportunity was closed to non-whites, only leaving them to make whatever life they could in there own disadvantage communities. The effects of that disparity can still be felt even today. What would the state of the white community be today if they had gone through what non-white have experienced? There's power in an apology. It's not a sign of weakness, which is what I see many feel this will be. Non-whites see this country as a beacon, as a symbol of the things that they can achieve. That's why there have been those who have gone off and fought and died in this country's wars despite their treatment. ...And have pushed and pushed and pushed this country to live up to it's promises that this is the land of the freedom for all. If you're hatred and disgust for those who are not the same color as you blinds you from opening a book and your mind to other aspects of this countries history, understanding the stories and experiences of those who were systematically oppressed generation and generation, then I can only pray for you. I'm not saying that you have to agree with everything that I say; however, all that I ask is to understand, and part of understanding is to begin educating yourself.

I just want my freedom.

....Are you serious? I wouldn't call the enslavement and death of millions upon millons of African people a little help. I'm not one to insult anyone, but , you are complete moron.

sw-1163333, I was born in 1950. I saw racism, and I saw the changes that occurred thanks to people like MLK and LBJ. I have relatives that cover just about every ethnicity in the generation that follows mine. I am also well educated, so need not be admonished to "educate yourself." Regardless, I do not believe that I, or anyone else, owes an apology to any other human being for something that happened to their ancestors. You are not the arbitor of "the right thing." That's God's business. Yours should be to try being as decent a human being as you can, and not to be an apologetic door mat.
