Would you drink coffee made from animal poo?

Kopi Luwak, or civet coffee, is one of the most expensive brews in the world – 2 pounds of the stuff sells for as much as $700 in Europe. But the way it’s made may give you pause: Coffee beans are fed to a civet – a critter that looks like a cat on steroids – then are separated from its droppings. Would you drink civet coffee? Discuss and share your thoughts with other readers.

Well, maybe I’d smell it, at least. But $700 for two pounds is even more expensive than Starbucks!

I wonder who the first person to try poo coffee was. They must've had a serious caffeine habit and been in a real bind!

As always, MSNBC gets the headline and the opinion question wrong. The coffee is not made from Civet dung but from coffee beans. Why not?

I would probably try it if I didn't have to pay that much. I like coffee, but no coffee is worth $700/2pounds!

Sure, I'll try it..but why is this news? The same info has been reported for the past 5 years at least.

Over one's life, there is much "poo" one must "eat". But to wash it down with the actual remnants of some other animal's production is uncomprehensible. Thanks, but I'll pass on this one....

In reality, there's probably not much more poo in the coffee than is already in our daily diet. Processed foods are choked full of various animals and insects poo.

Yes, I've had some. Guess what? It tastes like s***. It doesn't even begin to compare to Hawaiian Kona or Jamaican Blue Mountain.

I've heard that Jamican Blue Mountain is the best around! I would love to try that, but not poo coffee...that's just gross.

So, Bob, I'm guessing you are one of those people that visits other places or countries and never tries anything but meat and potatoes. People have been drinking this for years and no one has ever died from it. I, for one, am eager to travel and try things that I can't get here. That is how we learn about other cultures. Besides, research what you are eating in this country sometimes. There is a standard of how many bug parts are allowed in certain foods, such as peanut butter or chocolate. You eat worse things than this every day.

P.S. - I love how this is a liberal conspiracy.

People are afraid of coffee beans that have been through the digestive tract of an animal, but those same people will gladly eat aborted avian embryos, thin slices of fried porcine stomach, and browned pieces of bread infused with dead fungus. Sure, I've just described eggs, bacon, and toast, but my point is that if we truly think about where all our food comes from, then trying a little poo coffee isn't that big a deal.

well, even though you made a good point, eggs are not "aborted avian embryos", they are never fertilized. Therefore they were never embryos. Athough they do come out of a chicken's butt. And yeast is not "dead fungus" it's a living organisim that is found in most breads and pastries. And I don't believe it's considered a fungus, however, I could be wrong. And I'm not sure bacon comes from a pigs stomach because of the fat content. I'm sure it comes from another part of the body. The stomach wouldn't be infused with muscle and fat. But again, I could be wrong.

But, as I said, you make a good point. But I still wouldn't want to drink coffee from predigested beans. Just my take on it.

that's not entirely true...most treatment plants diverge the treated water back into lakes, oceans, or rivers. Where nature would further process it. Most treatment plants now have the processes to take raw sewage and process it cleaner than most drinking water, BEFORE it is released back into water systems. But as a point, you could be right.

Many Asian, African and European countries that are just as civilized as us still have daily markets where local food is cooked and eaten right on the street. This is where you can find some of the best food, if you know what to look for.
